Names for possible custom ponies.....

I like the sound of Jasmine for a flutter pony, maybe light blue body with white hair and obviously white jasmine flower as her cutie mark.

Comet Chase for a deep purple unicorn who has mid blue hair with a glow in the dark streak and silver tinsel, and a silver & gold glitter cutie mark representing a.... you guessed it... comet.

Her friend could be called Star Gaze, a golden yellow pegasus who has light pink hair with a glow in the dark and gold tinsel with a silver & gold glitter telescope cutie mark.

And maybe Aurora Magic to complete the trio, a pink Earth pony with mint green hair featuring the same glow in the dark streak as the other two, with gold and green glitter cutie mark displaying a wavy curtain, just like the Northern Lights.

Does anyone else think about what they may want to try when they think about customising?

Thanks

I usually make the pony, then come up with a name. Usually I get a colour combo in my head and build everything around that.

Your ideas sound great! I can't wait to see what you come up with

Thanks! Since dipping my toe into the world of Etsy and seeing everyone's creations, I feel inspired. However to sacrifice a ponys original identity, I feel you really have to do it justice, and I'm afraid I'll **** it right up. Also, I really need the sales of my dupes/baits to make way for getting my missing ponies. Its definitely something I want to try once I've gotten my grails. It would be really awesome if Hasbro did a competition (I know they would never) for custom g1s, and the ones that won might be featured in a special g1 my little pony and friends episode! XD

Those sound pretty

So for any UK customisers, what brand acrylics, sealants, hair, brushes and fine glitter, have people found the most successful?

I've been using System 3 acrylics by Daler Rowney for years (although only recently for ponies). I've always been happy with them when I've used them. Recently got some Americana paints and used one of those colours on a custom, that seemed pretty good too. They're an American brand I think but there's shops here that sell them (including Hobbycraft). I've also got some Humbrol paints to try on blind bags as they're designed for models and I thought they'd be worth a try. Haven't used them yet but I can let you know what they're like when I do if you'd like.

I've got Mod Podge for sealant, can't say if it's the best or not, got it because it's useful for a variety of craft projects that I do not just for ponies which is why I chose that. (I have the matte version).

For brushes you do want to make sure to get good ones. There are brushes designed for use with acrylic paint and that's mostly what I use. Places like WHSmith sometimes sell them in packets with a variety of different sized brushes, which I've found good value when I've been looking for them. Also useful top tip: for very small fine details try using a pin or toothpick to paint with.

Hair and glitter I can't help with from personal experience I'm afraid. For the brushable custom I've done I used Milliput to make sculpted hair rather than re-hairing it and the others I'm planning to do I'm planning to do their hair the same way too. I'm sure I've seen a web page or two where people talk about different types of hair to use on ponies and compare them, if you'd like I can see if I can find them again and post a link. Glitter I never use at all, sorry.

No problem. I've been doing crafts for years, always happy to talk about them. Still new-ish at custom ponies but it's something I'm enjoying and plan to do more.

With the System 3 acrylics it's the Original rather than Heavy Body type you'd want if you're painting ponies by the way. They can be bought individually or in sets with a selection of different colours. I started with a selection box which was great as it gave me a range of colours straight away (and the option to mix more as well), now I tend to get tubes of the colours that are my favourites (they also do larger pots of some colours, I have one of those for white because it's a colour I use a lot). For the Americana paints I got a selection box too (although that had lots of small tubs of different colours and one bottle of white and one bottle of black, rather than larger tubes) as it was good value and I thought it'd be a nice way to try that brand. I've since gotten some bottles of a couple of colours from their range too though as I've found I like it from what I've used so far, I particularly love the Blue Harbor colour.

If you're looking to do restoration you've probably come cross the My Little Pony Preservation Project website but if not: http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/index.html There's a section on there about glitter, and it's also one of the places where there's information about different types of hair to use with ponies too.

There's something rather nice about restoring ponies I think. :) Most of the ones I've bought in not great condition have been specifically to use as customs but I've gotten a couple I wanted to keep as they were who had pen marks and/or paint on them that could be removed and whose hair needed a bit of attention. Patience, warm water, an old toothbrush, a comb and a bit of elbow grease and ta-da, a pony who is perhaps not perfect but certainly nice enough to display.

It can be annoying when you hear about something that sounds perfect for a craft project or something like that then it turns out it's only available somewhere else. I love the prints on some of the fabrics Jo Ann Fabrics has on their website (including some of the pony ones) and would really like to get some but they don't ship to the UK.

If you've got any questions you think I might be able to help with feel free to ask. I do a few different crafts so am familiar with a few different materials. Certainly don't claim to be an expert on anything but I have a lot of fun with my hobbies.

Another bit of advice that's probably rather obvious but worth mentioning is that it's worth shopping around for some craft materials. One example is Milliput, I've found the price of that varies quite widely, it can be rather expensive some places and much more reasonable in others. Also worth keeping an eye out for offers, Hobbycraft have done something along the lines of "get a discount code if you join our newsletter list" or something like that in the past if I remember correctly for example.

I'm not really sure how I plan out a custom

Usually when I'm enjoying life in other ways I something I want to make into a project
Then when designs pop up randomly, visions form as I cake a palette of materials

I admit to feeling tempted as some of my ponies are closer to the bait end of the spectrum than excellent condition. Not sure that I could really bring myself to customize one of my G1's yet, even in this condition, but we'll see! :batfly:

So I finished with the concept of my Storm Fury Flutter Ponies with a little help from some friends. Now I'm on trying so figure out some lore to help ease my Night Guardian Ponies into my parallel Ponyland. Any critique/help much appreciated. Here goes:

Late one night, when Majesty was having trouble putting a couple of the Baby Ponies to sleep for fear of a nightmare, she looked up to the velvet sky and sang a secret song-spell.

A shimmering mist eased over from yonder and started to coalesce into three vague pony like shapes. Three unicorns stepped out of the shimmer, and shook their manes, staring at each other and Majesty in amazement.

Majesty stepped forward and touched horns with the first pony, causing a kaleidoscope of light to emanate from the contact. When the fire flowers dissipated, she bestowed magical power upon the other two unicorns in the same manner. In response, the three new unicorns bowed to Majesty and closed their eyes, feeling the magic run through their bodies.

Majesty announced, "My three wonderful beauties, I have called you into being from all that is good and light. You all have power to dispel and divert all that is evil and dark, which seeks entrance into this realm through the dreams of my dear ponies in this land. I grant you the strength, skill and will to stand fast against those who would seek to harm my ponies through their dreams. Your partner in this battle shall be the Sandman, and between the four of you, may not one more nightmare cause one of the little ponies upset."

The three Night Guardian Ponies looked up to the Moon, and with their magic vision that sees through the veils of reality, caught sight of a happy Sandman waving down to them, eagerly awaiting the start of a new friendship.

If you're not comfortable transforming the pony in to something new yet perhaps restoration might be a nice thing to try?

When I've been looking for bait to use for projects I have in mind that I'd like to do I try to make sure to find ones who really are in bait condition (e.g. marks on them or haircuts) as much as possible (and they're G4s). You know you've managed to find some ponies in not great condition when you find yourself going "I hope that's chocolate", more than once. :lolpony: Also a small piece of gum in one pony's tail. Makes me wonder what some of these poor ponies have been through. :lolpony:

Hope thats chocolate!!!!!! nice lol!!!

I'm really getting excited about buying my mats for customising at the end of next month! Coming up with the lore for my custom sets is really giving me the boost I need to go get at it! I've got a Little Book Of Big Ideas, where I'm adding the lore to the concept illustrations and notes on what Nylon shades would go well, and a little information about the individual pony.

So far I have:

Storm Fury Flutter Ponies
Night Guardian Ponies
Glowing Garden Flutter Ponies
Arctic Fun Ponies
Fortune Teller Ponies
Sky Searcher Ponies (astronomers)
Additional Rainbow Ponies
Fire Lighter Ponies (pyrotechnics)

This is so much fricking fun!!

What a delightful origin story! Now you simply MUST bring these Ponies to life! I look so forward to your creations! :ponylove:

Thankyou sweet! I'll be buying the mats with my end-of June pay packet, I'll start with my Storm Fury Flutters before bringing the Night Guardian Unicorns to life. I found in WH Smiths yesterday a hardback notebook with Little Book Of Big Ideas, with was perfect, and I'm using it as my concept book for customs, with coloured in illustrations printed off Google, with what specific shade of Nylon hair from the UK supplier I've tracked down, might go best, along with the lore of each set. Then, if my creations are good enough for other people to want, then when I send the customs off, the buyer can have a copy of the lore I have to go along with the pony, if they want. I so so wish Hasbro would bring back G1, but that's not going to happen, so creating my own is the next best thing. xx

One of the ponies I've gotten who was one of those was a Rarity, I could just imagine her reaction considering how she acts in the show. "How on Earth could someone possibly get a pony as fabulous as me dirty like this?" :lolpony: She'd been scribbled on as well. She was one I wanted to keep as she was rather than use as bait, luckily she cleaned up well. I was amused by the thought that she'd enjoy a sorta toy spa treatment, a nice bath, having her hooves scrubbed and her hair brushed carefully. :lolpony: I'm easily amused.

Having used a couple more of the different colours of Americana paints I can say I'm happy with them on the project I'm working on so far by the way. :)

Having a book to keep your ideas for customs in is a great idea. :) I just have a simple list for mine (but then mine aren't very complicated :) ).
