Christianity: The preferred religion of My Little Pony?!

Hi there,

Listen guys... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to start a flame war or an arguement. I just got a little testy there for a moment and now look what I've started. :cry:

I take back all I said. I just don't like the way these topics come up. I just feel that if someone doesn't like it, they shouldn't complain to others about it and wreck it for them. I'm not trying to sound mean or talk in a bad tone. So please... no one take it that way.

Let's just say we forget about it and move on...? Again I appologize for getting a little loose tongued. Will anyone forgive me?

yeah, i should mention that i bought bright night, and keep her next to my bed (since she doesn't fit on my shelf with the other so-softs... something about her body shape is off). sometimes i make her say her prayer, just because her voice is so cute when she says "may angels watch me from the skiiiiiiiies... until the morning, when i rise!" like she had to think about the last line. XD

2 billion people out of 7 billion. christians are only a portion of all people who buy MLP. and i doubt there are THAT many christians who won't buy any secular toys. it just seems to me that you appeal to the broadest base when you don't target specific things like one religion, one race, one nationality, etc.

yeah but those 2 billions people have most of the wealth in the world and has the biggest consumer market. Think about it American, Europe, Australia, Canada and even Latin America combine them all and you have one gigantic market. America alone consumes most of the products out there, lolz, we are the biggest consumer out there (why do you think we're in debt - kind of sad though, lolz).

Like I said before Hasbro doesn't need to alway target every single person out there. For example, the black Barbie dolls, do you really think that the black Barbies were made SOLELY to target white little kids? No it was made also to bring this group of consumers "more" in to the brand. I know there are a lot of black people who buys barbie already but putting out black barbies can help increase that group from buying their brand. it's made to appeal more to this group in order for the company to increase their market size. And i personally think that out of all the groups out there with huge buying power, marketing one single pony just one (it's only ONE pony!!!!!!!!) that's geared towards christians will bring in more deeply religious christians in to the brand. You have no idea how many religious christians out there, don't be fooled by what the secular media tells you. I mean I'm sure they buy this either way but putting just ONE pony that's geared towards christians will definitely satisfy them ("religious" christians).

Yuixie - you don't have to apologize to what you said. You were probably just shocked at what starflower said i know i was, lolz.

get bent Vin! :x your condecending attitdude is very infuriating.

Yuixe, I can understand why you were momentarily upset. You apologized, and that's fine, I don't think you have anything to be sorry for now. :)

I have been posting actively on discussion boards since 2003. 100% of the time I have stayed away from flame wars, or posts that were sure to explode into some kind of unnecessary heated discussion.

However, in this case, I would like to say the following:

I, for one, personally find Hasbro releasing a pony that says a very BROAD spectrum "prayer", refreshing. I find it refreshing, because as being a citizen of a country mainly founded by Christians originally (Canada), and how, over the years, prayer of ANY kind has been pushed out of most schools, I was HAPPY to see a product I love, MLP, voice this delightful prayer.

While certainly Christianity is not the majority religion of the whole world, Christianity IS still the MAJORITY religion in, for example, Canada. Given that, I don't see how anyone could say it was a bad decision for Hasbro to release an item like Bright Night, given that, for example, Canada being one of their major markets, is Christian by majority.

This is not to say that I even necessarily believe that prayer to be solely Chistian, because I don't. I personally feel that prayer is border-line secular, as there are several faiths that believe in a "higher power" or "higher spirit", and while they may not all use the term God/Lord, etc., the sentiment is sometimes similar.

Having a pony that says this mild prayer, does not push a particular faith or religion on anyone. Truly, it would be that person or parent's decision to purchase any toy, including this one.

And given the times we live in, where stores cannot hang signs that read "Merry Christmas" on Christmas Eve Day, for fear of offending anyone, I reiterate that I find it refreshing to hear this lovely child's prayer in a product from today. It simply warms my heart.

I'm sure this topic will be locked momentarily as it is a rehash of previously discussed information.

I do, however, forever wish that people would refrain from posting inflammatory topics they know are going to cause problems, especially on purpose.

Personally, I'm Agnostic. I was raised Agnostic. My fiancee is Agnostic and we plan to raise our children that way. I don't plan on forming an opinion on 'higher beings' until I have more concrete evidence. Ok, now that that is out of the way...

Hasbro is a cash-craving monster who wants to amek as much moey as they possibly can, in a way the antithesis of religion - all they are thinking is gimmie gimmie gimmie the $$$$$ :lol: By introducing that one religious pony, they might up their consumer base because that little girl, after getting her praying pony, will want more. The rest of them have no religious connotations, but said little girl will vry, throw tantrums and beg to get another pony. This is actually a smart move by Hasbro.

I will never buy her for me, but I did purchase her for a very good Christian friend's daughter, and now that friend is buying more ponies for her little girl.

OK, I am a non-practicing christian, and I like the pony, but I can't see hasbro's reasoning behind it. While the prayer isn't shouting christianity, it is a variation of what is widely recognised, or thought to be, to be a christian prayer. Some people will see this as 'MLP is a christian brand' and stop buying it. Notice I say 'some people', not all, I don't think it means that at all, and by the reactions I have seen here, neither do other people.I do think it was a mistake on Hasbros behalf to make her say a recognisable prayer, perhaps a brand new prayer made up spacially for the pony would have been better. I think this thread (and its predecessor) go to show it was a bad idea. But I will say again I do like her, and if I could I would buy her (dans silly country I live in, crappy shops and not getting the good ponies!!)

'MLP is a christian brand'

so because Hasbro released ONE pony out of the 200 hundred or so ponies they released in the g3 line that says a very mild prayer MLP became a "christian" brand???????? I don't see how people would stop buying MLP products. People buy my little pony because they like litte ponies, lolz, not because it "was" a secular non-christian brand. It's still is a secular brand. Like many people have said before if you don't like the prayer, then don't buy the pony or take out the battery, lolz. It's the same reason why some people don't buy a certain pony color, hasbro wants to give us a variety to choose from. Variety is good, it's what keep businesses going and it's the only way to get a big market.

Oh and I think Hasbro did the prayer as secular as they can put it. I think it was actually creative that they were able to pull it off without making it sound too "christian" for some people.

I'm Catholic, but I agree that pony prayers may be taking it over the top. Prayer is a positive thing, but I don't think it's fair to have just one religion in the pony's vocabulary...

You know that made me think of that Baby Born doll. After a while they made a black Baby Born doll as well and the only reason I can see for that is to reach out to even more people as a company.
I mean - for little black girls it's gotta be wierd pretending your white doll is your baby =/

I can totaly see that they did this to reach out to even more people - in this case christians.

But common allready people! It's one pony saying one prayer. Big deal :roll:
I said it beafore and I say it again - I'm an atheist but I thought that prayr was sweet. And it wont turn me in to a die hard christian now. I can still like a prayer and be an atheist. It's not gonna change my beliefs. It's just stupid if you are that easily influenced from what one lousy toy say :roll:

It's a small mild prayer. it's not even saying i believe in God etc etc. the pony just prays for protection, that's all. Here it is again:

Now I lay me down to sleep;
I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
May angels watch me through the night;
Until I rise at morning light!

What's so bad in hoping/praying to get protected as one sleeps?

And isn't good for a child to believe in (i don't necessarily mean God) something? For example believing you can pass a test or believing you can achieve your goal is a good thing. And to me this is what this pony teaches, not necessarily God, but believing and hoping and dreaming to reach a goal or get a present or whatever. It helps with one's self-esteem and motivates them to reach what ever they desire.

anyway i hope i didn't sound like i'm preaching, lolz, i myself is not a religious christian, lolz. i just got offended by what starflower's posted but i understand where you and most people are coming from though. i just wanted to debate, lolz.

:D

PEACE (not a christian peace i meant "take care", lolz)
