I have heard people say that they painted a pony and then sealed it. What do you use for sealng. I am going to start working on my first custom and will be using paint and I want to make sure I do it the right way. Thanks for the help pony friends.

Matte acrylic polymer varnish. Pleeeease be sure to test the varnish on a small spot first though. My first custom was ruined because the varnish and the paint had some weird reaction and caused the paint to crack (Pearl Paint brand acrylic paint and Golden brand varnish). My second custom was ruined because the varnish caused the surface to become tacky (Liquitex brand acrylic paint and Golden brand varnish).

Now I use Liquitex brand acrylic paints and the matte varnish of the same brand. Good luck! I can't wait to see your first custom!

I'll second using varnish from the same brand. I've had the tacky reaction too.

You should also test that your "matte" varnish is actually matte, because my so-called matte is semi-gloss. It's not a big deal -- the pony ended up looking like china -- but it wasn't the effect I wanted!

Has anyone tried Testors Dullcote? I've used it on a doll head that is, I think, the same plastic as ponies are.

That's a problem I've run into with some of mine as well. I've reacently started using Testors Model acrylics (love them!! So smooth and the colors are bright with only one coat) But I haven't been able to find a sealer made by them. Not alot of call around here for model paints apparently, local craft store only carries enamel(big nono) and Wal-mart has the paints but not any sealer. le sigh.
Anywho, definatly try to keep the sealer and the paint from the same brand because they are formulated to go together, most will say somewhere in the instructions "use with *brand here* paints".

i use mod podge, it works great. there is a gloss one out though so don't buy it if you wnat matte.

Thanks!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for all of your help!!!! :D I will hopefully start working on it this weekend!
