What/how do you collect?

G1, I collect the first few years by set. Of most of those, I have ponies left from childhood and I try to complete those sets (such as the Rainbows, Uni/Pegs, Twinkle Eyes and so on). I'm actually pretty close to completing my G1 wishlist!

With G3 I just get whatever I like. Many have great colour schemes and I just love it. I love buying ponies in the store and being able to open their boxes and comb their hair for the first time, it takes me back!
Atm I am very much into the exclusives, I love those Art Ponies and such :)

In a perfect world, I would like to have at lease one of every pony made. I know that in really, this goal is not very likely. I have a wish list of the most wanted, and I try to work from that. Although I am still sort of new to G3's so I tend to buy ones that aren't on my list. lol I'm not sure if I have a realistic goal for my collection. I think it changes all the time. It was to have all the G1 adult ponies, but then I have gotten into the babies more and now I want all of them too. I wanted all the G3's, but I know that means all the core 7's and other pose variations. Now I don't think I want all of them, but I'm sure I'll change my mind again soon enough. lol

I do know that I want a hefty Bluebelle army. I would like to get one from every country, a MOC one and the elusive White Bluebelle. Also, I would like to have a custom of her as a G2, G3, baby, TAF, brother and SO Soft if possible. Perhaps a flutter too. lol

I collect what ponies I like, which are almost all G1, G2, and G3 2003-2007, not counting ponyville/chibis. When I get one pose, other poses of the same pony become a lower priority, but I want ALL Mintys of every sort! Some times people give me ponies that I never wanted, such as 2008+ ponies, but I love them any way. I don't keep any ponies on card. All my ponies are free, and every one of them gets hands-on love and attention :) I do tend to spend more time with my G3s, but only because I tend to pick up and play with ponies that I see other people teasing. Pinkie Pie gets a lot of love from me, for example, even though she isn't one of my focusses. Lots of people say they want to stab her or cut her up, so that makes me love her even more. Those kinds of people have almost got me talked into collecting coathanger ponies (2008+), lol! There are certain ponies that I want particularly, of course (Tira-Mi-Su and Mochanut, Whistle Wishes, Flower Wishes :) , then there's Nightglider, Minty, Minty, Minty, Minty, Minty, and a few random G1s I haven't been able to afford yet in the condition I want them in. And every one of them will all be kept free! They would suffocate in their packages!) Okay, I've rambled enough :)
 
I want to complete my U.S. G1 and G3 and U.K. ponies. I was close and then sold many because I switched over to collecting only nm-m ponies with accessories. It is taking a long time...I am close to finishing all the U.K. ones and I have a huge portion of the U.S.

I am also working on completing my Brazilian and Dutch ponies so that is a simultaneous goal for me.
other then that I collect Nirvana ponies that I love which usually is Greek and Argies but also include Spanish, French, Mexican and Peruvian as well. I have a baby pony obsession so they rope me in :)

I do kind of like G2 babies and any of the princess/royal looking G2s. I don't have any but I am wearing down ;)
 
I'm collecting mostly G1's. Right now I'm working on my MLP Friends collection. I have all of them loose except Edgar (elephant) and Cha Cha (llama). Not only do I want them loose, but also on card. Right now, I think I only currently have 3 on card - Zig Zag, Creamsicle and Spunky.

I am really into items on the card, though I'll take any G1 I can get. I've got a Sugarberry on card that I love - mainly because she's one of the ones I remember playing with SO often when I was a kid. I have an Italian Starsong on card. I probably have a few more, but don't remember what. I know a lot of people aren't big MLP collectors on card, or so it seems that there aren't as many as there are for other collections such as MOTU. My husband really got me into the collecting on card aspect of things.

And I'll definitely take any Medley I find. She's my absolute favorite.

I used to strictly focus on G1, but I did buy some G2's and G3's when they came out. Recently however my obsession has grown that I'm not getting my fix quickly enough with buying G1's off ebay or wherever, so I'm back to getting G3's from the store.
 
I just get the ones I like (which is most of them!) and I have all three gens. I don't really go about collecting them in any sort of organized way, usually I just get whatever strikes me at the time.
 
I collect all generations except the newest one, I just want to have the ponies I really love
The ponies must be in color combinations/poses that I love
I want my ponies to be in different poses, so I don't buy 2 ponies that have the same pose
I think it's like picking flowers from a field, you don't pick everything, just the flowers you like
I think the ponies I choose reflect my personality in a way
 
I collect every Gen. I also collect any pony I can get my hands on. I usually only shop for ponies at flea markets and thrift shops so if I see one I grab it. I do have an affinity for celestial, beachy, and G2 ponies.

I collect what I like loose ponies. Only G1 and G3 for me. I still have 4 more g3s to go and only what I can afford. My g1s are closest to my heart and I've managed to snag a nice handful already I think the hardest ones I'm gonna try n find are a reasonably priced big brother and childhood dazzle glow. I love unicorns and twinkle eyes the best
 
I collect stuff that looks cool. My boyfriend would never let me own all of them, so I have to pick and choose lol.
 
I only collect G1s and G4s at the moment, but will eventually expand to G2s. I prefer to collect loose, but for G4s I do have a few mint in box. I like to collect ponies based on colour and pose, as well as theme (TAF and TE especially). I try to get my favourite ones first (unless I buy a lot together, then I end up with ones I'd never planned on). If I have or want more than one pony in a set, then often I feel compelled to get the full set eventually. I also try to keep the colours in my collection balanced and not have too many of one. I want to try and get back most of the ponies I had as a child, but I had a lot of Euros, so that is proving quite difficult. For G4s, I try to have one of every character, but if two pony designs look too much like each other then I usually only get the one that I like more.

I´ve tried to think it through lately since I have started my G1 collection quite recently, and wanted to make sure it is under control and not just wasted space and money. As much joy as possible for the money! ;)
I will try to actively have "projects" going for the ponies I have- improved ways to display them, plan photoshoots/costumes, restore playsets and probably ponies aswell in the future. But as a non-pressure, non-stressful hobby. It is there when I have the time and feel like it! An attempt to place more focus on enjoying the ponies I have rather than obsessing over finding new ones!
Have been drooling over a cabinet for display, but it will be a longterm project. It cost about 500 Euro. Would have to save up for a long time or win the lottery or something! ;) I feel it is important that it already is a part of my goal however - to keep in mind that it is just as important to be able to store and display the lovely collection than just getting stuff to fill it with.

I do not buy new playsets (only if I need spare parts that are very hard to find, and then it is with the intention of reselling what I do not need). But to complete and restore the ones I have. I would want a maximum of 3-4 playsets.
Also love accessories but I do not want anything and everything. Just the stuff I like best. A big part of planning what ponies to get are based on what accessories they have! *lol*
The only set (so far) I intend to complete is the Baby Seaside Ponies. It´s only three ponies and one float each, I think the colours looks very pretty together!
I love the ponies in baby blossom-pose so I will probably end up with a lot of those, but I am aiming for variety and not several with similar "look" and colours. Plan is to have a maximum of 10-12 of them picked from the favourites but with as much variety as possible!
I like to have 1-3 ponies from each set, but not from all sets, just the favourites. Most choises are based on my own childhood-ponies (the favourites) and suitable "friends". That is more than enough for now. :)

This. The spouse would murder me if I bought everything I wanted. I have major budget constraints. Running the sanctuary is expensive, so I have to choose: feed or fun. I pick feed because it leads to its own special kinda fun. Just not the joyful plastic kind I so enjoy.
 
And I'm certain that all the furries, feathers, (and scalies?) in your care thank you for it:) I think they are all smarter than we are and they are just pretending to not understand human things so we don't catch on to their plans...
