The older one is a Franklin
Looks like it used to have a table.
These look right. Franklin rotary sewing machine and a page from the sears/roebuck catalog.

The other one is newer and harder to read in the picture. I think it's a dressmaker.

The pin In the bobbin tray spins freely but the bobbin casing gets locked up I'm thinking the casing was replaced at some point because it doesn't seem to be the same color as the rest of the mettle.

Bobbins can be the death of a machine.

I'm having bobbin issues right now.my newer machine has one of the drop in bobbins and it seems to just wreck the tension. I love that my partner bought me a new machine, but I'm back to using my old Singer. I never have trouble with it.

My Mamaw taught me to sew on an old Singer pedal sewing machine. You just used foot power and sewed at your own pace. I loved that old thing.Sadly, my Papaw took it to the dump and bought her a new machine and she just cried and cried. Papaw thought he'd done something nice for her, but she dearly loved her old machine. Later I bought my mom a 1921 pedal machine at the flea market and she was crazy for it. Now it's mine. Just seeing it makes me happy.

What kind of machine is the new one. A lot of the new ones will not take a different kind of bobbin. They’re made to take brand specific and plastic bobbins. (Super annoying.) The issue can be as simple as the threading or how you put the bobbin in. I know with mine, if the bobbin is upside down it will mess with the tension of the machine. Also if too much thread dust is inside the machine it can mess with the tension. :( I joined a sewing group on fb and those ladies have saved my frustration many times. Lol

Just curious, which Facebook group are you in?
I'm pretty sure I've joined every group that has the word "sewing" in the title. :lolpony:

There's a singer pedal machine on fb marketplace right now. They're just so fascinating and no electricity usage, so, super green.

I'm not a fan of the drop in bobbins and self threading. Guess I just like the stick with what I know.

I couldn't live without my pre-wound bobbins, but I second the advice to look up what size/shape of bobbin your machine takes and make sure that's the kind you're feeding it, and in the right direction. It seems like it shouldn't make a difference, but it's a huge change in how much tension is on the line, and tension's the thing that makes the magic happen.

I have my machines sorted into "p"s and "q"s, based on the shape the bobbin makes with the tail of thread falling off it when the bobbin goes in correctly, as a way of remembering. That letter is prominent in the name of each machine (because of course I named them, I talk to them, too).

Oh no! you should never get rid of the old thing before you know if they like the new one o_O

I talk to mine, too. Sometimes all they need is a little pep talk.

At my Makerspace in Detroit, it's a running gag that the old embroidery machine loves me, but wants to bite the Zone Coordinator, because he won't talk to her, but I pet her and coo at her and ask her nicely.

She's my baby, and I miss her. I haven't visited for almost a year! I'm sure she feels abandoned! Last time I didn't visit for 6 months, she put a needle all the way through my finger!

(Yes, I live in Montreal. Yes, Detroit is 12 hours away. Yes, I'm still a member. It's a story, like everything else about me.)

Haha I didn’t name the sewing machine I use but I did name my dress form, my mom thinks it’s weird
Don't listen to your mom! It's important to have good communication with your sewing tools. Otherwise they'll turn on you, and hide from you under a pile of fabric!
It's also important to speak to your pet's like there human, so that the person in the other room is really confused when they walk in on your conversation about stealing dog food from the bin!

Haha confusing people who walk in is always fun :lolpony: And I agree! Plus when I’m using her a lot it feels rude not to call her something

Sewing Machines? Wow!

Just wondering, will you be creating any masks? Or what will you be creating?
