Would anyone care to discuss with me why they think the shipping between Rarity and Spike in FiM is going to happen/should happen? Because, quite frankly, to me it seems ridiculous.

I love how Spike has a crush on rarity. I think it's adorable how he follows her around like a puppy. It adds a cute charm and it reminds me of a young child fawning over an older peer. Now an actual relationship would push it in my opinion. No offence to anyone but I would find it incredibly uncomfortable. Spike is a young dragon. She's a full grown pony. It just seems weird and I certainly hope they won't put them in an actual relationship. Again sorry if I'm being close minded. It just isn't my cup of tea.

I share your opinion on if it actually happened - I just find the crush tiring and unnecessary. One of the main reasons I enjoy watching shows for young children i that there are no relationships just for the sake of there being romance, and I'd hate it if My Little Pony went that way.

I do agree on that! Relationships can get confusing and messy. It can take away from the point of the show. The beauty of the My Little Pony show is its lightheartedness and simplicity. I guess the reason why I don't mind the crush is because I find it doesn't take away from the plot. I think it gives it a cute twist. I do however see how it can get tiring as every other children's show has had a crush scenario in one way or another.

Uh huh. It's just, it does take away from the experience for me. An episode is often fine and running smoothly, and then a Spike-being-rendered-stupid-because=of-Rarity moment happens and just glares out of the episode. I simply don't think it belongs.

Spike being attracted to an equine just strikes me as sad evidence that he hasn't been spending enough time with his own species. It's like how a sexually frustrated parrot will imprint upon a human like they would a mate. He's an intelligent being taken out of his natural element, with all the sociopsychological consequences that come with it.

(Tongue may be in cheek. I'm not completely sure. That's part of the fun.)

I was going to be all psychological and here PurplePowder beats me to the punch. Being of like mind, we must now have tea and cupcakes!

Um whut

I dunno but eww. trans species relationship between two animals is a big fat no in a children's cartoon. he wasn't like that in the original, shouldn't be like that now.

It's probably more common than you think! Anthropomorphized animals are ultimately stand-ins for humans, or some particular aspect of humanity, so most writers probably don't think twice about this sort of thing. Not that I'm saying they shouldn't.

I guess he absorbed Heart Throb's inability to be attracted to her own kind in the generational jump?

trust me...I know how common it is. but there are always people who take things a little too far and it ruins any innocence that was there.

:coolpony:you win the thread foofoo

We will celebrate with wild dancing and cupcakes! Then later, once the lights have dimmed, we will stealthily enter yon woods and bop as many field mice as we can gets our paws or hooves or hands on! The carnage will be beautiful! Beautiful, I tell you!

Bwahahaha!

I like Spike's crush on Rarity, because it presents a lot of opportunity for exploring themes of unrequited love and one-sided relationships, as well as unconditional and selfless love, and I think most importantly, unprejudiced love. Even though Spike and Rarity couldn't one day have a physical relationship or offspring, that doesn't mean that they can't still be together and love each other. Love is no more about two ponies or two dragons than it is about a man and a woman, or two white people, or people of the same age group. Spike and Rarity are there to show that love transcends physical boundaries and cultural norms. People would judge them if they ever got together, just as so many are judged every day for simply being who they are and loving who they love. Before you say "it's sick and unnatural" and "it's not like that in the original texts"... stop for a moment and think how you're beginning to sound.

That said, while I can only hope that the developers would be brave enough to come out and tell it like it is, I do believe that the best outcome for this crush is inevitably Rarity turning him down and finding someone else, leaving Spike to come to terms with the pain of an unrequited love, because that is just safer and more expected, easier for parents to accept, and will lead to less backlash. If by the end of the series Spike grew up, he and Rarity got married and they had a little Discord baby, it would be edited out faster than Derpy was...

now that I think about it, there was donkey and the pink dragon....

I find Spike's crush as really cute, but it's like how a younger sibling might develop a crush on a friend. Would be really weird if there was mutual attraction.
