Location for the next 4 pony fairs!!!

Well I don't think its laziness or anything either. I imagine its tons of work to decide on a location then vote on it and then get prices only to wind up going with the runner-up winner location then have people going mental because they don't like the location.

*shrugs* I've never been able to afford to go unless it was near Wisconsin. Green Bay has deals and cheap hotels, but the location may not suit anyone here except me and a few others around here.

Next year I want to go to Chicago and then save up for Disney because I've always wanted to go there and I've never been there so i want that more than Vegas for pony convention. Flights aren't cheap and not everyone can get a deal on it. In order to enjoy the trip it will be expensive hands down. People with children really feel it. I still feel the fair needs to rotate to make it a chance for someone to at least attend.

I dont mind if its in Vegas. I need to start saving now then so my daugter and I cant attend. We were going to go to Disney in March and then back again in October for Mickeys Halloween party but looks like now we need to nix one of the Disney trips.. I dont mind though... VEGAS... Here we come!!

I would LIVE in Vegas if I thought my nerves could handle it! I absolutely love it there, and now this is just another excuse for me to get out there again next summer, and the one after...

Is there a specific date? Gotta start planning! :).

Heh my parents wanted to rent an RV to go drive through the southwest US next summer... I'll see if we can plan that around the fair and just drive on in :p I'd like to go lol, but hopefully it won't be quite so early in June again. School got out the week the fair was. .-.
I wish it'd be moving around though, the Northwest US is sadly neglected. (California is a good day or two drive from Washington and upper Oregon, you know)

I was in Vegas for the first time last summer... I completely understand money problems for most people, including myself but...

As far as bringing children to Vegas, it's perfectly fine. There are several hundred places specifically geared towards children.
Sure late at night, there are drunks walking about the strip.. but I'm sure your children will be safe in bed at that time.
I can't stress enough how many activities, shows, and hotels, are child friendly.

Just my opinion, but I really feel its a very good vacation for the entire family these days.
I know I had a great time with mine.

It's pretty far from Baltimore, but sure, why not. I plan on going next year :)

And hey, for those of you Eastern US people--don't forget the Mid-Atlantic Pony Meets! I've been hosting them yearly for 5 years now, and if you can't get to the Fair but need your pony fix, it might be a solution for you. It's no MLP Fair but we always have a great time! And with enough notice, I can work out some special things for us, too. :)

I gave a Pinkie Pie purse to a lovely 5 year old named Lois, whose daddy saw the article for the Fair in the paper and decided to bring her down to check out the ponies. I saw them again as I was leaving, and little Lois had a nice sized bag of pony JOY with her, and dad was looking like he was feeling like SuperDad.

That is one of the sweetest things I have heard in a while. Made my heart swell 3 sizes bigger. Thanks Kar!!

Sigh. It is too bad for me that I live very far from Vegas.

Personally i think that sucks. Guess I won't be going for 4 years.

Not everyone can afford to fly, plus hotel costs and everything. Especially with the economy the way it is.

Guess I'll be saving my money for Dragon Con instead

We can have a pony table at Dragon Con. :) I'm just outside Atlanta :bounce:

After reading all of this, i would really have to agree w/ Shepvet! I think it is very awlful that it is going to be in Vegas the next 4 years. I think it should of stayed the same in rotating the fair throughout the States. It seems it has taken a turn for the worse. I will not be joining to any of them there! I would like to go, and i guess if i saved up and took away from my 4 children all year i could afford it. But you know, my kids come first and where i go they go and it sure wont be to Vegas w/ 4 girls! I think its a big mistake. But really thinking about it, i only broke even when i went to the fair in Memphis. Yeah you get to meet a lot of pony people and find and see lots of ponies, but dont you do that anyways on here? You can find the same deals online that i seen there! Plus if you are wanting to make money, i made more on ebay when i got home than i did at the fair. I just find the reason for me not to go rather to go a little more ethical when you have a family! My Little Pony used to be about kids and fun times and reasonable prices, doesnt sound like it anymore. I am sure everyone has a different opinion on the subject, but this is my opinion and w/ 2 bad experiences under my belt now from the fair process, i will not be going anymore.

Totally agreeing with you, sevenbelles. I thought part of the point of the MLP FAir was to move it around so everyone could go at one point. It being in Las Vegas for four years in a row defeats that entire idea. Fewer and fewer people can afford plane tickets OR even the gas it would take to drive to LV. And LV is in the west... FAR away from a good chunk of collectors.

I've been saying it for years and I'll say it again. It should be in Chicago.

hey thats only... 3,574 Km away from me... yeah thats probably a not gonna happen... which is sad because I really wanted to go to the fair next year...

I checked out Greyhound prices and a round trip ticket for a weekend is $394...

Hi

I understand that the location will always make some people not able to attend. I get that.

I agree with lots of you on here about money, travling and location but most of all the fair should be in a different location every year.

Before anymore is said lets give the fair staff a fair chance to explain, we are kind of getting second hand information because most of us wernt at a fair yet.

:apple: look at dancing apple, now laugh

Warning! Teal deer crossing!

I might be in the minority, but I'm thrilled that the Fair will be making an extended stay in Vegas. I understand that it's disappointing if you were hoping that the Fair would someday come to your own backyard, so to speak. Personally, I much prefer knowing exactly where and when to expect big events like this over praying to the pony gods that the Fair comes somewhere between KC and SLC before I die. It takes a lot of planning and price-shopping for me to be able to go anywhere out of state, so finding out the date and location of the next convention only months beforehand usually doesn't work out for me. This way, at least I have a hope of actually making it to the Fair before 2013. :D I do like the idea of moving it around the country to try to be fair to as many people as possible, but that's obviously not very cost-effective for WF and her crew, and the more money they don't have to shell out for space, the more they can spend on fun stuff!

I'm really surprised that some people have the impression that Vegas is too ritzy and/or unsafe. (Too much CSI? lol) I've found the opposite to be true on both counts, and the only rude and pushy people I've come across are the tourists themselves.

As a few people have already mentioned, Las Vegas is a huge tourist/convention town, so it's incredibly easy to find great travel deals since their income is almost entirely reliant on getting people to come to their city. There are often special roundtrip flights from here to Vegas for under $100 per person, and there are tons of package deals out there. You can get nice affordable rooms right on the Strip -- Circus Circus definitely, especially if you have kids -- or off the Strip but quite swanky for a bit more. (The reason being that TPTB fully expect to make all that money back through their casinos. I don't gamble personally, despite (because of?) being raised in Las Vegas, so that's just more pony money for me.)

Las Vegas has admittedly earned its "Sin City" reputation through its extensive history of adult entertainment, but it's actually a great family vacation spot too. There's plenty to do and see for kids as well as adults that doesn't involve gambling or showgirls and is often very affordable, if not totally free, and wouldn't even require a car to get to. Not to mention the famous shows like Stomp, Blue Man Group, etc... I'm starting to sound like a commercial here, hehe. Here's a good link if you're interested in what Vegas has to offer besides parting fools with their money. My husband is much more interested in going to a city where there's something interesting for him to do while I geek out on MLP. No offense to Memphis or Providence, but they didn't give me much to offer by way of spousal incentives. ;)

If you ever hear of any of those deals that are valid for those of us flying out of the DC metro area, please let me know.

Will do! ^_^

...or were you being sarcastic? It's hard for me to tell.

ETA: Well, now that I read over your previous statements, I can see that you were indeed being sarcastic and have no intention of willingly going to Las Vegas. *shrug* Consider my cheeriness duly rescinded.

Wait, okay, now I'm confused. I heard while at this years Fair that the next one won't be for another 4 years and it will be in Vegas.

Is it that the Fair won't be for another 4 years from now, or is it that for the next 4 years, it will be in Vegas?

Oo?

~~Bee

oh my gosh!! don't even say that! wouldn't that be awful???

It's definitely more likely for me to attend them if they're in Vegas...it's about a day's drive or less for me

Bee, I think you had a pony in your ear when they made the announcement. :) It was definitely that the fair would be in Vegas 4 years in a row, and then possibly back to Providence for the 5th, since it would then be the 30th birthday of MLP.

I really think

I really think that choosing a more permanent location was the only suitable thing to do. Vegas has good prices on flights if you keep watch--even from the east coast and the midwest. Southwest flies there so if you choose early you can often get good prices from them (for instance $69 each way from Chicago or Indy--can't remember which)--sometimes the times suck but if you want to go the cheapest route you can. I think that overall there are more travel deals to Vegas than most other locations in the US--which I am sure was a big draw to the staff to keep attendance up.

One good thing to point out is if you do want to make a vacation out of it you really can if you rent a car. The Hoover Dam is very close and the Grand Canyon is but a few hours away. Also Los Angeles is something like 5 hours.

Also you can get good prices on hotels there and most hotels that are off the strip offer shuttles to take you places for free--for instance we stayed in Henderson for $68 a night for a really nice (think 4 poster bed and marble sinks) place called the Sunset Strip. They had shuttles running during the day to different places.

Personally to me it doesn't matter where it is as I will go--it would have to be something crazy like a $500 plus flight to make me start to think about not going--it's the one thing I have to look forward to in the summer so it's totally worth it to blow a few hundred.
