Urgh, i hate people who over charge!

If someone decides to get nasty- I can deal with it, in the end walk away and leave them to tend to their full booth and no customers. Then only check said booth again for a slip say, mimic at $15. I worked retail in the past so have plenty of experience dealing with some not so friendly people! :)

I would find ponies in MD at flea markets. Usually dirty G3s that they are priced way to high. I love ponies, so I might offer to take them for a lower price. Usually I would be told no, so I would come back and month after month they would be sitting there unsold.

Also, at Canterlot Gardens this year, there was a guy (who I personally dislike just for the way he runs his handmades business, but that's another story) who was selling a ton of the G4 toys for disgusting prices. $40 Zecora, $15 sets of 3 minis (like the cloudsdale set), $10 wave 5 singles.

People bought them, too! It was so frustrating to watch him rake in money for them, since you could just drive down the street and get that stuff for half the price at the store. Ugh.

That's how much the mini sets & single brushables retail for in Australia :cry2: (I'm sure there are plenty of reasons like difference in wages, import, etc) But I do hate seeing things like that. Even happens at op shops (thrift stores) - I see things that are almost at retail price but second hand!!! And not even good second hand condition.

Also it's very true about being patient =\

This thread actually just reminded me. I wanted the Nightmare Moon figure that was out, but of course nobody would want to give those up. :( I looked online for offers and they're up to $50!!!

$50 for ONE figure who came in a pack of 7 for $45! Ridiculous. I ended up buying the set anyway. Not sure if I want to open it and sell the few I don't want, or keep it all nice and boxed up on display in case I sell it in the future.

I remember when the set hadn't come out yet, chinese eBay sellers had Nightmare Moon for $160. Just for ONE figure on buy it now. And you know how it tells you how many are available and how many sold?

They had already sold 21 of them.... :surprisepony:

That's... wow. I can't believe there are people out there who would buy a pony for that much.

Dang! at least you all are in places where they actually have flea markets and second hand stores!!! I live in a place where there is a salvation army but the only toys there are stuff toys, not even a **** barbie to be found!!!! I would love to share a story with you all, but I have only ever done my haggling on here! But I agree, you must have patience...I think all these 'Must Have' collectors are making prices skyrocket on ebay therefore causing all MLP items (Especially the G4's) to go waaay up!!! I almost hardly ever shop on ebay anymore....its just too insain for me!!! but ohhh am I green with envy at all of you who got them good stores!!!

I guess it does even out when you get nice cheap ponies. Ultimately it is us collectors who determine pricing, and like was said, it is the must have it now collectors that drive prices up! D:
On ebay, anyway. In person some people are just ridiculous!
Scalpers are especially annoying, like the people who bought SDCC Derpy for $25 (i believe thats what she was selling for) and put her on ebay for like $200!
Some people just charge such insane prices!

I know a toy dealer at our local markets, he's pretty nice, and charges $4 per pony. He's cool, and I usually don't haggle, simply cos I get a good mix of common and HTF stuff from him, and it balances out pretty well. If I found something rare from him, I'd give him a fair price, because he's always helped hubby out when he's tried to buy ponies for me!

On the other hand, there are some stallholders that are just thieves, and won't budge on their rediculous prices, and I walk in, look and walk out. I'd have no problem taking a mimic for $7 from them!

At my local flea market there is a lady who always has a lot of toys and she tries to sell her dirty, in bad shape G1's for too much money so I never buy them even though I'd like to fix them.

Aadra and I go to a flea market when the weather is nice, and have been going there since we first started collecting in the 90's. We can always count on one lady to have SOME sort of pony, and since we always buy them she always gives us a good price. It's normally G3's or McD ponies, but occasionally there's a G1, and once a Euro G2. Anyway, she knows we collect, and she's just awesome so she keeps her prices low, because she's guaranteed a sale that way. We've bought non-pony stuff from her too.

Other sellers there do NOT operate by her methods and we've walked away from countless other ponies.

Then again, most people out there charge like 50 cents for ponies of any generation (if you ever find any other than G3 anyway) and most of them don't know if a pony is rare or not. A lady once charged me $1 for a Dream Beauty, and another lady had a couple of mint wingers with their ribbons for $1 each also. I got a Chuck E. CHeese baby for a quarter last time we went. I should make a note that we find G1's about once a year so this is actually very uncommon.

Maybe that's just the nature of the type of flea market we visit though. It's not very nice and it's not in a good part of town and much of it is outdoors on the ground. I think most people might just be happy to be getting rid of their stuff, where the people with the booths inside might be a bit better off? I know when I go to "high-end" markets or collection conventions, prices are sky-high even for fakies. People don't research, they just hope to meet buyers even less knowledgeable than they are.

Skeen, one market that has been amazing to me is like that, although not outdoors. It's a shady looking building in a not so nice area of the city -we do NOT park there and leave the car unattended! Sometimes the higher end places or shops that have high overhead (rent in big cities isn't cheap here) have much higher prices, but I figure they are worth a look. Once I found a SS Angel and Hippity at an antique store that was mostly filled with fine furniture from the 1700-1800's. The pair cost me $5 and they were given to my friend who was missing Angel. :D

I have sold at a couple toy shows, bought lots of ponies that way really cheap, passed up others that were really expensive. My booth had cleaned and groomed ponies for much higher prices then others selling by the box at $3-5 each but in much nicer condition. I sold a LOT of them. Some larger items like Softies or Playsets I can get much more money for at these places as there's no shipping costs for the buyer. I sold some to collectors but most sold to people who had them as kids and were very happy to find them all prettied up without going the ebay route, most just paid and didn't even haggle (I don't mind haggling). :D

I've noticed a lot of G2 ponies (especially European ones) end up being sold at higher prices than they should be, one I saw in her original package for $220 and I bought her without the box and accessory for one tenth of that. I also bought a few G4 Ponies in their packages at an anime convention shortly after they came out and was disappointed when I saw that Lily Blossom was about $4 cheaper on ebay (though now I've seen her sell at up to $50 so I feel better about it now, I suppose she's harder to find since a lot of them were used for Derpy customs)

I've also noticed that some ebay sellers really gouge you when it comes to shipping items, particularly when they're shipping from the U.S. to Canada (even more so when they're making an exception) I don't live that far into Canada, the boarder is only a few hours drive away, sometimes I can understand but others just make no sense; One example was when I bought some foil Pony cards for $30 and I had to have them sent to my friend's house because the seller only offered free shipping within the U.S. while having it shipped to Canada would have been another $30 (Really now? He didn't even put them in individual sleeves, just a little cellophane envelope sandwiched between two pieces of card board)

I know that blind bags can be overly expensive too, one of the big ones is when they charge over $30 for a set of the mane 6 Ponies without the cards when you can get the Toys R Us set which includes them, 6 other Ponies, and the cards (which are in the style of the wave 2 cards, the hardest set to find) for less than that. But by far the worst case I've seen is the Rainbow Dash Promo card; people who got it for free were charging $300 for it, fortunately I managed to get mine for significantly less from a very nice seller who acknowledged that whatever he made on it was pure profit and gave me a really good price on it, only $5 above what I said I wanted to pay

That is absoloutely ridiculous! D:
I understand people need to make a profit, but if you get something FOR FREE you should not be selling it on, especially not for hundreds of dollars. D:

Honestly, I have to disagree!

I got a promo card from a pony con event once. You can't really control the demand for these things, especially when there are only so many copies ever made.

They made very sure that every person only got one, and well, what you want to do with it is what you want to do with it. You can keep it, or you can sell it online. I personally sold mine, and if a person wants to spend $200 on a trading card (which was the going rate)? That's their prerogative, and it works just fine for me. Paid for my con costs in one go.

Believe it or not a number of those were actually done by the buyers; at one point between the tail end of the listings of convention ones and the ones from other events there was one seller who listed a Rainbow Dash promo card at $300 and somebody purchased it. After the event in the U.K. a number of the listings started at just $1 but quickly escalated to over $200.

Why do people do that anyway? Bid on an item days before it ends, there's a good chance that somebody else will bid on it and you'll have raised the price for nothing some people even get into a bidding war days before it ends. Granted once I bid on an item a few hours before the end of the listing since I had an event I was going to, but in that case it was the last two volumes in a series where the translation was dropped due it not being popular enough so there wasn't very much demand for the original Japanese release of the final volumes.

And by the way, at that event you could get more than one, the seller I bought from had several

Oh and look at this everypony, this must be the crowned queen of over priced Ponies:
Sad Depressed Lonely Blue MLP Winged Pony from A Broken Home Needs Lots O Luv | eBay

$10,000 for Glow? Really? There's a whole bunch of Glows listed right now, there's one that's only 0.1% of that price of this one even the ones still in the box don't sell for anywhere near this much

^

WOW not even HTF variants in the package are that rediculously priced!

Anyway, overpricing is the reason I only buy my G4s from Chinese Sellers on Ebay or from Taobao. They're just was too overpriced on eBay!

For example, I was looking for VII Ploomette on eBay and someon was selling her for 40$

40$!

She's worth 14 at the most!

Oh lawdy, what was i reading? He really spun a yarn on that one.
Hahah, it must be a joke price. Although, it says there has been 14 offers and they were all declined or ignored. Ohmigosh! :surprisepony:

That ish cheezes me off on pretty much everything second hand or directly fresh off the shelves. I always try to use my own good judgment on what to price ponies to folks before I sell it to them. I believe people could get away selling MIB's somewhat a little over what they originally sold for when they came out in stores but some people have the tendency of thinking, well... gee, this is a 'vintage' toy so automatically anything 'vintage' to them equals money signs everywhere. I mean, check out the loose gen 1 ponies, a lot of these nutty people are selling them even for prices they know they can't get away selling them for in hopes some naive person will come along to help them out. Sad part is, these ponies cost so much less than what it took to produce them by the hands of people who make nearly as much as people selling them off of Ebay or Etsy! Its sad but true.

A good business should mean fair. Plain and simple!

I know some ponies are worth more than others. I kinda feel I spent too much on my Baby Swirly but there is literally one ebay seller that ever sells her and her mom Princess Silver Swirl. I ended up spending $60 for Baby Swirly because of a bidding war.

I know I was crazy but I know on a MOC Cupcake I got over charged on shipping by $8 and when I mentioned it they blamed their Postal service from Canada to California... They refused to refund the difference... :( Last time I ever bought something from them :(
