OK so this happens every time I want to customize a pony. I search for the bait I want, buy the bait, get it in the mail, clean it up and keep it. So I look for a new pony to actually bait, but end up with like 5 new ponies instead.

It's SO hard for me to bait ponies. The hardest thing to bait is ofcourse g1s. I know people say 'well she's common' and whatnot, but if everyone keeps baiting them they will not be common anymore. That's the thoughts that go through my mind before I pop their heads off to remove the hair. Or the thought that stops me......

Do you feel the same way or not? Do you care even if the pony is common, or does that just make it a given reason to bait the pony?

What makes a bait pony to you?

She's done :) Look how amazing she is *post below*

The reason I made this is because i just bought this bride to bait her. I already bought 3 brides in this bait hunt and i was sure this one was gonna be the last. But now I'm so torn about it.

Have a look. This is her before I cleaned her. Oh man was I sure I was gonna bait her....

BUT I cleaned her up and now I just don't know if I can bait her >_<

I know a lot of people will say 'Oh but she's a common pony and look at those stains' but still :nodno: I could sunfade her..... and her hair isn't terrible, it's not cut....

I'm driving myself crazy!

Aaaaaaaand she's done :) Just a tiiiiny bit of faded pink highlighter left, but you can't see it on display. I'm so happy I decided to sunfade her :)

For you.... fakies.

Or do they scream out "nooooo" to you as well? LOL!!!

I think its really up to the person I can bait G3s no questions asked if they are very common. Though G1s I do have a harder time baiting and I think it depends on how baity they are. I recently found a moondancer no symbols with marker or lipstick stain on its mouth but im not sure if I wanna bait her or not.

exactly. i got a half bald rosedust with chewed off ears, still couldn't get myself to bait her cause her body is perfect :p

Ahhhh! You're just like me! I found a Raincurl with wierd spots and messed up ears, but I still fixed it up with clay and painted over the dots. You really can't tell that she was "restored"
It's a hobby for me. I can't bring myself to bait it.

I think it has to be a personal decision.

I would bait that bride due to her stains. You could potentially keep the hair for another project. However, this is me and what I would do, not you and what you would do. You may do what I would do and regret it forever. You don't want that (because then you really will never bait a pony... ever).

It has to be a decision you're comfortable with. I second the fakies remark. If you just can't bait your legitimate ponies, bait the fakies instead.

Well, I'm kind of a 'save the ponies' non-customizer, with a good sized collection full of an even mix of perfect ponies, and ponies who would be considered bait, so I might be a little biased. But I am glad that I'm not the only one with the mindset of 'a common pony that keeps being baited won't be common forever'. I mean it's true, isn't it?

I'd really like to see people bait way less G1s. That bride pony looks gorgeous. As you said - a little sunfading and she'd be just fine! It doesn't matter how common she is...she's a G1! G1s are only common in the collecting community...

Commons from later generations aren't quite as bad, I suppose.

I do wish more people would use fakies though - especially when they resculpt the pony so much that you can't even tell what the face used to look like - in such cases it doesn't matter if the former pony had a nice Hasbro face, or a weird fakie face... =P

i want a g1 bride bait for my project - painting her up as another g1 pony ;)

but i think i will have to look around a litle more :p maybe one with awful hair aswell, then i might aswell rehair/repaint.

i've ended up saving quite a few ponies, and i've used fakies as baits. i just don't have the heart to do this:p which is why i don't customize unless i have the perfect project in mind!

I completely agree! ^^^^^^^^

I've had a huge lot of G1's sitting in my pony room for months because I can't get up the courage to turn them into something else. Even though all of them are baits for sure (no eyes, no symbols, covered in sharpie, ears chewed on, no hair, cut neck plugs etc). But they're G1's! I grew up with G1's! lol Everytime I buy a new lot of G3 baits my bf rolls his eyes at me because I have so many!

I do this all the time!! Guh! It's so bad, I have a huge box of "baits" that I keep looking at and thinking, "no, she's fine, so's she!" Grrr!

I'm with you, Cannibalcow, she doesn't look like a bait. Someone on one of the forums was searching for a G1 bait, so I offered her one, and she was like: I was looking for one with a perfect body. I was thinking to myself, "That's not a bait! That's a pony with a haircut!" And to me, those can just be rehaired! I wish people would just restore those instead of baiting them.

I don't bait G1 ponies no matter how awful they are; I even make it a hobby to restore G1's that have been trashed. Rehairing, repainting cutie marks and eyes, bleaching stains, etc...I enjoy the challenge.

The worst thing I ever did to a G1 was "frankenpony" a pegacorn/alicorn Surprise by combining a Glory head that I rehaired(her body had nasty chew marks all over its legs) and a Surprise that had a bad haircut.(I still kept her head!) I still felt slightly guilty doing it!
:violin:

Oohhh I always get so disappointed whenever I've seen a before and after of a G1 pony that was what I'd consider, non-bait!! They're cast is just so beautiful and I always just wish they used a G3 or something instead!

Bluerose, bluh, that really aches my heart to hear someone want that.. some people don't recognise frugal mindedness as much as they should I think  Fixing ponies to me is actually quite a eco-friendly doll hobby considering we are recycling old bases!

Fleetfoot - you know, some people do molding on top of ponies! Take that old G1 sitting Edward Scissorhands for example. I think if you ever come across the predicament of a badly shapen pony again, you could try donating the bitten body to a creative sort to do something with it - it may ease the guilt, I'm sure :)

Cannibalcow, with your bride pony... those pen marks look real deep I'd have to say :( One thing I think of when people go to do intensive scrubbing or washing or the like is the surface texture of the pony will change... you'd lose the grain and sheen of the original plastic casting, if that makes sense?
Leaving her in the sun to fade those ink marks off doesn't seem likely either.. she'd still have those marks on that delicate shade of white.

I'd.. yeah, probably bait her...

......IF she didn't have her hair as neat as you've got it now! ;) That's what would make me keep her. But then, I only have a tiny collection so if I ever had any G1 pony, she'd be a keeper for me so mark my opinion slightly less valid :icon_smile_lachuh:

Now that's an idea! I actually am a "creative sort", lol. I do a variety of art and crafts including some sculpting, although I would probably be more inclined to try to fix the holes and chews rather than customize. I bet apoxie sculpt would do the trick!

That poor Glory that I mentioned is actually missing one hoof and the others look like a dog got a hold of it, but I think it was a child instead. I may try my hand at resculpting missing hooves/horns/etc. an dee what comes of it. :)

And on the subject of whether or not a pony should be baited, I just bought a lot on eBay for very cheap, and most of them are simply dirty and frizzy with a few missing tails. Easy fixes, not bait IMO.

About the marks on the bride pony; have you tried benzoyl peroxide? I have sucessfully used acne cream to fade out some really severe ink stains on white ponies. From what I have heard, it discolors blue, purple, and green but is safe on white and lighter shades of pink and yellow.

I have this exact same problem! I've been buying more and more ponies only because I wanted to customize them. I have a grand total of three customs, the rest sit all cleaned up and pretty on a shelf or safely packed away in a box. Never to be touched by customizing hands lol. I think eventually I'll actually customize some but otherwise I would suggest to just restore them and find either fakies or seriously poor condition ponies to customize.

well it's been a few days, and i agree with all of you. she's safe :p i just can't get myself to bait her. i need someone to cut the pony up an prep it before they send it to me ugh XD

so if anyone has a BAIT bride please let me know :p jeez how many brides will i end up with? :helpsmilie::blush::hide::uhoh:

I think some collectors take the ponies a little too seriously and forget on important thing: above all, these ponies are toys. And toys excist to make people happy. The pony shouldn't be a source of stress or guilt. This one's borderline bait. If you are happier keeping her the way she is, then keep her. If you will find joy in customizing her then customize. Do what makes you happy! :)
