Ok, funny story. Well, it wasn't funny at the time, but now I'm so relieved I can laugh about it.

I was doing my taxes for 2017 and discovered I owed $19,000. I was freaking the flip out about it, because I've been out of work for over a year and that would clear me out. I thought something was wrong and knew it had to do with my severance pay amount. I had been through this once before. My financial company screwed me a few years ago and I ended up owing $10,000. I naturally assumed something similar had happened.

Anyway, I was going over the numbers, double checked everything and I couldn't see anything wrong. I went over it a third time with another person and we noticed I missed the most important check box, the income tax deducted amount, which cleared the amount owing and left me with a refund.

I've never been more happy to make a stupid mistake.

This is why I pay an accountant to do my taxes for me. It stresses me out much too much, I’d rather give that stress to someone who understands it better than me. Lol

Glad to hear things worked out okay! Always a good idea to double and triple check... especially with a second set of eyes that can catch what you missed! Yay for refunds!! :D

I'm the same as Skybreeze, though. I pay an accountant to do my taxes, too; they know their job, and everything regarding filing taxes, etc... Way less stress! (lol) If you can afford it, it's a very convenient/ease-of-mind option. ^_^;

My Poopsie does the taxes, she's the brains of the outfit. I hate filling out forms, I just go blind looking at them.

Sadly her pay raise put us in a higher tax bracket, meaning we pay even more. It sucks.

Tax season is when you realize that a pay raise can really suck. Lol I remember when my ex got a big raise and went up a lot into the next bracket and he was so sad when he saw his tax documents. Ha ha good times.... (it’s funny because we’re no longer together and I can now laugh about it rather than worry.)

I'm way too cheap to pay someone to do something I can do myself. The hard part for me is just getting all my receipts together. Putting in the numbers is actually the easy part. I use the free software which is really good (as long as you don't miss any boxes ;))

Crossing income brackets sucks. Sometimes it's better to stay in the lower bracket. I've been in the big bracket for quite a few years and it's deflating to see a third of your income disappear into the abyss.

I'd be making so many mistakes like that if I didn’t have the other half to do our taxes. Luckily, he’s a huge weirdo who loves numbers and paperwork! Good for you, adulting hard!
