So what IS Core 7?!

=\ you've got some very really points, goddessofpeep.

I know if I were a parent, I wouldn't want to spend my money on the same pony over and over again. Even as a collector I've lost taste with the G3s because I keep seeing the same pony but in a different pose or with a new hat, and it was the unique variation of the G1s which made me like MLP to begin with. -_-

Core 7, not gonna lie, I hate it.

as a collector:

I'm not a G3 collector, but if one stands out to me that is unique and I like, I will get her. But I don't like any of the Core 7, so I doubt that will happen anymore.

as a parent:
I would buy my daughter malibu barbie, sports barbie, school barbie, fancy dinner barbie...every occasion. they have enough accessories that each one is different. what made ponies each different was their symbols and colors. I would NOT buy pinkie pie over and over again and have ten different accessories only after I had bought 10 pinkie pies!

Well I think the Core 7 is a clever marketing strategy but a bad choice in from a collector's point of view. I think Hasbro's main issues to tackle are things such as:

1) Kids are growing up faster. Little girls can wean off ponies or toys altogether as early as age 10-12. Notice they've been targeting younger and younger audiences?

2) Retaining existing customers - it is actually more difficult to retain existing customers because overtime, they grow really grumpy and difficult to handle. It is actually more practical to look for new customers, and America alone isn't short of that with so many tourists and foreigners entering the country everyday.

4) Most of the general public and girls just ripe of age to learn about ponies don't even know what MLP is. They like it, they buy, if not, they just pick something else.

5) America is currently having an economic turndown. Likewise, Hasbro being an American firm is affected too. Costs will go up. Making ponies in many poses and colours will increase production costs.

Doing re-releases is probably a try and proven doll selling formula and judging from sales around me so far, it seems the Core 7 thing is taking off fairly well. And if this holds just as well, if not better, then Hasbro will keep using the same tactic based on sales volume because it keeps the cost down without having to churn out too many colours and new poses, and neither will they need to invest much in design, while making just as much money. Makes perfect sense to me, although I'd wish they're vary slightly once in a while.

It's not really that bizarre. Think about other doll lines. Think about Barbie or Bratz. Same doll, over and over again. A few changes in makeup or hair style/colour maybe, lots of different outfits and accessories - but the dolls are all the same. When they introduce a new character it's a huge deal, and "NEW FRIEND" is plastered everywhere on the box. But otherwise, it's the same over and over.
It's not that outrageous to figure out where Hasbro got the idea, nor to imagine it working, given other models.

Just because it's not what collectors want doesn't mean it will be unsuccessful.

Yeah? Well these aren't dolls.

No one said it would be unsuccessful, but they should be thinking about the collectors who keep them going a good amount.

In my eyes, collectors of anything are the backbone to companies. Depending.

in a way this is so true. Hasbro should be looking at it from a 'collector' point of view because they want everyone, whether they are 3 or 300, to 'collect' them, don't they ? Right on the back cards, doesn't it say "collect them all!!" ?

I don't see myself buying G3s retail much anymore either. I just got into collecting again, now all the interesting things stop being made? Great! That will just help me save my money for more G1s. I like them better anyway.

I don't like the plastic clothes the core 7 has either. Sure, they may hold up better, but they just aren't as nice as the good old cloth. They're probably cheaper to make though.

Eh.. whatever. I'll just keep getting ponies from thrift stores and stuff. If Hasbro keeps this boring crud up, they won't wind up with any of my money.

Just think back to when you were a kid, they had 3 barbies, brown hair, blonde hair and African American. How many Barbies did you toss into the box because there is no need to have 15 blonde barbies lying out, you just needed the one. The same is going to happen with the MLP. Unless they can think up some spectacular ideas for these core 7 that will make you want to buy each, I see a grim future

5) Hasbro already had a way to re-release the characters so kids could still get their favorites even after they had moved on to the next set. They gave them new poses and made them into the ponywear sets. They cost about a dollar more per pony, but you got a bunch of accessories with it. They also stuck re-releases in store exclusive packs, bonus packs, and special releases. It wasn't exactly popular with collectors, but it worked.

.

I agree with this, the they the differnt Barbies come with many accesories while the diference in core 7 is just a new hat or a kite.

If the core 7 dosen't stop I see the G4 comming soon.

Just try to image what could happened if the ponies had a core 7 from the start. :doh5B15D:

The original 6 and Peachy relased over over again, and all in the collectors pose.

And no other pony would existed for example TE, no big brothers, so-softs, moutain boys, mail orders, no unicors, no pegs O-o
