Bronies

On the subject of bronies not giving older ponies a chance: I, for the longest time, was an avid member of Ponychan. I had a habit of posting about my recent G1/3 pony finds because, at the time, I didn't know of here or the Arena. I'd of course post pictures of my ponies, and just some of the comments I got... :/ "Eew, old ponies." "Those don't belong here!" etc. And that's when I just said screw this site and relocated to here and the Arena. My boyfriend (who I've mentioned in a post on a similar thread here) eat, sleeps, and breathes G4s. To him, no other ponies exist. I try to show him my G1s, and all he says are, "They look ugly. Like... derpy hippos." I even tried to get him to watch the Big Brothers episode of the old cartoon with me. He didn't even give it a chance. I kinda gave up on trying to show off my oldies to other bronies. *shrugs*

I think part of the reason "bronies" get more flack than, say, someone who collects G3s not liking G1 would is that bronies DON'T seem to make a lot of inroads into the pre-existing MLP community. They're "out there", and I think that makes them seem more like . . . just some random person off the street.

If a pony collector says "Moondancer's pose looks like an elephant", I'm inclined to just laugh and say, "Yeah, it is kind of weird looking" (even though she's my favorite pony.) But if I had Moondancer at work and some random coworker said, "What's with the fat, weird pony?" . . . Thaaaat is something else again. It's like, "I don't walk over to your desk and pick on your crap, so why are you doing that at my desk? Have some respect."

I think right now, a lot of collectors lump bronies with "others" (the aunt who tells you MLP collecting is childish, the parent who keeps ragging on you to give it up) rather than "fellow collectors." It would probably help if the term "brony" didn't exist. Not because I hate the word, but because it makes it really easy to create a mental division, "us vs. them," and easy to assume that bronies are all "out there" somewhere, rather than on the same board as other collectors/fans. None of the other pony generations ever had their own individual word, so it really stands out.

Anyway, if more bronies take part at message boards like the TP and the Arena, I think these issues will smooth themselves out. I already see lots of pre-FIM pony collectors on Equestria Daily.

I went to a BronyCon in Portland and showed some guys a couple Mountain Boys I brought with me and they were actually really interested. In part because they were the first male ponies they'd seen, I imagine!

Can you make me a promise? Im really really sorry for even saying this if your boyfriend doesnt do this... I just want to make sure because its so important to me.

Don't let your boyfriend be mean to anyone like those people on ponychan were to you. Otherwise he isn't right for you. I'm sorry if it seems I'm judging too quickly, but I strongly feel that its wrong for a nice person to be in love with a mean person.... unless they stop being mean of course... but otherwise the nice person is too good for them.

:)

Oh, he knows better. He's just very opinionated. :p And I'm a firm believer of the phrase "To each their own." If he doesn't like G1s, then so what?

Yeah, he doesnt have to like G1s, just not be mean like a lot of people are. I'm glad he knows better. And once again Im sorry for how that might have sounded, I'm glad you took it well. :)

I thought Bronies were not just male fans but female also. I heard it referred to all the new pony fans streaming in masses due to the new show. The ones that kinda jumped on the bandwagon?

Hi folks,

I'm new here. I joined to keep an eye on pony news as I have two daughters who are mad on them and I must confess, I really like the new show myself. I grew up with a sister who was in to the G1 ponies and as an adult still collects them, plus I work as a designer in the film and tv industry and have also art directed a toy line for Hasbro, so I have an appreciation for good character and toy design. FIM ticks all the boxes. I think it's a spectacular reimagining and I love sharing it with my girls. I have probably spent way too much on them, but it's easy to spoil them when you like the property!

I'm a 36 year old father, so I'm not really the demographic the show is aimed at! I had heard the term Brony earlier this year. So does it apply to male pony fans? If so I guess that makes me one and I am happy to wear that label, but from what I am picking up in this thread, it's got a bit of a stigma attached now and has come to represent a subsection of perhaps less than pleasant male fans? Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to accept the label?

Not everyone feels that bronies are all bad, there my be a stigma to some but if you want to call yourself a brony - go ahead! You do fit the "demographic" and in my opinion bronies are awesome for their interest in the writing/creation/animation of the show as all of that appeals to me too :) A lot of people simply tie bronies to being massive fans of the show. Yes there is unsavoury behaviour from some "bronies" elsewhere on the net, but as it's been proven of late, not all collectors embody the spirit of love and acceptance either- something that I love so much about ponies.

That being said...

Yeah, and I want to say more but I'm having a hard time organizing my thoughts right now. I basically want to say I'm kind of sick of seeing the "them" vs. "us". I know they are different from us in the ways that they celebrate MLP, but I get the feeling that it's more than just a distinction in the way that the term is used, and that's what bugs me.

I too and fed up with the "them" vs "us" going on here.

I'd rather just see everyone as "Pony Enthusiasts" not matter what generation of pony they favour.
Just throwing my two cents out there :2011:

I think the problem is that there are several types of people calling themselves "bronies" which is why people have conflicting opinions about them. It depends on which "bronies" you personally have encountered.

There are the "good" bronies, the guys (or girls who use the name) who like FiM (and possibly earlier ponies) simply because they enjoy the show/toys.

Then you get what I call "brony lemmings" who've followed their friends/peers into the "cult" because it's "cool" to be a G4 pony fan.

And then there are the "bad apple bronies" who are spoiling it for the rest of them, writing sickening fanfiction and making references to it where kids are likely to see it, declaring "Faust is our goddess" and screaming at Hasbro whenever anything is not to their liking (Comic Con Pony announcement on Facebook, anyone?), and shouting and swearing at everyone as we MUST have the same opinion as them (even though they claim to "love and tolerate" everyone).

Let me get this out in the open; I have NO problem with people preferring one generation over another. To me these new "bronies" are no different to collectors we've known for years who collect only their favourite generation(s). I respect the fact that we all have different opinions and would never try to enforce mine on someone, and I think that's been the general feeling throughout the pony community for years. Has a G3-only collector ever come up to you and said "GET RID OF YOUR G1s BECAUSE I HATE THEM SO YOU SHOULD TOO!"? Thought not. But the "bad apple bronies" are different. They write hate mail.

Yes, hate mail. It seems to have become the "thing" to write threatening messages to people who have said positive things about G1/G3 movies on Youtube. I get people responding to comments I wrote FOUR YEARS ago telling me that they hope I "die of cancer" because I liked G3 Pinkie Pie! WTH?

And then my friend, who worked on a pre-G4 show, has had it worse than me. The worst thing is that he was in a serious car accident a few months ago, sustained a serious head injury and has been left with frequent headaches and a paralysed arm. He's had depression issues for years, and he's going through an awful lot right now. And yet, the "bad apple bronies" found his e-mail address. I presume they work in a gang, circulating it amongst themselves and he woke up to an inbox full of it. They've been writing a ton of hate mail to him, everything from the pure ridiculous, "Pinkie Pie should turn you into a cupcake" and "Discord is rubbing his hands together thinking of all the terrible things he could do to such a little person" (a nasty jibe as my friend is quite self conscious about his height) to the evil talk about cancer and, worst of all, "we hope you get into a car accident". That hurt even me. I can't imagine how he feels. Of course, they have no way of knowing he's already been in an accident but it's nasty all the same. Why the heck should he receive death wishes just because he worked on a kids' cartoon years ago? Anyone would think he was a serial killer!

Last night, his cousin (who has written kind things about him on the net in the past) had her e-mail address hacked. I'm just wondering if I'm going to be next...

A voice actress I know who was in the G3 movies has told me she receives "abusive letters from men who like the new MLP" too. She's not given me details, but said it was "all very strange".

I've actually lost the plot as to whether these "bronies" are even FiM fans or people just looking for an excuse to fight and bully people...

So yeah, I rambled far too much there but I think those are the kinds of "bronies" that make people wary. As I say, I'm sure they are a small percentage in the scheme of things, it's just that the "bad apple bronies" are far more vocal than the rest, at least in my case.

Hopefully that made some kind of sense anyway! :)

Wow I'm speechless.... those are definitely some horrible and hurtful things coming from people who claim to be loving and tolerant... I definitely agree that there's good bronies and bad ones though. :)

Lancer:

Wow that is really scary. D: Why are people getting so serious about a CARTOON about ponies? I think this whole brony thing is getting way out of hand. A lot more bronies are now on Memebase (yes I have an account on there) making new (evil) season two memes and talking about how they want to "kill all the G3 with fire and destroy the people who worked on it" and crap like that, but I have no idea that someone would take the time to hack the emails of people. Seriously, that is just going too far. :(

With the good you get the bad and the bad tend to be loud and scary.

I always thought brony was just a name for a male collector... bro - ny lol I am not sure what to make of it now :S
Although I will admit the only one I ever met seemed to dedicate like his whole life to pony's so I guess they are sort of like extremists ?

These are the people I think of when I hear the word "brony". Sickening, R-rated fanfiction, hate, etc. It's...sad, really. :/

I think sending someone hate male is a little, wait, make that a LOT worse than writing R-rated, X-rated, or XXX-rated fanfiction.

X-rated versions of cartoons have been around forever--look up Tijuana bibles sometime. (If you're not a minor. And not at work.) But spending the time to seek someone out and send them mean e-mails just because they worked on a toyline or cartoon you didn't like is just . . . takes a special kind of loserosity.

I guess that is the thing about the word "brony", everyone just applies their own definition to it, whether that's "male fans" or "new fans" or "really lame, rude fans."

If we're going by people who self-identify as brony, most of them are not too bad. I check Equestria Daily every day and most people there call themselves bronies and are nice enough.

imho the "brony" movement is the BEST thing to have happened to MLP since... ever, frankly. They are creative, inspiring and above all passionate. They've provided us with video games, animations, beautiful art, songs, song videos and comics. If people are REALLY going to be so narrow minded as to tarnish an ENTIRE fandom or subset of fandom with the same brush because of a FEW bad eggs, then I really don't know how they'll cope in the real world when they find out not everybody in their community is lovely. The world is made of good and bad and sadly the bad always shouts the loudest, and sadder still, the bad are always heard the clearest, too.

Every fandom - every COMMUNITY, every ANYTHING in which a group of people come together, will have good and bad. Bronies, like *everything else in the world* are largely, mainly even, good, but it's far easier to find the scapegoat and blame everything wrong with the fandom on them, I suppose.

I read death, gore, adult, sexual pony fanfic before most of you were even collecting, before the Arena existed, before G2 were even a blink in Hasbro's eye. I've written pony deathfic, I LOVE grimdark. I'm the nicest person you'll know, my room is pink, I'd never hate on anybody without reason and yes, oh yes, I'm a G-everything collector. And as for Bronys being mean and horrible? Good lord, you guys can't possibly have been around during the anti G2 wars, the trolls, hate, anger, downright spite that existed because some of us happened to like the G2s. Rotten people exist everywhere. Even in Ponyland.

PLEASE don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch, as AJ would say. Take a look on Equestria Daily and find the weath of beautiful new creativity to be discovered there. Everything is censored appropriately, and while yes, there is indeed fanfic not suitible for minors, there is also so much to be enjoyed by all ages. Judge for yourself, before you judge based on misconceptions. Isn't that entirely what the ponies themselves were guilty of when they shunned Zecora for being different? :p

It is in our natural instincts to be hateful. Arabs vs Jews...white people vs black people.... republicans vs democrats... bronies vs people who like G3s.... how's it any different? I strongly believe that despite what many people say, being spiritual is not the same as going by your natural instincts. In fact, its actually the act of rising above them, being aware of how ill intentioned they can make you, and deciding to be higher than them. It is the act of letting your heart take over your body, letting your beliefs decide how you behave instead of it being decided by how you're made.

So because they do all of these things supposedly, I say supposedly because I don't know much about "bronies", It justifies all of these hateful comments towards each other ?? I was sad to see this thread.. I just wanted to say that and I wont be looking at it again because as far as I am concerned this is a friendly community where people come to discuss something they collect and love not argue and ridicule each other. Just my two cents

I would really like to encourage everyone, both reading and participating in this discussion, to step back for just a moment. (That's also my polite way of warning that this thread will be closed and removed if the discussion doesn't simmer a bit).

And rather than continue to argue about bad apples vs good apples and the reality of their existence in any group of people, etc, I really want to encourage you all instead to be show the kind of respect for others that you would want to receive yourself in terms of this whole differentiation between people who like different generations and have different opinions toward them.

(I'm a G2 fan. I've been there. lol Trust me. ;))

I am not defending or condoning the people who behave disrespectfully and abhorrently. Those kinds of people are not part of this community.

Here at the Trading Post, we are all My Little Pony fans. This community was built on a mutual love for ponies and with a mutual respect for each other. New fans (whatever you want to call them) and old fans (likewise, whatever you want to call them) are equally welcome here, and we expect them both to be treated such.

It seems to me that many people in this thread have experienced the term "brony" in drastically different lights. I don't expect they will ever fully agree on the matter and so I won't even attempt to mediate there.

In sum, I've personally I've seen enough of this "them vs us" mentality, and I would love nothing more than to see it end. I would challenge any and all of you to turn this thread into one of understanding and acceptance of those who truly enrich our community instead of deepening the chasm that seems to continually divide further and further between us.

We're all in this together. I think it's time to put our differences aside.
