Finished - Wizard of Oz Pony

I really like her! I'm a huge WOZ fan. I'm no expert on customs, but I don't think she looks "busy" at all...I LOVE how the winding road goes all the way around the pony and tells the story of Dorothy's journey to the Emerald City. I think all those little details are important.

If I could suggest anything, I would say maybe put the slippers somewhere else, maybe higher up on her cheek so that the focus is more on the body artwork. Or maybe you could simply just make her hooves glittery red (would that be cliche?). IDK though bc I love the ruby slippers!

What else I love:
-the hair is AWESOME! Yes, that def counts as the rainbow.
-the yellow brick road. The idea is genius but I like the way you painted it. You say you need to work on your detail painting but for the brick road, I like the way it came out. It has that hand-laid brick look, if that makes any sense.
-I love the fakie you used. When I first saw the expression of her face, she reminded me of the Wizard. Perfect!!

It's kind of funny that I happened to see this today. My little girl, Charlotte, is prancing around in her Dorothy dress as we speak!

She is a little busy, but she's very cute. --plus, live and learn, right? You have so many good ideas, maybe next time do a series of ponies! :D

Yeah, someone else mentioned a series too... I've seen some really cool sculpted stuff, but don't know if I'm up to making a lion yet! I should start working more with the clay you sent me and see if I can improve that. I ALMOST picked up some hair clips for her at the dollar store, because they had one in blue gingham, but decided she was busy enough already...

I know with the shoes, right? Total lack of planning on my part--I painted her with her head off, and didn't even think of where they were going to be in relation to the rest of the painting until I put her together :( Things like this, I'm sure, are why people draw designs first. I debated doing the hooves red, but went with silver as a bow to the book, where the slippers were silver, not ruby. Also, I thought the red feet would either look like she had trampled something bloody (NOT the tone I wanted) or like a christmas pony...In retrospect, I kind of think I should have painted the pony a more neutral color, with red hooves, and saved the emerald for the city instead of the background. Ah well. Live and learn and maybe I'll do another one someday?

Mostly the detail stuff I'm not happy with was in the house and the city; I like the road, but, man, was it tedious to do!

I'm glad you like her. I think part of my wavering on how much I like her is self-critical, and residual frustration with some of the issues I had painting her :)

You're right as to following the book, I didn't think of that. You made the right decision.

I am very self-critical too, lol. Do you draw? I'm thinking a drawing of this pony would be gorgeous. It's a lot easier to draw tiny details than to paint them so you could really do a lot with it on paper.

Well, I'd say I don't draw well... but then, I don't think I paint well either! I don't know if I could get a drawing that really showed everything, since she's so different from different angles. I could certainly sketch out the different elements though. If you (or anybody else reading this) wants to take a stab at drawing her, I'm totally okay with that, just ask that you credit me for having made the actual pony ;)

Hmmm...I was thinking it would be interesting if you broke down the elements in this pony and turned them into a series. --like the first pony had the house on it, the next had the poppies, etc...and maybe they all had the yellow brick road on them so you could stand them next to each other and it would connect. XD

I can't wait to see what you come up with next! ^_^ <3
