Where to get hair? and what kind of paints do you use?

I need a source for hair for customs. I've been using barbie doll hair but my thrift shop raised the price on their barbies. I'm hoping for bulk packages not just enough in one pack for one pony. I tried ebay but all my searches pulled up was hair nets and wool "dolls" hair. Help is greatly appreciated.

I'd also love to hear what kinds of paints you use. I have been using Apple Barrel Acrylics.

:confused::confused::confused::please:

Thank you!!!!!!

Look in the tutorials section here, there is a link to a place lots of people use for pony hair, as well as info about painting. :)

Far as buying hair, more info here:

My Little Pony Trading Post - FAQ: 5.0 - Restoring and customizing ~ How do I ...

Doll Hair - DOLLYHAIR.COM is the most used USA hair supplier, though I believe there are currently delays.

For purchasing hair, my recommendation goes to Piper ( a member here) Although she is located in the UK, her service is excellent and shipping speedy. my little pony custom, dolls, saran, nylon hair, fairy wings stockists, blythe, eye chips, Sindy, angelina, dolly hair, reroot, supplies
Piper also sells lots of other various supplies......

Far as buying paints, apple barrel is commonly used, here is some further info on paint from Aera Cura:

Customising - What type of Paint should I use?

Ok so I stick with the Apple Barrel paints and the "other toys" recycled hair. No way I'm buying hair for that much and selling for what I have been. OUCH!

Most of us do order our hair from Dollyhair. She has a very wide selection of colors. The two most popular types are saran and nylon, but she also stocks several other types.

For nylon, there's also CustomPony, but expect to wait awhile for your order. She's a notoriously slow shipper.

In the UK, piper is your go-to girl for everything from hair to custom-made fairy wings and supplies.

You can also find saran hair at RestoreDoll. I hear she's a quick shipper, but I don't know from personal experience.

If you're looking for tinsel, Jo Ann Fabrics & Crafts stocks various colors of Sulky Holoshimmer Thread that is very, very similar to MLP tinsel. You can also order several different colors here.

For paint, I prefer Apple Barrel. It's cheap, easy to use, and comes in a variety of colors. Delta CeramCoat and Folk Art are also popular, cheaper brands. Keep in mind that these do need to be watered down; otherwise, they apply too thick and globby.

Others also use Testors or Games Workshop paints, but they're more expensive.

[ADDING: You can also change body and/or hair color with RIT dye. The powder gives a quicker, more vibrant dye than the liquid.

For sealers, Mod Podge Matte and Delta CeramCoat Matte seem to be the most common. Mod Podge Gloss for eyes - to give them that realistic look. There are many brands of sealer out there, though, and everyone uses something different.]

We have a lot of awesome tutorials and many customizing tips in our FAQ. There is also a wealth of experienced customizers here who are happy to help with any other questions. I hope that I've helped answer your questions.

well back when the $tree had those dress up hair headbands i got a whole lot of them because they'll do 2 and a half ponys. the hair's a bit plasticy but it works well. i also get HUGE jumbo black braids from another $store in my area; i've yet to use the first one and i use black ALOT. I'm guestimating like 7-8 ponys from just one at the very least, if not more.

for other colors though I use dolly hair; i can get about a pony and a half from one skein (just that one color) and i make them last as looong as i can since they cost so much.

you ever think of useing yarn/string? you can do some neat stuff with that stuff XP

as for paint i'm an Apple Barrel person too cause it's cheapest. though i'm in love with the FolkArt black metallic; i got half a thing of it in a lot and i love it! so much easier to use than glossy AB; it's more satin than gloss, which i like to do eye lining with. it's regularly $2 @ Micheals, but i might just have to get more of it. I also buy any paint that goes on sale too, so i got some Color Traditions and they work very good too. Craft Smart is EVILE!! it's like 95% water and i hate it; i only use the white i have to matte-ify (is that a word?) my AB glosses if i need a pastel of that color; it works well though.

Unlike what skig said though, I don't water down my paints; i've never really had any problems with it being too thick. though others will tell you to always water them down, so it's really your call from your own experiance.

can't help you with a sealer cause i don't use it

so any of that help you?

Can I second this? This was the only brand that carried the color that I need without mixing, and I'm having an awful time with it in my airbrush.

LOL Gonna have to disagree with you here, skig - this stuff is excellent! I use a make-up sponge and not an airbrush, but this brand gives me the smoothest, silkiest finish I've ever gotten out of cheap paints. And they have every color I could ever ask for! And they're only $.50! You'll see what I mean when I post teaser pics for your custom swap. ;)

Are you trying to do a full-body repaint, skig, or a gradient? And, what color was it? Maybe it's just the color itself? Maybe it's made differently or something.

I'm considering using some wool I just got and trying it on a baity fakie I just got if it works I'll try it on a real MLP. I also got some original white sculpy. I'm going to use it to make a headless pony custom muhuahuahua! (think evil laugh) :catdevious:

Yes that does help. I have not used a sealant before but may look into it. I heard elsewhere about using auto paints. I might try some of those!

Wish me luck!

well i supose spongeing might do it. and darker paints; maybe the dark pigments hpold it together better. al i know is i used the white for a full bodied repaint and i nearly torched the thing three times because i got so fed up with it's chalkyness >> and no it was not "smooth" or "silky"...evil paint

I've never used the white for a full repaint, but it works for smaller things alright. I may have to experiment. But yes, the darker paints are great. They're not prone to streaking either so it's great for in between their legs where I can't get a sponge.

the JaAnn's brand doesn't either. so i think i'll j ust stick to that and the AB. CraftSmart just turned me off *glares at the pony it was used on* another reason why iu don't water down my paints either ^^;

Water down? What's this you speak of? :) You don't have to water anything down if you sponge it on!

I've only heard of watering down paints here. I got some sculpt original hehehe. I just cooked an octo pony lol! 8 legs and everything. I am doing a headless pony or maybe going to sculty a head and tail for a dragon not sure yet so I HAD to do SOMETHING with the head right???

That is the coolest thing ever! I wanna see this finished!

Neat-looking custom! I can't wait to see it finished!

The Craft Smart paint that I bought is a mint green color. I'm using it for a full body repaint. It could just be the color, I suppose. I'll probably stick with Apple Barrel, for the most part, though. I can get basic colors at Walmart for $.40.

lol I was saying in the chat last week that someone should make one of those. Glad to see you do it! Can't wait to see when it's done.
