What version of Posey is this?

Just in case anyone gets squeamish using pictures from the auction ^
We have permission from the owner.

I've had so many ponies with head/body mismatches, that I wouldn't be surprised if this pony had that issue and that her body was going through PVC leakage/mold issues or plastic aging issues that her head just wasn't experiencing at the same rate or even differently.
Do you think her symbols would look like that if she’s experiencing that issue? I think that’s what’s throwing me with this pony.

there are more pictures but it's a live auction listing so the link can't be posted. the description only says she "looks like Posey" but the seller doesn't know what pony she is and she "looks discolored" and those are the only things of note.

i'm also..not sure if that's sherbet's head? the colors are all correct, but the sundae best ponies used slightly resculpted old poses didn't they? it just looks off to me.
I have heard this about Sherbet's head. I don't have a Sherbet handy to check it out myself. I never really noticed a difference but I wasn't looking for one either.

i had an idle thought which turned into a bit of a rabbit hole. bear with me here.

the seller is from connecticut, only an hour and a half from hasbro HQ. now i recall at the 2011 MLP fair, which was hosted there, some employees mentioned them having stuff in archives– but i didn't want to base any theories off of something 13 year old me might've misheard and what might have been a rumor from whoever was working there at the time. it would make sense for them to have archives, but i wanted to confirm it.

a couple searches later and i ran across some photos from the 90s on pinterest of a bunch of old GI joes stacked up in the basement of hasbro's warehouse, a stones throw away in central falls. dug further and found a 2015 article that confirmed the warehouse stored a bunch of old hasbro toys; albeit not in any kind of professional archival manner. from the article:

It wasn’t run like an actual archive and didn’t appear to be kept track of. At the time, my wife was Malcolm Forbes’ personal archivist, so she knew what it SHOULD have looked like. We were both pretty surprised at how incomplete and disorganized it seemed to be.

also of note:

My current vice president for the corporation I work for used to be a V.P. at Hasbro from about 2009-2012. When I told her I was a G.I.Joe collector, she said, ‘Well, you know near Hasbro’s headquarters in Pawtucket there are warehouses where they store three examples of every toy Hasbro has ever made!’ She had visited them a few times and said up until about 2010, a couple of the older warehouse areas weren’t even climate-controlled (no air conditioning) and that this was one thing she pushed to have corrected.

a disorganized warehouse would make it easy for things to go missing and no climate control could be responsible for discoloration.

this is banking on her being a real prototype, mind, but it could be a possibility of some old hasbro employee taking her out of the archives. even if you don't think she's real (i'm not 100% sold myself until we see the inside of her), the article is worth a look if you're into toy preservation stuff.

:shock:So, there is a possibility she’s a real prototype then…. wow! The seller is thinking that’s what she is too.

That bid ends today: really curious to see how it turns out! I’ll be sad if the winner isn’t someone on this forum and if this mystery reaches a dead end >m<

Me too.
I finally managed to find her to see the rest of the photos now

Since we have permission from the owner to post the pictures, here’s the other pictures for those who want to see as well:

That hair must have been in that head long enough to stain if it is from the hair

i've been planning on bidding on her but i keep seeing the number of watchers tick higher every hour >_>
She’s staying at the same price for now but I suspect a bid war at the end. …I keep telling myself that I have bills to pay…

If one of us from the tp gets her then I’ll be just as happy as if I got her myself - I want to solve the mystery.

She’s starting to rise in price everyone - I bid a couple hours ago and put my max $60 but we’re past that now. She’s going to go for a good amount - please guys, get this pony if you can

:rainbow1: :twohearts: :rainbow2:

In the second pic the tail looks dyed to me..... is that what you mean?

I think we all want this to be true. The location is a pretty big factor

From my understanding though, most prototypes are made of a hard resin.. except for a few BBEs, etc. If this were one I would expect the symbols to be handpainted at a minimum. I really want to bid and win so I can pop that head off and end this mystery! LOL I'm just afraid of spending too much on a custom. It's not a chance I want to take right now.

The stain I was referring to was the one above the eye in the second picture

If the new owner isn’t a member/active on here I sure hope they’re someone who is around somewhere in the community and someone knows them to tell us the result! Maybe someone on the Arena, Tumblr, Insta or Facebook group? I am not on any of those but I just want us to be able to hear about it

i've heard of some oddballs like a red haired tootsie and collectors pose sundance, so it may also just be she's a weird one off too. i just like to speculate for fun!

i have a cap on what i'm going to max bid due to healthcare expenses so anything above that i have to tap out. whether she's a real oddball or not, i'm kind of invested in this already so i wouldn't be disappointed if she turns out to be a custom lol

Ah! Yes! Pre-production ponies. Sorry, I forgot about those. I just came back to collecting after a long pause

well i watched her price jump nearly $100 in 2 seconds, so she got away from me. hope to see her again someday, lol
