hello, looking for some advice.
In a reply to another post of mine someone mentioned that older ponies might not be safe for kids. This was rather sad for me because I had been looking forward to giving my much loved childhood collection to my kids.
Does anyone know for sure how harmful they may be? I know there is a risk from choking from small accessories, but aside from that how dangerous are the chemicals in the ponies during normal play?
Obviously many of the people here grew up with them and we're still here, but as plastic ages it may leech more bad stuff.
Does anyone know if any G1 ponies had lead on them ?
Google seemed to give mixed results for me, some people saying 'Oh they're fine don't worry" and others acting as if vintage toys were nuclear waste! :surprisepony:
Would love to get a reasonable assessment of just what is in them and how safe or not safe they likely are.
Thank you!

I would wager that vintage ponies made for the American or European markets are not likely to contain lead, so those should be the safest. My biggest concern would be mold, obviously. If the pony is mold free, I think it's a-ok for play. Though, in my opinion, I wouldn't give a pony to a child younger than three or four, just to be sure they're past the oral fixation stage and because I think they'd appreciate ponies more at that age. Hope this helps!

I would definitely give them to children old enough not to eat or chew on the ponies. I'd feel that playing with them in the water wouldn't be good, either, especially if there's any mold lingering around.

I only have one G1 pony from my original collection and I have let my daughter play with her briefly a few times but she always gets put away and I have instructed her never NEVER NEVER write on the pony! (She loves markers. Nuff said.)

She's five though, and not inclined to licking or chewing on the pony. I wouldn't share an older toy with a toddler at all.

Every pony what comes to me gets cleaned and/or properly rehaired. When they land on my shelf they are mold free and clean and they don't shed.
My 5year old takes one of my ponies once in a while and plays. She always puts them back and knows exactly how to treat them.
I mean, that's what they were intended for. Ponies are Toys in the first place.
The rest of my family doesn't care about ponies, so it is just nice to have a little person who knows the name of a pony and tells me how beautiful my new purchase is, right?

I would pose the question of, are your children safe to play with your G1 ponies :winkpony: I probably only think this way cause I don't have kids but have a room full of G1 ponies LOL. I'm sure they're fine though, unless your considering giving them rare foreign ponies in which case no, they are absolutely not safe and you should totally send them to me for proper care and disposal....:satisfied:

Haha.
Well I'm not too too worried about them damaging them since my originals mostly got badly water damaged/mouldy/filthy (long story, a lot of snow and flooding) and even with extensive cleaning most are still not in the greatest shape alas (a few came out largely unharmed !).
I am not gonna let the kids play with some of the more delicate/uncommon ones until they are a bit older though.
The main concern really is the plastic stuff - I know that some toys of that era had various chemicals that they don't use any more because of safety concerns. I wasn't sure if older ponies were among them.

Although now the kids have a big bundle g3s and 3.5s and 4s of their own it might keep 'em off the g1s.

Well... I'm still alive and I played with all sorts of toys in the 80s. Are children more fragile now?

yeah I grew up with them too and I'm still here- it's just one of those things that you read and start getting paranoid.
They seem to think *everything* gives kids ADHD or Autism etc etc these days.

I just had to giggle 'cause that's why I was thinking. :smilepony:

Well, I played with G1 ponies my whole childhood, and I turned out just fine. lol. I don't think you have to worry about it too much, unless the kids has like PICA or something.

***edit to laugh because I just read the posts above mine lol***

Yeah I think the BPA is your only real issue with a thoroughly cleaned pony. Or if it starts leaking plasticiser, so no sticky ponies, and no ponies in mouths, and they should be fine! If not cleaned properly there's rust and mould to worry about, which is troublesome - but another reason to spend time cleaning, so hurrah!

Lead isn't a worry in MLP, they only used it in red paint before the release of G1, so tell everyone you know - it's the number one reason people throw out old MLP!

I think they're just fine. We turned out fine!!

The only danger is if they ingest them, which is not recommended for any toy. BPA is linked with drink containers mostly and studies are inconclusive in toys from my readings.

I have thought of this and often wondered the same thing. But look at it this way, a whole bunch of us played with them and we all turned out fine! I plan on giving all my toys to my kids (if and when that ever happens, lol) the only issue is that they might develop an unhealthy pony obsession :p

I'm one of the younger collectors here, and I've have my g1s a while. I play with them ^-^, and sometimes I let my younger sister too. Neither of us has come to any harm, and I doubt we will. They should be fine as long as they don't have Mold, cancer or something like that. As long as the child is careful it should be fine.
