I've been thinking about this lately what with a few things that have been going on. So I wonder if any of you have ever been scammed or caught in something a bit dodgy while buying ponies, either in the community as a whole or on ebay?

If so could you tell me:

Who was involved?
When it happened?
What happened?
And where?

And any other details. I'm just wondering how wide spread this is and if you know of anyone else who has been scammed could you point them over to this thread please. I'm interested to see how many of us have been affected by this sort of thing.

Thanks everyone!

I remember back in the day we used to have a scammer/bad trader log here on the post...if my old-timer memory isn't lacking. :D

It's such a shame when those things happen. I've been very lucky.

We have a sticked post in Trader Feedback but I am wondering as there's been a few major scams over the years.

There's been a few sites over the years such and Ponyland Police and yes the info on ezboard that was lost in the hack. That ezboard hack also affected Fiona's Feedback forum since that was ezboard based as well.

I've been lucky too I must say but I know many haven't been so fortunate.

My first ever Ebay purchase was a scam. I bought the complete set of Aus McDonald's Ponies MIP for 0.99. The seller had 100% positive feedback, and then the items not received negatives started rolling in and he was NARU'd. As my purchase was only 0.99 I didn't get it back, but consider myself lucky as I learnt a great lesson straight off the bat and haven't been scammed since (touch wood).

I don't know if it would be considered a scam but I entered a member run contest on here (so no names in public... if you really want to know PM me) where I won I think two prizes but never received them and the member avoided the subject when I tried to bring it up...

Ouch, that sucks. I mean, don't have a contest if you're not going to send out the prizes! *shakes head*

Anyone who'd rather not mention names do feel free to PM me with the details.

Princess Pinkstar do you have the ebay name? I wonder if it's the ame person I'm thinking of.

I've been scammed a lot on EBAY. I remember the first time I bought a book from EBAY that never arrived, the seller got her account deleted and I'm sure she ripped off a lot of people too. Then there were times where I bought a SS pony from EBAY that says it was mint but was full of flocking loss that was hidden from the blurry photos. Of course I've also fallen prey to sellers that love to over ship, some even 3 times more than the real postage price.

I guess theres different ways to be scammed....

I've recieved items that were in worse shape than described. But I think almost all of us have gone through this.

I also got grossly over charged for shipping once but I refused to pay it and disputed it with e-bay and they sided in my favor.

My worse seller experience is one I'm not going to go into agian as many of you may be aware of what I'm talking about. But I will say a veteran e-bay seller who had very good feedback went out of their way to break policies in order to harm my reputation. And they got away with a lot.....to me that seemed like a scam.

I think I have been lucky on the scam front. There were times when things have been in poorer condition that stated or not come in the mail, but I have always been refunded, so I would hardly call that a scam since it was worked out.

I'm not sure whether this counts...

I recently bought two ponies on ebay, sold together in one listing from the seller. Only one pony arrived in the package, though.

I'm willing to give the seller the benefit of the doubt though...am giving seller a chance to "come clean" as it were. So, I'm stopping by the post office tomorrow to see if the missing pony had dropped out of the package.

One thing makes me suspicious, though...
On the listing, it says "I am not responsible for lost items" Shouldn't the seller at least try to make sure the package arrives well? The padded envelope was sealed with only one strip of scotch tape...
...and the listing didn't have any option for insurance, from what I could see.

Still, I did get a very much coveted pony, though...one I've always wanted but never had until now. It's not a total loss.

In that situation, you should ask the seller for insurance when you get your invoice. A lot of sellers won't automatically add it for you. Especially if the ponies your buying are expensive, its always a good idea, that way if something does get lost, your covered :)

I'm not making excuses for this seller b/c I don't know the situation, but most people including myself put a disclaimer in their auctions stating they will not be responsible for items that are lost or stolen in the mail. So you really shouldn't feel like thats a "red flag" or anything :) Its simply b/c we can't be held accountable for something once its out of our hands. At that point its USPS's problem.

If she's claiming that she did indeed mail it, ask her for proof that two ponies were mailed, like an itemized reciept. That way you know it is the mailing system's fault and not the sellers. If a pony did indeed "fall out" of the package, then obviously the seller did not do a very good job of packaging and in that instance, she should compensate some of your shipping charge.

I hope your able to recover your lost pony!

Ive been scamed on ebay - bought a MIB Starcatcher who never turnt up - I was not the only one who fell for that, also ive been scammed twice on Happy Tails Tabby, I think its a sign i'm destined not to have her! lmao!

ive been over charged on p and p, had ponies arrive ruined from were they have just been put in an envelope. unfortunatly it happens :(

On a selling note - You should only send with insurance, as if some one buys from u using paypal then you will be liable, I only offer recorded delivary for ebay *nods* even getting a recipt wont cover you, it should always be tracked or signed for. If you get a dispute and you havent done this you have no proof of posting.

I was scammed in February as was another member on the boards. We both bought from a Canadian seller on ebay called "Schaffershopper0" (sp?). I won over $100 in ponies (4 auctions) and was charged $95 for surface shipping.

Given surface from Canada to Australia takes around 4 months I trusted that they would arrive, so when the paypal deadline to claim came and went I didn't claim as I knew they'd still be on their way. Turns out they were never sent, the seller went NARU and I lost $200. Their e-mail was closed and they just disappeared. As if they were never even there.

I'm still fuming about it as it was money I couldn't afford at the time and I was really excited about the purchase and still retained some faith until a couple of months back that the box would eventually arrive.

Had I have known then what I do now, I would have claimed with paypal without hesitation just to be safe if nothing else.

In addition I had a pony sent out to me from Germany that didn't arrive so I lost another $15 there. Not as bad as the previous and I'm not entirely sure it was a scam but I've a bad feeling.

Being scammed really makes you feel stupid. Stupid and angry that is.

Collector1 that's just the sort of info I want thanks. I just wonder is the other person you mentioned a member here? Or could you give them a point towards this thread for me please? Often people who scam others do this again and again sometimes with years break in between and sometimes under different names. It never ceases to surprise me at how many times a person can do this and still get away with it.

To clarify generally speaking a scam is when someone takes your money knowing full well that they aren't going to send out anything, or a person who ends up not sending out items when they've been paid for (whether that was their original intent or not!) and just disappears. Other things tend to fall under bad sellers and poor practises but I'd like to hear about those too. As there's a very fine line.

Being scammed is never very nice for the poor buyers. I'm so sorry to those of you who've had to deal with this and thanks so much for sharing.

I´ve been scammed by a person that called it self Eva (something, can´t remember the last name). It was a few yaers ago when I wanted to buy a MOC pony on a place called "Blocket".... I sended "her" the money and never got any pony.... but the person shouldn´t had picked me to fight with.... I called the police and they tracked "her" down.... it turned out to be a he..... and he said that he had never gotten the money.... then I showed the police the recite and then he said that his girlfriend was the one doing the deals and that she had left him... anyways, it all turned out the way that he had to pay me my money back.....

So if you are a scamer, whatch it! I´m hunting you down and getting my stuff back!:tongue2:

I agree. But she didn't specify "not responsible for items lost in the mail" just said "not responsible for items lost." Given my current situation, I'm one to be very watchful of what is said. The perverse part of me asks whether one just "happens" to lose something while packing...I really hate the perverse part of me.

But, I'm also a VERY forgiving person, and I don't feel that if a pony was omitted in packing that such was intentional. I'm sure that if she finds the missing pony "kicking around" her place then she would just send it to me.

Still, it would have been better if she had sealed the package with box tape instead of scotch tape.

I guess that I was just really disappointed that she wasn't there.

Or maybe compensate me for some of the charge of the auction because they were listed together. My exact message to her went as follows:

"Hi. [Pony] arrived today, but [Pony2] wasn't in the package. Did you send them in the same package?"

I'm allowing for myself to recognize that I am probably just jumping at nothing. Again, I was disappointed....this is the first time that I've failed to receive my entire winnings.

I was scammed when I first started here, along with two or three others.

I can't remember who she was now, it was a long time ago.

The details.
----

I did a trade with her and it was great. Then I saw that she had a playset I wanted. I offered another trade and she accepted. I sent my end out. Nothing. Didn't hear from her to say it arrived (I had tracking, so it did.) I sent emails, nothing. I sent PMs, nothing. No Playset ever showed up. So I posted here. Found out a few others never got something from her. I looked at her email address, it was a hotmail. So I added her to my MSN. (This is about eight months after the initial bad trade) I get an MSN message "Hi, um, do I know you?" "Yeah, my name is Baby Nightmare from the MLPTP. Are you going to send my show stable out anytime soon?" She logs out and I never see her again. One of my friends (I did this in class at college) instantly adds her as well, low-and-behold, she was logged in, so she'd just blocked me. He sends a message along the same lines, and she blocks him. In all, five people added her within a half hour of each other to request my playset. I think she finally gave up on her MSN for the day. I never got my playset, but I felt a little better about everything after bugging her a little for it.

----

If details are wanted I can try and see if I have an old email anywhere from her...

Most of mine were a long time ago so I don't remember who they were.

One was a trade, i was supposed to get a plush Starshine but she never showed and the person would never respond back to me.

Another was a purchase of eBay where they never sent the items. I was supposed to get my money back from PayPal but they had already removed their funds so I got a big old nothing :(

Another was a custom swap I had set up, my partner was thebaddoggies, took her 2 years to get me my custom but at least I finally got something

In all since I've been re-collecting for 8 years I don't think i've done too bad *knocks on wood*
