argh, this is so frustrating... i've figured out how to draw ponies, and i'm OK with drawing people, but i CANNOT figure out how to do anthros!! i can't seem to sort out which parts should be pony and which should be horse, and how the proportions should go... my last attempt came out with a massive head and, like, no torso. T__T does anyone have any pointers?

Hey there.
I have a suggestion that I Think is or can be much better than a general tutorial.

One of the best ways to learn about and center out your own problems in anotmy is to hand over a sketch to someone who has an easier time with it. They then draw corrections over it (in a different color. You can then compare and see just what it is your doing worng.

I'd be happy to do that for if you like the sound of the idea.

Yeah, proportions are a killer :p You might want to check over on yerf.com, they have a forum specifically for critiques, and they also suggest a several books that have helped their members.

For those who aren't familiar, Yerf is an online art gallery for anthropomorphic artwork, and the quality there is extremely high, some of those people make a living with their art. There's a lot of good advice to be had there! :)

Hey! I think i'll check that myself. Thanks wingedcheetah.
"Anatomy for the artist" is good. GREAT pictures and it even takes master paintgs of old and picts them apart to show what the MASTERS did wrong and how it would truley go in life.
And A FANTASIC BOOK for facial expressions is "facial expressions" by: mark simon.
Ofcourse the is the classic, that I think is in just about everyartists collection "Dynamic anatomy".

I can't even draw stick figures, but that website is awsome, even if just for drooling about the artwork. Thanks for the link :)

Yerf.com is awesome.

I think the thing with anthros is that they're so diverse. You get anthros which are JUST an animal head on a perfectly human-shaped body, like the way the Egyptian gods are depicted - they're most common:

Or those that have horse-shaped legs and longer arms... it's really up to you to decide how far you want to go with the anthropomorphism...

*runs upstairs, rips down all pieces of self drawn art, and chucks them in the bin*

Woah. Just woah. Nice work!! Ah well, might as well quit now, I'll never be that good!!

*cries softly in the corner*

well, i can do okay with what is basically a human with horse ears, tail and feet, like poniesyeah does, it was the full pony head with a human body that was i was having the hardest time with. horse necks and human necks are so different in size and shape i couldn't get them to mesh right. but i hate to just rip off poniesyeah's style, so i'll have to keep tinkering. thanks for the suggestions, y'all! ^__^

i have a really hard time drawing people so my anthros always look wonky

Here is one I did awhile back.. You really just make the neck longer than a human's. the legs are not done well here...but give you an idea that the hock starts at the heel and then then the toes bend down into a hoof.

just be careful posting people's pics and be sure to credit. I know Goldenwolf has had a lot of problems in the past with art thieves, so jsut a heads up, those little buggers are everywhere!

It is hard to mix the two. I've been working on my anthropomorphism for a while.

It also depends on your taste and the style of anthro you want to go with. Kyoht is a FANTASTIC example of mostly animal anthro's *devstalks Kyoht on DA X3*.

Then there's also styles like Klar's, or Jax, or Erin Middendorf, Redderz, Skifi *heheh, love that bull boy, he's a sweetie X3*, or Tsuno *or myself ( hides )*.

Study both human anatomy and the animal anatomy as best you can, and like poniesyeah said, get the second opinion of someone else whom is good at anthro art. Heck, use it for any art genre ^_^. A good honest "red penning" can be EXTREMELEY helpful!

I wish someone could red pen all my work.....

Why not just ask?
I'd be happy to help anyhone. Just post the picture ypou want help with and I'll red pen it for you and re post it.

Yeah Dark Natasha's amazing. So is Sandra SanTara http://windwolf.com/
And to plug my bf's parents.. http://www.peppermill-studios.com Not anthropomorphic, but Chris is amazing!

Also, I wouldn't mind redlining or helping with any questions either. :)

EDIT:

And what's with all this "I'll never be that good" business I'm reading?! Don't let me catch you typing that again! No one starts out "good", it takes years of practice. I know it's easy to get discouraged at the beginning, but it's really not fair to compare yourself to someone who's been arting for 30 years. Chins up girls! We're all great artists :D

Ya, I've been an anthro artist for YEARS and it can be hard still. Good practice is definatly need and a study of human anatomy helps a heck of alot. I found that once I started paying attention to humans, my anthros got alot better.

As for the MLP anthro thing, as I am guessing you are doing, there are various ways to go about it. You can do a more human face which is easier for people most times and smaller feet. Personally, I draw MLP horseish heads with a stylized bodies and feet that are comparable to real MLPs. But both ways are extremely awesome. I'm just not good with human faces. :D
