I'm not touching the racism thing, although I think the term you were looking for may have been something more along the lines of prejudice or discrimination. This caught my eye though:

if you had to pick only ONE pony to represent all that is "my little pony" (and that includes from a NON-collector's perspective)
That is precisely why I would have voted
against Rarity, had I not been Sick Unto Dying earlier in the week. If you ask the average person to describe My Little Pony, you're going to get something very similar to a pink, rainbow-haired unicorn covered in glitter and hearts. Far from being a "rarity", she's such an archetypal pony that she's practically cliche.
To me, Silver Rain is much more representative of what the current MLP line actually
is, for better or for worse. She's a pretty decent pony that could have been phenomenal and fell short of the mark due to some unknown factor on Hasbro's end. (I like to think their design team is made up of highly-trained, semi-sentient pterodactyls, personally.) I realize that Madness is more beauty pageant than presidential race, but I'd rather give my vote to a pony that I feel better represents the ponies of that year (even if none of said ponies made me shed tears of joy) than a pony that stands for what some dude thinks he remembers his sister playing with.
But in the end, meticulously considering the candidates isn't any more valid than just voting the party line. It
is only Madness, after all. ^_~
