Tail Rust!

I've been washing my ponies, and poor Snowflake has a severe case of tail rust. The washer's been eaten through and it's going to take a lot of work.

I really, really hate cats.

Aw! Bummer!

Cat didn't pee on your Ponies and rust 'em did they?

My cat Natasha Nosy Noodle tinkled on a pile of Ponies once. She was a mean ol' jealous cat.

Exactly that. :madpony: So annoying. Cats are nasty creatures. I think Wind Whistler needs work too.

Any tips for whitening the hair up again? I read somewhere that toothpaste is good (hair is all cleaned and disinfected, so it can be put back.)

Peroxide or Oxyclean will get the hair nice and clean again. Or white vinegar (which will also help knock out any odors). I've used toothpaste too, and it smells nice.

I dunno why cats do these things. When one of our cats targets something we love, we say the cat is 'lodging a protest'. It does appear that they understand we love our Ponies so they mess them up to be jerks. I love my cats, but they are pretty malice minded when they get ticked.

To be honest I think my cats would destroy everything I love because my bedroom was forbidden territory. The door was always closed, so whenever it was open there would be a mad rush to go in, explore and go to the toilet. They also enjoyed jumping on things and knocking them off. I lost a gorgeous fairy globe, smashed to smithereens, because of that.

Do they do Oxyclean in the UK? I'll try toothpaste first, and if that doesn't work I'll go for the peroxide. Should I change the tail clamp, because it isn't that rusty in itself, it was just the washer.

Dang it, I hope your ponies recover soon
That is why we dont own a cat. They pee EVERYWHERE. EVEN ON THE COUCH :surprisepony:

Vin 21 writes- With the tail rust you can use Oxyclean to get rid of it. it works great with my "rusty" ponies, lolz.
Dusky writes - I've heard toothpaste/dish soap is good for rusty tails.

I'll need to give this a try... my Euro Snowflake also has tail rust, and I think one other pony may be starting to get it as well. But what I want to know is, do you think it's worth it to open up all of your ponies, clean their insides and replace the metal washers with zip ties to prevent tail rust, even if they don't already have signs of rust?

If your cat is peeing somewhere other than in the litter box (or outside if the case may be) then it means there's something wrong. Either they're ill, or they're stressed because they don't agree with a change, be it in their surroundings, their food, their litter, or the people or animals living with them. They are very sensitive to these things, and they have no other means to tell you they're upset but to pee or poop in a different place. They aren't spiteful creatures, despite what so many people seem to think. Also, often when young male cats reach puberty they start peeing on literally everything – beds, furniture, carpets and tiled floors, curtains, books, clothing... mine even went on the stove top. But as soon as we got him fixed, the peeing instantly stopped. It was as if he was possessed and not able to control himself until he had the snip.

I keep my cat out of my bedroom only because she won't leave once she's in there and I can't get her out when I need to sleep. If I try to sleep with her there, she gets restless because I toss and turn a lot. But she does also get up into places where there isn't actually anywhere for her to stand or sit, and end up knocking things over – that much is true of all cats.

I use CLR to clean the rust off tails. I think there is also a product that is for rust stains (as opposed to large rust deposits), which would be great for getting the stain off the actual tail. Then, just make sure to clean the product off very well and condition the hair and replace the washer/clip with a few plastic zip ties. :)

I use Orange Cleaner. That works very well but I never tried CLR but I heard Rit Rust remover works too.

I know! I miss my cats something evil, but then I remember they used to do things like this.

Thank you! I'm getting along quite well, though.

I don't actually have my cats anymore, so I only need to deal with the problems that are already there.

As for why they would do it... they didn't have any problems, medical, environmental or otherwise. Sometimes something can just be spiteful for the sake of it. Otherwise they wouldn't stare right in your face and knock something over on purpose.

Interesting. Very handy to know.

I've had some luck with a simple combination of toothpaste and baking soda :) Some cases will be more difficult than others, of course, and attention should be paid that you don't end up accidentally bleaching the color from a non-white tail. Personally I like to replace rusty tail washers, since sometimes the rust is stubborn. Good luck :)

I didn't think of baking soda! Thank you.
