What does everyone think about the "Core 7"?

I'm sure this has been discussed here lots of times before, so, sorry in advance for duplicating.

I really am interested in what other collectors think about Hasbro's decision to do the Core 7 thing. For me, it feels sort of like a part of my childhood is going away, as part of the joy of collecting ponies, now and as a kid, was the drive to get that last different one. Once I've got one of each pony, I don't need 10 more of her! I don't quite understand what drove Hasbro to make this decision, as it seems to me that in the long run it's going to do more damage than good to their line...

The Care Bears have done the same thing, and in the process, both lines have eliminated well established characters that already sold well..

Am I the only one that thinks this way?

Again, sorry to bring up something that's obviously going to have been discussed before, but I really am curious...and far too tired to go through all the old threads just now (feel free to redirect me!)

i wont be buying any, i sold most of my g3's last yr.
g3's just arent fun to me anymore :(
but hey it saves me money to spend on g1's and g2's! :)

I really hate the Core 7 thing. I wasn't too fond of the re-releases they kept coming out with, but before at least you got new poses or a ton of extra accessories with the re-releases. Now it's the same pose, maybe one new accessory(but nothing good), and I'm already sick of it. I didn't even get excited when I bought the brand new(never released before) C7 ponies like Sweetie Belle. It's just so boring.

I'm also not happy that they carried this C7 thing into the Ponyville line. I thought at least there I'd have some variety.

I think it's a bad direction to take the line. Parents don't want to buy the same ponies over and over again. Kids don't want 5 of the same pony with slightly different symbols. What made MLP successful in the begining was that they were fairly cheap, and there were a lot of choices so you were encouraged to collect a huge herd of them. Even before the C7 thing I had at least 10 Pinkie Pies, why should I buy more just for a plastic hat? Even as an accessory collector, I have a hard time justifying spending $5 for a pony I already have just to get that single accessory.

I agree no G3s for me. As soon as they started doing that a few years ago I was turned off. I don't get excited about the same pony in a different pose. One pose of one pony is enough. It feels cheap and lacking imagination to me. I do still sometimes buy G3s when I see one that I really like, for example Pretty Pop.

Otherwise, BLAH I'm spending my money on G1 and G2s! Yes, that's right I like G2s especially the ones only sold in Europe!

How are the little collectors feeling about this Core 7 bull? Those of you with kids do they care/notice when they see the same pony in a different pose or do they like it?

I'm really getting tired of it even though I love and collect everything of rainbow dash.

YAWN! Though I still will collect any G3 Rainbow Dash they put out. I hope they don't get rid of the winters though, but they need to not recycle the names and styles!

Well, I'm not a fan of the same 7 ponies being re-released. It will probably kill the line in the end. However, I only started recently collecting G3's, so I am still finding many that I do not have. Ebay is full of them, and I can buy in lots because I don't have any of them. :) I'm wondering if this change to the core 7 is going to increase the value of the ponies that aren't part of the core 7. I guess only time will tell on that one. If this does kill off the line, I hope we don't have to wait too long for G4's to come out. lol

So THAT'S why Target never has good ponies. XD I only just recently started collecting again, I was wondering what was going on.

Man, that really sucks. What kind of idiot marketing move is that? XD

I think it's stupid as well. I don't need a bazillion different Starsongs or Pinkie Pies. I just hope the line lasts through the year and Hasbros sees how stupid this idea is and brings back the old ways. But I doubt that will happen. I think the line is dead.

No matter how Hasbro tried/tries to justify it, it just doesn't make sense for what MLP should be about. I can definitely understand re-releasing important characters every once in a while for those little girls who just started getting into them and want a Pinkie Pie, but having only the choice of 1 out of 7 in stores at all times is a bad move, when the same 7 will be there year-round. If they had extremely cute clothing and maybe new friends released amidst them, that would be a-ok with me.

They aren't fashion dolls, so they won't work that way. I really never get tired about complaining about the Core 7. It's been going on full strength since... let's see... the last new ponies released were Chocolate Chipper and Soda float, right? So that was in October or so? The toy fair for '08 only showed Core 7 ponies, so we have no real hopes for this ending any time soon.

Does anyone know if there is a way to research how well a toy line is doing? Is there some website that reports sales for a company and divides it up by lines? That may be extremely helpful in predicting if the line will end, or if they'll start to change their minds.

What I'm really waiting on is this year's pony fair. Hasbro will be involved, and I think that it's possible they will have some news for us about the line, considering they told us about Core 7 at last year's fair long before it even started, although there was also a press release or something on the mlp website before the fair.

I just hope it doesn't continue. The only good thing about it is that it's saving me tons of money. But I almost would rather it not, because the excitement it produces is well worth the $5-$15 I spent when a new wave was released. Or the $11 spent when a new movie came out.

But I will say here that one of the most depressing parts about the C7 is the single pose, a pose I don't even like. I think they could get me to buy the ponies if they at least came in a variety of poses. And they aren't even doing anything as exciting as collectors first thought when the C7 news hit us. We thought maybe we'd see baby Rainbow Dash, Twice as Fancy Pinkie Pie, and So Soft Sweetie Belle. But not, just boring stuff, although the Design a Pony contest rocks, and some of the ponies showed from the toy fair look cool. They aren't what we expected.

Another thing that really gets my goat about the C7 is the 7 characters they chose. Why Scootaloo? She's some random pony that I don't think many people really cared about- she never had a SINGLE line in any cartoon. And why introduce 2 new ponies if the whole point of the C7 line is to get kids to know the ponies? We already had 2 terrific candidates for a peg and a uni- Star Catcher and Rarity, respectively. They had terrific personalities, and already starred in their own films.

Just GRR. GRR!

Hm I think I'm a newbie about this C7 stuff. It is annoying to see the same pony in the same pose in a different package and want to get the set or whatever.. Sometimes it has been slightly good, like the Valentines Sweetie Belle with silver symbols and gradient on her leg. I actually haven't bought a regular Sweetie Belle.
Maybe they are running out of ideas. I wonder if we'll see new ponies out of that contest? I know barbie company did a little of that. A lot of girls sent in mermaid and fairy suggestions.. >.<;

Anyways if I don't sound as educated on the matter, I apologize. I just thought it was a bit interesting. o.o

I read somewhere that the Core 7 thing wasn't supposed to "officially" start until Fall 2008...so there should still be some non-core 7 G3s in stores. Is that right? Or did I read the source wrong?

I hate it. Toys 'r'us used to be fun, same with any toy department, now I'm forced to go to Ebay for variety.
