How do you Collect?

Collecting Techniques

When I'm out shopping: It's ALL about the hunt for me. I love love LOVE to go pony hunting! (That's what we call the thrift shop/garage sale/antique store pony searches) My daughter and I make a game of it. I feel like a kid again when my daughter and I go Pony hunting. So it's really more about the fun of searching and the thrill of finding one! It's just a fun to go looking for those elusive ponies and then to discover one at a sale or thrift store!

And for the most part - we ALWAYS buy whatever ponies we have found. Even if they are doubles, even if they are baits. I think it's the adrenaline of the hunt that forces a purchase. After all - you don't go turkey hunting, track him through the woods, fire a gazilion shots at him, miss every time and then finally shoot your turkey and then decide "Oh he's too small to bother with" and leave him there in the field! Oh no! You pick him up, say to yourself, "Bullseye! We're having Turkey tonight!" Wrap him up, take him home, clean him up and have a fabulous dinner :D

Actually, I think it's more like more like Easter egg hunting... Only there's ponies in them eggs!! ... well ponies without the eggs, but ponies none the less lol :D

Um, online when I shop for ponies I choose the ones that are first discount and affordable, once again - now hunting for the bargin :) and looking to find the ones that I don't already have and that will complete a set, but I will pass up a pony that will complete a set for one that is harder to find for the same price. Online, I almost always purchase lots with at least 5 ponies in it. I do this because I HATE to pay shipping. I don't mind paying more for the pony, I just HATE to give all that money to the US Postal Service. They're just so dang expensive! And YES, there are some ponies I just don't even look at while online, but if I were out pony hunting at a thrift store I would buy them and those are the ponies that I don't really care for, like Seaponies... I never liked seaponies. In fact, there is only one sea pony I want and it's Celebrate from the G1 Birthday Party Pack. She's the ONLY seapony I ever look for.

I don't buy international ponies, they just seem so expensive! I only own one and it's an Italian Blossom AKA Lila.

I will say this, it's helped me to organize which ponies I wanted to buy online by printing out the G1 & G3 checklists. I haven't found a G2 checklist yet and I hardly have any G2 MLP stuff at all. That way I could look at my checklist and see what I needed to complete a set and then I can search them online. There is just so much more available online than in the stores. It does help to set some collecting goals for myself, it just makes the hobby more fun. Then Checking off which collections I've completed.

If I'm getting them online, I mostly buy/bid on the ponies I like.

There is hardly any kind of physical store here where I can find them, but if there's a slight chance of me coming across them, I'd buy like everything.

Do you:

1. Buy only the ponies you like?

of course if its a pony I like im definately gonna go after it.

2. Try to complete one set at a time?

yes im a set completest I know theres always that 1 evlusive pony that I have to go after to complete that set. I think when I have a new pony room ill display my ponies in sets.

3. Only buy bargin ponies?

yes I usually buy up any ponies I can find.

4. Buy any pony you don't have?

Yes I do buy ponies I don't have its alot more fun that way.
5. Other methods?

I also like going to thift stores and finding ponies that way.

lol i did tend to go for set completers but i do go for favs lol which i shouldnt but hey thats just me. i collect ponies in all states so i might not have a mint version of a pony but at least i have it and thats all good with me. Sea ponies have become priority tho

I didn't even intend to start collecting.. and I haven't exactly started yet.

I went on the internet to do my research as I'm supposed to be selling my old ponies, then I found this and other communities, and I kept looking at pictures and the nostalgia built up pretty quickly, and now I'm obsessed with the idea of getting Sunlight, the 1983 Rainbow Pony to complete that set, as I realised I have all of the others.

I think I'll work on sets, really. Maybe not one set at a time, but I won't randomly buy ponies... Well.. I'll try not to... Okay, I probably will if I like them.. Oh dear.. This won't end well...

No, I'll definitely try to stick to sets, as I have a few that're either complete or nearly complete from my ponies as a child... Plus, I like them all to have their friends around...

When I started collecting, I bought every pony I didn't have. That led to I having ponies that I'm not really thrilled about owning, and lots of re-releases (I collect G3).

Now, I only collect ponies that I like. I'm not concerned with completing sets or having every pony and every pony thing--I want to have the ones I really like! :3 It's been more fun for me buying ponies with "do I like it?" in mind, rather than, "what am I missing????"
