Pindot mold vs. Pony Cancer

I'm confused and trying to figure out which one spreads, and how to deal with both. Every forum seems to have great descriptions but not many pictures. Any pictures and advice are appreciated.

Right now in my herd I am seeing a few dark black little pin spots (I'm assuming that's pindot mold) and only a few brown large spots. What is that? Is that cancer? can that spread to the rest of my ponies? I'm confused. Pictures later.

Hope everyone is having a great night. :)

Pin dot mold can be removed with a little bleach and elbow grease. It looks exactly like it sounds, little black dots the size of a pinprick.

VDS or cancer are brown spots that are found on ponies. They are sometimes called age spots by vintage toy collectors too. They are rumored to spread to other ponies but it isn't true. They are caused by a bacteria that is already in that plastic when the pony was made. It grows in certain conditions. It needs humidity and warmth to grow. It "looks" like it spreads because ponies housed with those conditions present are all prone to it. It is not an infectious disease! lol

There is a good product for removing the stains available by Twin Pines called Removezit. You can buy if at www.twinpines.com

You can also email Nick Hill, the founder of Twin Pines, with any questions about VDS spots. He is an expert and is happy to answer any questions on the subject. :)

So Removezit works on brown cancer hey - I thought it just worked on pen marks etc - thats great if it does work on those horrible cancer stains! *trots off to look at website*

Does the magic eraser someone was talking about help with either of these problems?

I don't know about pin-dot, but it definitely doesn't work on cancer. I was pretty sure nothing did since it was the plastic itself changing?

Well, I've heard of products that can at least fade out the brown spots (like the aforementioned Removezit), but I've yet to have a pony with true "cancer" and I've never tested removezit. But the only thing about it is that the plastic is actually deteriorating so while it can look a little better nothing actually can "cure" the problem.

I have a question: When I asked about the pony cancer (excuse the term) I was told that it usually only infects G1's. What about the pin dot mold? And is it true that pin dot mold will spread where the VDS will not?

Well, maybe I have more then one question.

I noticed on a G3 Peachy Pie this small black dot. Its smooth but just to the side of it feels rough, like sand. I worry about the contact with my other ponies.

Like cancer, pin dot mold usually takes a good while to develop, so your new G3s are safe..... FOR NOW! MWAHAHAHA! ...*koff* Sorry, don't know what came over me.

If it's a spot that's not coming off, your Peachy Pie probably just has a bit of dirt or other foreign body from the factory stuck inside her plastic. Hasbro's quality control on the G3s isn't all that great, so it's unfortunately all too common. But the good news is that you can let Peachy Pie play with your other ponies without concern for their health.

Pin dot mold is easily distinguished from factory flaws because there's never just one. Your pony will look like it's breaking out in blackheads. I've never personally had pin dot mold spread to other ponies, but I've been pretty careful and I have the benefit of living in an arid climate, so I can't say that it doesn't happen.

Have you been hanging out with Dancing Pinky Pie BlushingBlue? LOL Rumor has it she is possessed. :winkw:

You know the spot did remind you of a blackhead. I took a photo and am attempting to upload my very first here.... bare with me. *Clears Throat*

I am happy to hear probably just a factory flaw. My three year old will be happy that Peachy doesn't have to stay quarantined. She just wasn't understanding hy Peachy Pie was not allowed to play with the others.

Hmm... That would explain the pea soup I vomited up earlier....

Rest assured, that little "beauty mark" is definitely not pin dot mold. With pin dot mold, the dots are much much smaller and there would be many many more of them. This is the best picture I could find off-hand to illustrate what pin dot mold would look like.

And it may be a pain, but pin dot mold is better than cancer (IMO) because you can "cure" it using household items, elbow grease, and patience.

Thank you so much BlushingBlue!! *Curtsy* You are a true gem!! I really appreciate the advise and picture. I tried searching at work today but was limited to what I was allowed o view. Couldn't get into any boards nor view pictures. working tonight on uploading photos. Think I have that one down now!! *Yippie*

Now..... If you head starts spinning around and around, then we may have an issue. ;)
