I have some so soft ponies I've had for a while that aren't in the best shape. Have any of you ever deflocked a pony? If so can I see and can you tell me how you did it?

I've deflocked a set for myself plus a few others that were beyond the help of any amount of cleaning.

How hard it is depends on the condition of the glue. Some have their flocking practically fall off and others take hours of scrubbing. The ones from the second set of So Softs are usually more difficult.

My method is to use the hottest possible tap water and just start scraping the flocking off. Next, I use pure acetone on cotton pads and swabs to clean off all the glue residue from non-painted areas. For the painted areas (symbols, blush and around the eyes), I use rubbing alcohol. Then I wash and let dry before checking for missed areas. (I do pop the head off and remove the tail first just so I can get as much as possible cleaned from around the tail hole and neck seam.)

Here are my group shots:

(It took quite awhile to find a Crumpet in poor enough shape to deflock.)

And here are some closer shots of a few with my flocked ones:

Wow, I just love how bright their colors are after they are deflocked. Pretty!

Oh wow, those deflocks are gorgeous!
Its crazy how much their colour changes.

OMG, Breyer600 your ponies are gorgeous! I have tried my hand at deflocking but haven't ever completely finished one. I find that getting the last bits of glue residue is the worst for me especially without damaging the paint. Do you ever have to touch yours up and do you put anything on them once they are done? Yours look so shiny and perfect, mine are kinda dull from the acetone (and probably glue residue I didn't get off). Any advice?

Hippity Hop and Twist look SO MUCH BETTER deflocked! :shockpony:

I know it's amazing how bright they are, but I suppose it makes sense with all the fluff on them otherwise they'd look washed out probably.

This is my old thread on a deflocking and repair job I did on one:

With warmer weather coming now as the seasons change (at least in part of the world) it's the perfect time to try to deflock one. I always use the acetone outside because of the amount of time you'll spend with the fumes. Pegasus ponies are annoying too. I have one I was meaning to customize but, her flocking was apparently not that loose like I thought. It helps if you can gather a few different sized scraping tools to work on either a large area or get into small crevices like the wings or curves on the unicorn horns.

I use hot water at first and scrape the flocking, if its not too effective I move to a boil and oxi-clean, lots more scraping and finally acetone. Then another bath, and possible touch ups with more acetone.

Whatever you use, yes, work outside and use gloves. :smilepony:

Thanks! I have done some damage to symbols (the white paint in particular seems quite fragile) but it's usually very minor, and since I don't have the painting talent to do a good job of touching them up, I just leave them that way. I do recommend rubbing alcohol for painted areas; though if you've got one with particularly stubborn glue, you may reach a point where you'll just have to declare it good enough and give up before you start causing major damage (my Bangles is like that) The first Truly I tried to deflock had glue that nothing worked on (pure acetone was barely budging it at all), and I currently have another partially deflocked Ribbon whose paint wants to come off with the flocking no matter what I use (including plain hot water). Thankfully, most aren't that stubborn.

The only thing I do after I'm finished is to make sure they get completely scrubbed with dish soap and once they're dry double check for any glue residue I've missed. I keep repeating that process until I'm satisfied I got everything that I can.

Deflocked ponies are beautiful! I just love the vibrant colors!

I have Twilight who was deflocked by a good friend of mine:

And Best wishes that I deflocked myself:

I may have to pull those ponies back out then. These pictures are re-inspiring me!
