I’d love some advice on how to make pony hair look nice. What products or techniques do you use?

Thank you!

I use a strait pin to comb the hair, (starting at the bottom of the hair and working up of course). But instead of a comb or a brush, you concentrate on only one point of detangling. It is possible to redirect curls to align, as well as convince fly-aways to join the rest of the hair this way.

And as always, just air-drying the hair while coiled around something else, does more than any kind of heat application, to re-style it for curls.
If I must use heat, to defrizz mostly, it's hot water. That way I know the temperature will never enter the range where acrylic hair melts.

Thank you so much for the advice!

I’ve got a couple different resources about pony hair if you’d like them!

When I do pony hair, I wash it with shampoo and then conditioner, gently combing through the conditioner and if the hair is frizzy letting the conditioner set for a while. Then when you wash it out, style it while it’s still wet. (This guide was where I learned to wash ponies and it talks a little bit about that)
Here are some hair styling tips Here Here and Here.

Also I’ll mention that while a LOT of people will use heat on hair (low temp irons or boiling it) you don’t have to. I never do because I fear heat’s effect on pony hair, it CAN melt if the heat is too high. I have gotten beautiful beautiful curls from just using straws and cold water alone. The only thing afaik you really need heat for is if you want a hairstyle to be set a certain way for longer or it can help defrizz hair but you don’t necessarily have to use it.

This is so helpful! Thank you! :)

does anyone use mineral oil instead of conditioner?

I wash with shampoo and conditioner and comb while the hair is slathered with conditioner. (Personal preference is Aussie 3 minute miracle - inexpensive for a good conditioner)
For curls I have a set of small foam curlers that work really well for tight ringlets! They were about $4 on Amazon (perfect for bumping an order over that free shipping threshold lol)
For simpler styles I just wrap the wet hair around the pony's neck & legs, wrap it with paper towel and tape it in place.
I have never attempted to use heat on my ponies aside from boil setting the curlers sometimes because I'm scared of melting it lol
