Just curious as to how everyone here collects their ponies. ^^

Do you:

1. Buy only the ponies you like?
2. Try to complete one set at a time?
3. Only buy bargin ponies?
4. Buy any pony you don't have?
5. Other methods?

I go back and forth between all the methods above (except number 2), but I noticed that my collection has almost DOUBLED since I joined the MLPTP two months ago!! (It wasn't very big though...I probably have around 160 right now...lost count with all the recent buying...hehe)

I'm not sure if I want a huge collection, so I'm thinking about only keeping the ponies that I really, really like...

Anyway, just wanted to see how everyone else collects!
^_^

I combine methods 1,3, & 4. lol I think I did a small cut on the G1s wanted while the G3s took a huge cut on my wish list a while back to remove ponies I wasn't really fond of, but there is still a lot I don't have on there. Since I've been here a little over a year I managed to more than triple my collection. XD

I also use somewhat of a mixture. Buying at garage sales or thrift stores I will buy basically any pony I see so that's how I end up getting a lot of random ponies. On the internet I basically get only ponies I really want, the only times I really think about set completing is if it's a set I really like. Like now I'm actively seeking out the last baby for my starlight babies because I love the set, whereas I've been one pony shy of completing the BBEs for perhaps 3 years and am in no rush to finish the set :p

It depends on where I buy my ponies. On fleamarkets and in charity shops, I usually buy all the G1s I can find, unless they're ridiculously expensive. I reckon that even if I don't need them, I'll find someone here or on the Arena who will. G2s or G3s I only buy if they're in a good state and / or cheap.

On eBay and here or on the Arena, I look for ponies I haven't got. I don't really do upgrades, unless a pony is totally baity, in which case I might look for another one. But I only look for ponies I like, not all of them. I have sets which are one pony short, and still I'm not inclined to buy that one pony because I just don't fancy it.

1. Buy only the ponies you like?
This is my first and biggest criterion. :) Now... there's a down side to this. When I go through a "Must weed out the collection! Too many ponies, too little space" moment, and decide I'm gonna just keep my favorites... Well, due to purchasing only ones I like, this purchasing habit becomes a liability. I LIKE THEM ALL. And so we remain overrun, much to hubby's despair. (with two collectors in the house, it was bound to happen)

2. Try to complete one set at a time?
I'm too distractable to do this with any success. hehe

3. Only buy bargin ponies?
This is the preference. I hate to pay more than $20 for a pony (Which will prevent success of method #1 in many cases... HEH) However, "bargain" is a relative term. $30 for a decent condition pony that usually sells for over $50 might be seen as a bargain (even if hubby disagrees HAHA). My kid bought a Diamond Dreams at the Fair for $10. She's got a split lip (not noticeable unless you squeeze her head), fuzzy hair and needs a lil help standing up (a DDD! --Drunk Diamond Dreams! lol), but to still, to us, she was a bargain! Any other pony in that shape would be bait, ya know? So yeah... bargain is a relative term.

4. Buy any pony you don't have?
Only if I like it, other than thrift shop/flea market/etc finds or super cheap lots. Then it's considered "rescue" work and they all come home for spa work and resale or baiting. :)

5. Other methods?
...impulse... *sigh* (this is when you didn't realize you liked a pony, then suddenly she's in front of you and...)(so it doesn't conflict at all with #1 haha)

I've only just started collecting. my main ponies are the ones i had in childhood, so it's all still a bit of an adventure and for me at the moment! i still impulse buy, but as i very rarely see non-ponyville ponies for sale i feel like i have to buy them!

but if i'm looking on ebay i look for g1s, i adore boy ponies, and baby boy ponies so i've been seeking them out on ebay, but i can't stop the impulse buys in the shops, especially when i see non-ponyville ponies in the supermarket!

i also went to a market today and someone was sellingn g3s for £1.50 each, i know nothing about them, only that i think they're pretty...though still less ponyish than g1s, but not nightmare inducing like the plastic bigheads!;) so i just picked the ones i thought were pretty....all but one are pink/purple in colour...so maybe that's another way i'm collecting lol! if it's purple i want it!

Just curious as to how everyone here collects their ponies. ^^

I try to collect ponies I like/really want. I'm trying to stick to my wantlist at least for when I'm buying online. When pony hunting I tend to grab whoever is there, providing they're cheap enough and I like the look of them. Last time I was pony hunting I found a big box with '50 pence a pony' so I went searching through there and grabbed ones I liked the look of, and got a few of the girls on my wantlist but a few I just liked. Bascially it's a case if
Do I like it?
Do I own it already?
Is it affordable?
Can I clean them?

I started collecting G3s a few years ago before my daughter was born. I bought anything on sale, any special exclusives, and any pony that I thought was pretty. As a result I ended up with 300+ ponies. Now that I'm a mommy, I have less money and less space so I sold/traded a lot of my ponies. I kept just my favorite G3s and ones with special meaning to me. So my collection has dropped to about 30 or so, wow was that a big drop! Now I'm slowly collecting G1s from my childhood (based on my budget mainly), but I'm bad about trading for any pony that catches my eye. :)

I'm definitely a combination of all of these, I'll try to explain...

1. Buy only the ponies you like? Yep, pretty much! If I have like 5/6 ponies from a set, and I don't like the last pony- I won't actively look for it. That being said, I do sort of like to complete "sets" with my own definition.
2. Try to complete one set at a time? Not one at a time, no... But I like to complete "pose sets." I have all the G3 divas, now I'm hoping to start on the G1 Crumpet pose, and the G1 Dancing Butterflies pose... The pose of a pony pretty much determines how much I like it. I even have a Crumpet fakie and a diva fakie on the way!
3. Only buy bargin ponies? Not only, but I will definitely snatch up a ton of ponies at the thrift store, even if I don't like them.
4. Buy any pony you don't have? No not at all! I will buy a pony I like even if I already have 6 at home!
5. Other methods? I also love getting baits in my favorite poses.

when I got married I sold 90% of my collection, so when I started collecting again I only bought ponies I never had before, like the Mountain Boys, and some variants. Then the variant obsession kicked in high gear so that's what I mainly collect now, along with merch. For me, the "usual" ponies don't hold much interest for me, but the harder to find ones do! I complete sets I like, too, like the wingers and the B&G's & stuff. Eventually I'll have them all again, but until then I collect mostly variants.

I mostly just collect ponies I like. I'm pickier when buying from someone online than I am in person. I think if I saw ponies, especially G1s at a thrift store, flea market, whatever I'd probably buy them all unless they were way too expensive, whether or not they were on my wishlist.

1. Buy only the ponies you like?
Oh yes! Even on my wishlist, I only have ponies that I want. There's many I don't have that I don't really like so they're not there. That being said though, sometimes I take a second look at a pony pic online and I decide I like it after all and add it to my list.

2. Try to complete one set at a time?
Not really, but maybe I should. I've had 90% complete sets for years!

3. Only buy bargin ponies?
For selling and trading, yes, or if it's a nice lot. I also like the more expensive ponies but I try to find good deals on them.

4. Buy any pony you don't have?
Maybe if it came in a lot and it's just there I'll keep it :)

1. Buy only the ponies you like?
I do this to a point, i dont collect sea ponies shs or baby ponies, i also dont think im gunna go made trying to buy variants and stuff either.
Same for merch, i only buy what i like, i wont just buy something cuz its mlp, i have to like it too

2. Try to complete one set at a time?
I totally suck at compleating sets... everytime i try to it always goes wrong lol

3. Only buy bargin ponies?
I cant let a pony go! If im out carbooting i have to buy them all, this years been really budgeted, so ive left mcdonalds, random fakies, and G3 people want over 50p for...

4. Buy any pony you don't have?
If i see a pony thats on my want list ill buy it if i have the money!

5. Other methods?
I tend to see what people on the TP have for sale, and also whats up on ebay, i wount get in to bidding wars, as I know the pony will come up again, its not the end of the world :D

I am one of the few (that i know of) set collectors. I work on a few sets at a time but will get one from a 'new' set if I find it at a great price or find it in a thrift store. My 'OCD' demands that I finish a set though. I have a few sets that I am only missing one from and it bugs me each day :p It also helps (for now) to keep my herd small..ish...sorta.

I have probably only a little over 20 ponies. So I don't look at myself as a real collector. As money is an issue I don't spend much on ponies. I'll buy any cheap pony as long as it's one I like to look at. I do have a small wish list, and I do keep an eye out for those ponies. I also have a fondness for Cancer/Moldy ponies, That's pretty much all I've bought here on the post. Taking a really mucky pony and restoring it is the fun part to me.

1. Buy only the ponies you like? (yes)

2. Try to complete one set at a time? (No)

3. Only buy bargin ponies? (Yes)

4. Buy any pony you don't have? (yes)

I'm definitely a bargain pony hunter, the bulk of my collection is $1 yard sale finds. If it's cheap, I'll buy it, even if it's a duplicate or in bad condition.

I'm a bit more picky with new stuff. I'll buy the collectors ponies sometimes, and any holiday releases. And I love me some merch - pony jewelry or coloring books often sneak their way into my shopping cart. But I'm pretty picky about the regular ponies, I hadn't bought any for a long time until the mermaid ponyvilles, and I only bought one of those. Of course, I'm not a big core 7 fan, so maybe I'll go a bit crazy with the G4s. Or maybe not; back before core 7 I'd occasionally pick up a pony just based on whatever I though looked cute at the store. Of course, i had a lot less money and space then.

I'm finally getting around to the long task of cataloging my collection, so I imagine I'll start trying to trade some of my duplicates for set completers eventually. I've never really bought ponies on eBay, which would be more efficient, but it would be so easy to get spending out of hand.

So yeah, I guess I'm a bargain pony hunter at heart, but willing to make the occasional small splurge for something I really love.

My collecting tends to take me around the options:p I buy only the ponies I really like. They are either my ponies I once grew up with or have always wanted. Then I get close to completiting a set, so sometimes if I am close to that I will collect the finishing set! I go for any bargin I can. Rumage sales are my friends...still slow to Ebay and so forth, but if I can get a deal I go for it. I also have moments where I havent bought a pony and really want a new one:p So I buy some that I dont have or need:p I collect because they always make me happy. My child hood ponies always bring back memories of my childhood. Mine is not so big yet but I am sure some will be sold later in life...but I do find it hard to say good by to them:)
