Rapunzel in Blue is my 3rd custom (well, completed I should say) and the first time I've painted symbols.
Wasn't pretty the entire trip...I painted her display side symbol, and then painted her non display side symbol which looked much better, so I had to erase her display side symbol and repaint it (which now looks the best of any of the 3!). But I've wanted to do this custom for a loooong time.
Anywho, the inspiration partly came about from Disney's Sleeping Beuaty, when the fairies are arguing whether Aurora's dress should be pink or blue. And since Rapunzel is pink...I figured, why not blue?
First, I painted the display side symbol...
Then NDS...
Eek! You can see that the display side symbol was pretty sloppy...that was due to a failed experiment with stenciling. My reccomendation to all...NEVER use stencils! I tried to do it with masking tape, as that's what a friend of mine does for painting model trains, but...yeah. No good. So I erased the display side symbol and painted it again...
Much better! You can really see the difference...the castle lines are thinner, cleaner, more even...the old symbol unfortunately left some ingrained paint dots, like ingrained dirt...but it's not too bad. This custom was supposed to be an experiment anyway!
Some closeups...
The display side symbol I think looks the best...the NDS side's face now looks a little weird, but that flaw was not big enough for me to erase and go back to do the whole thing over again! Also, you can see some of the ingrained paint on the display side...the teensy dots where the old symbol used to be. I totally recommend to all...paint the NDS symbol first, in case you make a mistake! The NDS side is not quite as important. The 2 symbols I ended up with look slightly different, but the flaw is minor enough that I can live with it, lol. (and actually, *I* won't have to!)
So far bald Rapunzel...ironic, isn't it? So next...rehaired! (with RestoreDoll hair)
Pretty...but still not quiiite right...oh yes, the curls! Wouldn't be a Rapunzel without some stylin...so now, the 100% finished product!
Whew! Despite some minor flaws, I'm pleased with the end result. However, as I alluded to earlier, she will be for sale in some capacity. Possibly raffled off with some other great items.
She is also a custom that I will be repeating...I consider painting Rapunzel's symbols to be tediously annoying...and I want to get much better at it, so hopefully this Rapunzel in Blue will be the first of many to come. Much more affordable too!
