Location for the next 4 pony fairs!!!

Actually, I think Vegas is quite inexpenisive because the gaming industry is the main source of income. I think New York City would probably be the most expensive for food, hotel, transportation etc.
:::sighs::: I wish it would be in California. I PCH,jump into the pacific ocean at random..

Hi

I have never been but didnt people say that was the most expensive place to stay for hothat stuff?

Plus i thought the whole point of the fair was to move around the us to give everyone a chance at going?

:|

I agree 100%
...maybe I'll see you a DragonCon. Hah.

HAHAHAHAHA

You know, as awesome as ponies are, I'd pick Dragon Con over the convention too (cause it would be pricey to go -period) also: people from up here drive down to Dragon Con and do awesome road trips...

or worldcon, that was awesome (got to go when it stopped in Toronto a few years ago)

aaanyways, BAJ and Druisilla, I like this idea of having a Canadian run one. I don't suggest Niagara Falls at ALL, would be the most pricey! If anything, I can get connections with people about the (cheaper) hotels with convention space. It all depends on how much space we need...

or we could try and "piggy baclk" with another convention to start off and then grow over time ;)

Man. What a shame. The whole appeal to me was that it changed every year, giving everyone a chance and being accessible (when it's on the East side of the USA) to us Europeans, too.

I have nothing against Vegas, would love the excuse to go there again, but the same venue for four years? I wish someone from the Fair Staff would explain why it's staying still.

You know, one of the best things about this is that those of us that live o/s have a chance to attend. Now I know it's going to be in Vegas (yay! I love the place - it's so not full of deviants!) for the next four years it gives me a real opportunity to save and plan my trip well in advance. Of course lots of people are going to think the idea sucks, but like every other fair, you make the choice whether or not to go no-one else makes it for you.

So.... For us here in the South East, that sucks. Esp since I couldn't drive the 9 hours or so the Memphis, or the even further distance to RI. Living here is Florida SUCKS, LOL. Esp since my ranch critters tie me down and most people won't be able to afford air fair, hotel room and definitely couldn't afford what vegas offers.

Looking ahead for kicks to try to beg my hubby with: Prices are still really high be it next week or next year. NON holiday. Roughly $500-700 a person. For our family of 4 (2 adults, 1-13 year old, 1-11 year old) at the CHEAPEST hotel, cheap flight, $1500-2000 on average IF booked a year in advance. Going now, add $100-200 a person depending on how close it is to when you book the flight. BEFORE food, before pony pony, before doing anything in Vegas. Sure makes me wish I had the money to have driven to the 2 in Memphis and RI. Because with my hubby finishing his PhD and my saving for my girls college expenses and trying to find money just to drive our cars and pay for food (with most of the wheat destroyed in the Floods, can you imagine what groceries will jump up too? Almost everything uses wheat, LOL and of course the people who determine each grocery cost WILL raise the price when they think they can. After all, when gas goes up, so does our food bill. When disaster hit a crop, all food goes up it seems, because it can.)

All well! Fun idea!

Looking at the difference of flying out west or to a more appealing vacation spot...... Sure makes the decision harder IF I ever could travel to a fair farther away, as to whether I go to a UK Con or a USA fair. Either way, I have to go into debt and find a TRUSTWORTHY live in ranch hand for a week or so........ Which we would have to afford, LOL. And things are only going to get tighter. On another note, I didn't have a honeymoon 14 years ago thanks to the Navy, all "vacations" have been 1-3 days visits within 2-3 hours of home, LOL. I know I could more easily talk the hubby into going on a REAL vacation in the UK or Germany Pony events than flying out to Vegas. We also do not gamble or heavily spluge and having driven through Vegas and NOT caring much for it when the Navy moved us from Idaho Falls to San Diego CA back 13 years ago, I have no desire to go back. The pony fair would be the only reason and in truth, the UK sounds more interesting.

At least people will be able to plan more in order to attend the fair but I now have to go tell my girls that it will probably NOT come to Florida or back to the East while they live at home. Part of the fun really was, the fact the fair could be anywhere and the MAYBE was always a possibility.

Thanks for letting us know :) I can dream but I dunno if I will ever get the chance to go now and that's a bit sad for my girls and I.......

Sure Niagara Falls can expensive but we could always have it here in Welland hehe and Niagara Falls is only 15 minutes from here. People can fly into Buffalo and come accross to here! Or somewhere else in the Niagara region would be great, can you tell I don't want to go too far from home lol So maybe lets just have a pony meet instead!

princessluna may be coming to visit me sometime in July so it would be awesome if we could all get together when she would be here!

hmmm, vegas you say? I think you can find discounted flights and discount codes to fly out to vegas certain times of the year. This may be a possibility for me in the next 2 years.

*sigh*Well I suppose the good thing about it is I have plunty of time to save up to go there, since it will be staying in one spot for four years.I have never had any desire to go to Vegas since it seems like one giant cassino, but I suppose if all you nice pony peeps will be there it will be ok.^-^

After reading all of this, i would really have to agree w/ Shepvet! I think it is very awlful that it is going to be in Vegas the next 4 years. I think it should of stayed the same in rotating the fair throughout the States. It seems it has taken a turn for the worse. I will not be joining to any of them there! I would like to go, and i guess if i saved up and took away from my 4 children all year i could afford it. But you know, my kids come first and where i go they go and it sure wont be to Vegas w/ 4 girls! I think its a big mistake. But really thinking about it, i only broke even when i went to the fair in Memphis. Yeah you get to meet a lot of pony people and find and see lots of ponies, but dont you do that anyways on here? You can find the same deals online that i seen there! Plus if you are wanting to make money, i made more on ebay when i got home than i did at the fair. I just find the reason for me not to go rather to go a little more ethical when you have a family! My Little Pony used to be about kids and fun times and reasonable prices, doesnt sound like it anymore. I am sure everyone has a different opinion on the subject, but this is my opinion and w/ 2 bad experiences under my belt now from the fair process, i will not be going anymore.

This definitely isn't a rumor, it was announced by the fair staff yesterday.

Although I'm not really pleased about it myself, I can think of a few very good reasons for doing it like this. It's probably fairly cheap, since Vegas is sort of set up for conventions. The four years in a row thing is probably because of a contract, which probably means additional savings for the fair budget. Also, I'd imagine scouting and negotiating new locations every year is a lot of hard work and money spent for the fair staff personally.

The fair staff is not lazy or greedy; I'd imagine any effort and money spared by having it in Vegas for 4 years will go straight back into the fair in another form. Like more elaborate planning of the fair itself, and who knows, possibly cheaper exclusives. :)

But I'm just speculating; the staff did mention that they would be posting a full explanation of their reasoning in response to the loads of complaints they knew they were going to get. Just give them a chance to get home and recover a bit first. :icon_sleepy:

You're 100% correct, Trillion. The cost in Providence is much higher than Las Vegas. And keeping it in the same place creates a relationship between the venue and the hotels. Hotels and the convention center will be able to give better deals knowing that they'll have more people coming.

The downside is that anyone far away will have trouble getting there for the next 4 years. It's likely that I will not be going to Vegas because of the price of flights and hotels- and getting more time off work. I'll have to wait 5 years for it to come back here.

I don't think the fair staff is greedy or lazy. They probably has a good reason. I hope they post those soon so that I can feel better about the fair and THEIR needs.

I do thinks its sad that in making the fair less expensive to hold (and if a contract is part of the reason, it is good business sense IF you don't lose money on alot of people no longer able to attend) means that alot of people would have to pay alot more money to attend and MOST people attend because it's closer to home and they have a prayer of affording to go.

For the handful with a budget that allows costly vacations or who are able to somehow make that kind of money and not find a more pressing need for it (Gosh! I wish, LOL. I save and then the roof will leak or the car will break *wry grin*), than this is probably great for them (assuming they like Vegas, LOL)

For the rest of us? Esp families? On todays limited income and job security? Wow. This is a crushing blow.

But, I'm sure the Fair folks have a reason I just know that I won't be the only heartbroken one who won't get a chance to attend the next 4 fairs (or longer depending on what they decide later). But maybe I'll be blessed and money won't be so worrysome for us as hubby finishes his PhD........ And if that happens, awesome. But I've got kids and their college ahead....... Pigs may fly *sigh*

Oh yeah, I forgot that bit, Skyrocket. They also mentioned that there was a possibility of going back to RI once every 5 years to coordinate with Hasbro.

I understand what you're saying ShepVet, and you're not wrong at all, I just mean to say that I see why they're doing it this way.

hun, I PM'ed you about the contact I've had with Drusilla about the Canadian fair. :D

Knowing that it is going to be so far away for the next 4 years really makes me wish I had gone this year. Although, the soon to be husband has been wanting to go to Vegas, so maybe I can get him to take me out there one year. More than the pony deals, I just wanted to meet many of you in person. I think that would be the best part for me.

I felt off about vegas too, but I went a year or two ago for about a month, and it was AWESOME.

You don't have to gamble, you don't have to spend a ton of money, there is a ton of stuff to do and see even without that.

and the food...mmmmmm the food...vegas has the best buffets in the world. they are usually about 40 bucks, but worth it. Buffets with decent snow crab legs, lobster, filet mignon, on a buffet. Im a big girl, this is a good reason for me.

so i can justify a vegas mony meet to myself.

Woo-hoo! That's 3 hours driving distance for me, and my hubby will gladly drive us there and do something ELSE while I'm checking out all the ponies :)

Vegas prices are generally cheap and especially with the economy so low, they are cheaper than ever right now... don't know if that will last till next year but maybe :)

While I agree it is a bummer for those that live far away, I would think that it is more of a draw for whole families to make a vacation out of it. I was hoping to go to Rhode Island for this fair and my hubby had no interest in going with me. I didn't really want to make the trip alone... I would think more spouses would be willing to travel to Vegas because there is so much for everyone there...

I'm looking forward to my first Fair in 2009! :)

I actually wanted to plan a vacation to Vegas this year, but I couldn't find anyone to go with me. At least this way, I'll have pony people to hang out with. I'm already planning. Fly out Friday, come back Wednesday. If I'm going to make a trip there, its going to be a vacation.
It also helps that I love gambling, lol.

At least this way, we know where its going to be for the next 4 years. There's no wondering and anticipating the location. It gives people plenty of time to do research on hotel and flight prices, and also time to research other events as well, as well as tourist areas.

They made their decision for a reason. People are always going to complain about the location, no matter where it is.

Atlanta has conventions all the time. I don't know about Vegas being cheaper for conventions but I still think it sucks that the Fair isn't going to be rotated through the states for at least 4 years.

And if our only choices are going to be Vegas or Rhode Island I won't ever attend another Fair. Both are just too far away, especially when some of us have small children to care for.

Good for you that can save up and go, but like Sevenbelles said, my child comes first. Can't afford to save for a trip like this, let alone would I want to take a small child to Vegas.
