G4? No...it's the same generation people. There was no end of production, it's just a design change. Just as the sister ponies and dream beautys are not a different generation. We really should not call them G4 unless we go back and change the generation for every major design change.

G1... big plastic Pretty pony
G2... collectors pose
G3...normal ponies
G4 flutters?
G5 Sister ponies
G6 Dream Beauties?

No...we can't go that way. It's G3 until they stop production for a while then start up the line again. So please...for the love of pete...call them G3 chibis or something.

This is just my own very opinionated opinion...feel free to ignore me.

I agree with you whip. Yes, they're a bit radically different, but I don't think they warrant being considered a new generation. I think the whole comparing them to new molds, i.e. Sweetheart Sisters, Flutters, etc. Is a good argument. If every different mold were a new generation, we'd be in what, like G20 or something?

I agree I don't think they should be classed as a new generation. And I saw these in person when I stopped over at Singapore airport, and I have to say they're not that bad. Granted they're different, but they have their own unique cuteness:) (ducks for possible flying objects:))

I agree. I can't understand why they keep being called G4s when most people agreed that they aren't.

Yes, yes, yes. I agree completely. Not G4, just a new design.

New pony characters, new poses, new mold.... G4.

The Core 7 chibi-fied.... G3.

I kinda agree with all of you. LOL

The My Little Pony line does not always stop between generations, like G2 in Europe did not stop between G2 and G3, just changed the line. The difference between SHS and Flutter Ponies and shut is that these ponies do not run along side of a line but instead they replace the line with new molds and packaging. All of the points can be refuted either way. Pretty pony and Dream Beauties aren't even 'My Little Pony', and was not a long running line. All of the pony types you listed are still lines tha run together- in one year Flutter Ponies and Collector Posed ponies and normal ponies were all out together.

This is purely an opinion thing and a long-runnig debate. I think it depends on how long it will run. If we have 8 more years of these things and no more G3 posed ponies then I would definitely call that a generation. If no one likes these and they end in a day or so then they are darned well just a bad marketing decision.

Whether or not to call this new line G3 or Chibi ponies or G3.5 or whatever rests on the person. I myself do not think they are G3 and they're certainly not a subset of ponies like your example, as far as I know- it does not appear that we will have more standard-issue G3 ponies. I will be calling them G4s.

Like I said this is purely opinion. What one person calls the ponies hardly affects our community as a whole, I am sure that you can figure it out, and I don't believe this warrents yet another post.

Agreed completley. They're still the same ponies, but with different molds. They may be creepy and all, but I personally wouldn't refer to them as a whole new generation.

okay here is another way to look at it Emberly, In no other generation change have they continued the same pony with the same symbols from one generation to another. THey made Firefly in wildly different poses...but only in G1. They never made a G2 or G3 firefly. It's not G4 if they are still making rainbowdash and pinkie pie.

I'd have to agree with whip, who pretty much said it all for me :)

I can see valid points on both sides, but I won't be calling them G4s because the characters are the same. And if they continue making videos/books/etc, and the general themes remain (no adventures, no real problems, no evil villains), I'd say they are the same pony re-vamped not recreated. Of course, I haven't watched all the videos so someone tell me if I missed the one that was actually any good. But, I digress...

And sorry to anyone who likes the videos. I just grew up fighting smooze, not-too-evil witches, a cool cat lady with her minions, and a pretty-crazy-evil goat man thing.

I agree with Whippet...she speaks truth.

They aren't G4 until they have new symbols/names. If they use the name again (ie..Applejack G1 and G3)..then the symbol must be totally different to earn the right to be classified as a G4.

Dream Beauties aren't even 'My Little Pony',

Yes.... they... were? Do yo not see the logo or know the story behind them? Pretty pony was the first. THE first. Dream Beauties were running for a while actually. There's more of them then there are boy ponies. And they're SUH hard to find. I want my Spritzy.

Whippet is right hands down.

Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie are alike in appearance only, with the exception of Pinkie Pie having the same voice actress. All of the hundreds of other ponies have been completely discontinued, and the personalities and roles of the two remaining ponies have been altered virtually beyond recognition, and to a point where the new stories can no longer exist in the same time continuum as the stories written from 2003-2007. 2008's little coat-hanger pony line was in my opinion nothing more than a failed marketing experiment, during which the initial changes to the characters and the discontinuation of most of the previous ponies was instigated. I can't seriously call the 2009 ponies G3. It grates against the very core of my being to even call them My Little Pony, but unfortunately, that aspect of them it is not for me to decide. Whatever you want to call them, they are beyond the end of the line for me. To me, calling the latest additions to my collection "G3" is conveniently less verbose than calling them "2003-2007 ponies" in order to avoid confusion with 2009 and possibly later years. As for what to call them, I've been calling the aliens for quite some time now, but I suppose I could just as easily call them hairy little 2009 Chibis, or maybe Phonyvilles if that's easier for everybody.

Okay, enough of that for me.

OK... I think I'm gonna be the first to highly disagree. [EDIT: I took too long to type so this isn't true]
All of the different G1 ponies still had similar features... mainly their eyes.
If you look at the whole G1 line you can tell they're really related, even though some look drastically different from others (not as drastic as a bobble-head, mind you)

That's one of the biggest reasons I separate the "old style" with the "new style" by calling the new style G4. They're just TOO DIFFERENT. They don't seem like they came from the same minds that made the older G3's. Actually, they don't even look like they came from the same species as the creators of the older G3's... This is why they are G4 to me...

Some of you are making the point that this new style line cannot be G4 because it has the same characters. That's a really valid point, but frankly I don't think Hasbro would have created new characters even if they stopped producing ponies and then reintroduced them years later because in my opinion- Hasbro is being awfully lazy right now.
To only release 7 ponies has befuddled all of us, and I can't imagine that they would want to make new ponies for this new line. They're either insane, or they have their reasons for not making new characters.

Those are just my opinions. This is why I don't ever mention any of my political viewpoints on here, LOL! I don't want to fight with my fellow pony lovers!

[EDIT: forgot other crap I wanted to say!]
And the G3 line has also has other style ponies and we never called them G4... Ponyvilles and Breezies.
But they were not G4 because they were Ponyvilles and Breezies, they were separate and they had a logical reason to look different. Just like the Sweetheart Sisters and the Flutters had a logical reason to look different.

Personally, I don't care what you call them. If you wanna call Firefly "Chauncey", I DO NOT CARE, as long as you give me an idea of what you are talking about! Whether you say g4 or the new g3, I totally know what you're talking about and so does everyone else, so no big deal. why does it even matter? It's insane, I've actually seen people get into REAL arguments over this... LOL

I've been calling them G4. I mean I get your point, and if some people are actually fired up about this then of course I'll call them something different. My issue is this:

If not G4, can we please please please somehow establish one common thing to call them? Just for quick reference whenever someone wants to talk about them?

We can't call them "chibis" because when some people say "chibis," they're talking about the little Ponyville ponies or the G3 newborns or goodness knows what else.

I almost want to suggest "G3.5".

Or, hey: "the 2009/the 2010 ponies," depending on which year they end up hitting stores/dominating the pony stock.

Because to me they're pretty darn different. Hasbro discarded the old artwork, seems to have stopped making store-distributed G3s in the old poses, and for as far as I can see considers this a permanent switch. It's not like Dream Beauties because even if there are variations to the line (sparkle ponies, flutters, other gimmicks etc.), they will all be based off of this new style.

Although mainly I agree with Emberly - it all depends on how long this line ends up running. If it fails and is over in a year we'll hardly need a handy name for them at all, because we won't really need to talk about them. ("Remember those old things? The lumpy ones with the big eyes.")
