Thats so lovely! Im so glad it has such a special place in your family. Those are the best kind of books/movies. E has a great mom!!Bilbo Baggins and gollum. My mother read the hobbit to me/us four times growing up (once in utero) and I have read it at least 4 on my own, plus twice to E. I think they are my favorite simply because I can hear my mom’s voice for each character in my mind. (Even watching the movie I substituted her voice.)
(Speaking of movies, how about the enormous part of leaving the shire that was left out of the film! It’s one of my favorite parts!)
Neither of my parents were into Tolkien before I was. (I hope its okay with the mods if I explain how i came to read the books? ) My first exposure to it was the Ralph Bakshi animated LOTR. My dad bought me the VHS and the ring wraiths scared me so bad haha its the sounds they made. Then later the LOTR Peter Jackson movies came out but I didnt have glasses. I remember the movies being played on my Dad's girlfriend's tv when they came out for rent but I couldnt see the tv from the couch so i looked at the carpet and daydreamed. The only part I recognized from the cartoon was Caradhras bc all the white snow I could actually see. (No one knew I couldnt see, and I thought everyone saw the same as me lol). Fast forward to highschool I met a friend who liked Tolkien so i finally properly watched the movies and I was hooked!! I asked my mom for the books and I LOVED them. My life has been consumed with tolkien ever since! My dad has never gotten into it, but like you and E, my mom and I are very close. Now she enjoys Tolkien because I do and she always quotes the movies and books with me on the daily haha. Im so happy with my little shelf of tolkien books and my wooden box of tolkien keepsakes.
I totally agree!! I understand why they left it out for time but I really wish they had left it in. At least they did briefly reference meeting the elves while they traveled in the extended editions. That was my favorite part in the first book! I need to reread them sometime.
Oooo I have heard of Red, White, and Royal Blue!! my Bestie read it and I totally forgot! Ive got to put it on my list! Im definitely okay with low angst haha not everything needs to be angsty! If you like the Genre then maybe Captive Prince is for you too! I do believe its a small series of books, but from what Ive heard it sounds so good!! Definitely for adults tho!Ok first off, how did it take us so long to broach this topic? It’s a genius move!
@Tak “The Outsiders” is ok?! No no no! It’s the first book that broke my heart! It was the first book I threw against a wall! (It was an instinct, I’m sorry! I’d never purposely harm a book that way!) Anyway, it holds a special place in my heart and the movie makes me cry. Every. Single. Time.
@strawberrypony32 Ooh, “Captive Prince” sounds like it’s right up my ally! Political, wartime, royalty, enemies to lovers, LGBT, the works! Also, a recommendation if you like LGBT royalty: “Red, White, and Royal Blue” is a fantastic story! Low angst so sorry if that’s your thing…
As far as physical vs digital, sorry, I'm gonna have to go with digital. Easier to carry, takes up less space, fewer things for my kitty to pull off the shelf! Lol. But also because I read daily but usually stick to fan fiction. I have trouble letting go of characters I’ve already fallen for…so I don’t!
I too read a lot of fanfiction haha so I totally get what you mean! The story must go on, gatta read more about your favorites!! I also enjoy writing fanfiction myself!
