They are BOTH. That's what makes them so appealing. :D

Granted I've only opened one- a MOC G2 Magic Starswirl. But I want more MOC G2's to open. It's a dirty dirty sin and I love it D:

.....

-laughs- wow, a whopping 6 members of OPEN.

I would never open a MIP G1, G3's dont bother me, loads of them.

I agree that yes indeed they are collectables, most of you wouldnt write in marker all over your ponies - because they are yours - so why deface the packaging ;)

Good point ;) Gives people something to think about =P

::has images of grabbing ice cristal and giving him a permanent marker beard to make him more manly::

I think my major beef with opening a MOC G1 is that as far as I know, they weren't really collected during the 80s like they are now, so the vast majority of them were opened. G2s and G3s on the other hand are collected and kept MIB/MOC by collectors and therefore in 20 years there will still be plenty of G2s and G3s MIB/MOC. I love having my G1s MOC b/c the cards are so pretty and its like owning a little piece of pony history.

I have a few mocs but I will not open them. I was way too tempted to open my MIB flurry but I sold it so I wouldn't open her up.

Because I don't care about the packaging. And if I were to write in marker all over them, again, that would be devaluing my property. Why would anyone else care? Just because some people think that opening them is destructive doesn't mean *everyone* does. You say potato, etc. Live and let live.

....

Just because you don't care about the packaging doesnt mean no one else does? I know they are 'yours' as everyone who opens them uses as their main argument. But why not give a moc collector the joy of keeping them that way, and you having the thrill of the search for a perfect loose pony. You could be opening the very last on left on its packaging and destroying a tiny little piece of the history of toys and collectables...it just makes me sad.

Writing over a pony, on purpose, then posting it here, espicially if it was sought after and minty, would probably get you flamed, I know it isn't the same thing, but I wish people would stop getting so offended about it and just see the other side of the story. Yes I understand how satisfying it is to defy keeping something more collectable and enjoying being the first to open it and touch and comb the hair, but my opinion just differs. You won't be around forever and it wont always be your property unless you take your ponies to the grave -chuckles- I know some people are doing that, in that case go ahead, hehe.

GroovyGusty...don't even think about it! heheheh

My ponies are going to be sealed in an air and water tight vault and sent to the grave with me.. as is my Supra. 8) Mine, mine, and nobody else's!

If I ever needed the money I'd shuck them off to someone who I knew wouldn't open them. It would drive me crazy if I knew I sold my MIB Princess Tiffany and then saw pictures of her opened. Which brings us back to the amount of money spent on any given MIB/MOC to open it.

The MIPs I can understand. Bags, bleh. I'm selling them because, not that I'll open them, but they'll never display right. I enjoy hunting for mint loose ponies that were bagged.

ive opened.,...

I've opened a few ponies and not felt guilty about it. I sold most of the rest of my MIB and was glad they went to people who would appreciate mib more than I would.

I think people should do whatever they want with their ponies/collectables to make themselves happy. Isn't that the whole point of collecting?

It's selfish for people who open to say "I'm going to take this irreplacable MOC off the market and open it for my pleasure!" and it's just as selfish for MOC collectors to say "They won't always be yours, so you can't do what you want with your property." I really wish neither side would try to use the moralistic argument, because that makes the person saying it a hypocrite no matter what side they are on. I can see both sides in this, and I think neither is 100% right. The only thing that really bothers me is one side's opinion has a lot more effect over the other side's personal choices. I don't see many non-MOC people telling MOC people that it's wrong of them to keep their ponies on the card. I think people should do what they want to make themselves happy. If it makes you happy to buy a MOC and keep it minty and displayed, more power to you. If you want to spend all that extra money for the sheer pleasure of taking a pony out of her packaging, then great. Whatever makes you happy. You don't usually have a collection like this for others, you do it because it makes you happy. Why attatch all these stigmas and strings?

Yes, it does make me cringe a little bit to see customized rares, rares with chopped up hair and repaints and things, but on the same page if it makes them happy then go nuts. I will make a differnce by choosing not to do such things myself, not lording over people telling them what is right or wrong.

Not so much anymore, but when I started collecting you couldn't go to a message board without tripping over a bunch of people saying how wrong it was to have MOCs because "the ponies are trapped" and "it's cruel" and "they can't breeeeathe!" Some of them were just joking. :) And some of them were completely serious.

opening mib/moc..

HAhaha, yeah,, I've done it--but not to ponies. I had a HUGE Jem collection. It included a few MIB dolls. I busted out a couple of them and the outfits. It was a groovy feeling, being THE only person to touch the doll/etc since it left the factory like 25 yrs ago. Ya know?? I paid for them, why not? Its still better than the alternative--the sad dolls that ended up in a trash dump...like most toys sad sad ending. I had about 5 or 6 MIB/MOC ponies.. I opted for selling them. They retained their value nicley and I got a little time to enjoy them as well. I say, I think its best to keep them on card or in box--only because the numbers are dwindling. But...if you choose to free them, its okay, cus you most likely paid or traded for them and they ARE YOURS!! Right?? So ahh well...have fun!

People will never agree on this. As I said, I opened the Movie Firefly so I could watch the movie, but that's the only one. And like others have said, when I realized I didn't enjoy my MOC ponies as much as my loose ones, I sold them because I knew others would want them that way. And I can totally see that they are serious collectables in limited numbers, and it's a loss for the community when they get opened. But I still think that people should do what makes them happy. I buy ponies because I like them, not because they became collectable. If I spend $75 on Ice Crystal, I did it because I wanted him that much, even though my DH looks at him next to $10 Slugger and doesn't get the difference. It's something I do for me, and me only. I know I will die someday, but that is hopefully quite a long time from now. And you know what? Some of my ponies have rust, cancer, and plastic that's already feels like it's melting. They're not going to last forever either. I sure do hope that my children will inherit my pony collection one day, but I'm not concerned with what they will be worth at that time. If I was concerned with that, I'd be putting money in an account for them instead of buying ponies to begin with. I'm not going to last forever, and neither are my wonderful ponies, so I'm just going to enjoy them while I can.

I'm with you there, Mandi. I don't think there's a 100% "right" or "wrong" answer on this. Do what you want with your stuff, and I'll do what I want with mine. I don't say anything about it unless someone brings it up for discussion.

But why not give a moc collector the joy of keeping them that way, and you having the thrill of the search for a perfect loose pony

Because that's how the free market is run. If someone is willing to pay more than me, they'll get the item and can do what they wish with it. If I'm willing to pay more for it, whether I open it, leave it, or give it to a dog to play with, why should it matter to someone else?

Not to mention, maybe I don't want "the thrill of the search." There are some ponies I've searched for for a long time, and if the next one I happen to see is MOC, I should pass it over because someone else may want to keep it MOC? Then they can outbid me.

.

I don't know if anyone's argued this point of view yet or not. If you are concerned about the worldwide, overall existance of MOC ponies, and especially if you are concerned about market value, then look at it this way: If someone opens a MOC, that makes YOUR MOC collection all the more valuable. Perhaps they've done you a favor. ;)

As I posted earlier, I have openned a number of MOCs in the past, and enjoy them all the more now that they are openned. But I like to have my cake and eat it too: I openned the ponies in such a way that the card is mostly still attatched, and sometimes I package them back up and pretend they are still sealed MOCs. ::grins::

Collecting is all about personal enjoyment. Although, over the years, I've notcied that for a lot of people, collecting is about social status (which is one reason why some - ONLY SOME! - folks look for only rare ponies, and why some people sell their collection when they get angry with the online community). Perhaps that plays a hand in this debate; perhaps not?

I try to take the view that once an item is off the market and permanently in the hands of a collector, that item no longer exists. Scrutinizing what other people do with their propery, to me, means you appreciate your own property just a bit less.

I have opened many MOCs. Some of them sell for more loose nowadays than what I paid for them MOC. When I first got online in '97, and started buying MOCs, it didn't occur to me to leave them in the package (unless I later intended to sell or trade them). I opened up like 6 MOC Dutch ponies (that I paid $12-$25 each for--the seller said she had like 10+ of each Dutch pony MOC) Later on, I kept a few select ponies in the package since I like seeing how they looked brand new.

I disagree with opening the pony being like writing in marker all over the pony. Many ponies left on card are getting damaged by the card, from being trapped in a bubble for so long, etc. & you can't even see it. Some will have marks from the card, some colors of hair can bleed into the plastic from being pressed down against it so long, they will develop a sticky residue, etc. If a collector opens a pony and keeps it in mint, right out of the package condition, somewhere down the line, whoever gets the pony will enjoy it just as much as a MOC collector enjoys a MOC.

As for "why not give a MOC collector the joy of keeping them MOC", you can just as easily say "why not give someone the joy of opening their MOC". I think people should do what makes them happy regarding MOCs.

....

"If someone opens a MOC, that makes YOUR MOC collection all the more valuable"

But what if they just opened the last one of that particular pony Spoosh?

And it matters to the MOC collectors because they might have had a chance of keeping it that way, MOC's cant be replaced. Loose are already loose.

I totally agree with Glorfindel's latest post....I'm sure there are very rare MOC's out there, that MOC collectors would love to get their hands on, but can't because others have opened them, therefore there are none left.

If someone is willing to pay over the odds for an MOC pony, and then open it, then that's entirely up to them, as it's their pony. I just don't understand it, that's all. I mean, people are always complaining about how they have no money on here, yet people buy MOC's and then open them. *shrugs*

And BTW, if anyone has any MOCs they can't get rid of, please, swing them my way!!
