Full disclosure: I saw someone else's "steampunk" custom and thought I could do a better one. The two customs have nothing in common (other than a dubious claim to being steampunk.)

This girl started as a very sad, cancer-ridden Magic Hat from Blitzn. There was no use saving her, as she had no symbols left and her body was stained. After a lot of prep cleaning, I started painting her to look like woodgrain:

A pegasus needs wings, of course. Ideally, I wanted to use real copper. Realistically, I knew I'd slice myself open. Sculpting wouldn't give me the look I wanted, being too thick, and I didn't want shiny transparent wings. What a dilemma! I reverted to what I'm familiar with: PAPER.

Each "feather" is a separate piece of paper, pieced individually. They were painted, then coated with Liquid Sculpey for some durability.

The body needed hair, of course, so I rehaired with Dollyhair's Fudge Cake and Golden Sun before assembling the wings. (Yes, there's a chain in the tail!)

Then we started the fun body details (every good Victorian era custom needs a pocket watch, for starters!) Most of the bits are from broken jewelry I'd been saving for something like this.

After that, we have to do some hairstyling:

A few more touches, and then we have the pony herself:

She still needs some goggles and perhaps a bit more jewelry or clothing to finish off the look, but the pony herself is pretty much finished. Her details are really more Gothic Revival/Victorian than properly steampunk, but I didn't want to just toss a lot of gears and bolts and stuff on her to make her look mechanical for no reason (probably my biggest pet peeve with steampunk are the random useless gears and bolts.) I think she's more of a delicate Victorian gewgaw than the airship to rule all airships. *g*

So, what do you think of her, now that you made the run through the gauntlet?

I love her! Agree totally with you on the useage of gears and such! She is so totally different, it's perfect. Good Job completly!.

Oh, wow...I have NO idea what steampunk is, but...she looks so completely amazing!

Oh wow, so many replies already! *blush*

WarmSnuggles, I am actually a "fast" painter, so the body and wing painting was actually one of the quickest parts. Maybe two days to get the wood graining and a day on the wings (including the times I put it down to dry, went to work, ate, all that fun stuff.) I had to out her down while I was busy at my real job, but I've been poking on her off and on since September, lol.

And yes, I am a huge Michael Moorcock fan, like the Wiki article mentioned. Probably why my idea is more Victorian than punk. (Una Pegasus? Meet Una Persson. Una Persson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
