Foxy my new dog has been with me for almost a week now. She not wanting to eat or at least eat much in the way of food.

Our dog eat a different brand and I am having a hard time tracking down the brand My mom friend used so I can transection her over to our brand. Also her old owner used to make this "gravy" for her dog out of sweet potato and neck bone cook down in a pan. She gave me some to put on our food to get her to eat. She at the gravy but not the food. She does eat the treats I give her and will eat ham and cut up hotdogs. With the ham or hot dog is not much just a few pieces hot dog and maybe one piece of thin ham torn up in her food.

She went to the vet for her yearly check up and shots today. Clean bill of health. No heart worm or anything. The vet said stress is prob the cause.

She picked at the food a bit and eaten a little but it worries me to death that she not eating much. Vet said to give it time. I really don't want to make that gravy stuff It smells very bad and make me sick.
Doctor said to try canned pumpkin or can sweet potatoes.

Any advice would be great. I know she is adjusting to the house and being away from the larger group of dogs and her former humans. We are not have any trouble bonding and all but I just am worried.

Help ease my mind please. If she healthy could it just be the new environment or the dog food?

If the vet said she looked healthy I wouldn't stress too much. Maybe putting a little pumpkin or sweet potato on her food will help, or adding some water or canned gravy to the dry will entice her but some dogs are just not as interested in food as others. We had one that would just barely pick at the food bowl her whole life and the dog I have now would eat himself to death in one sitting if allowed. As long as she's healthy and it's probably fine, her appetite might improve as she gets used to all her new changes.

When Mr. Maki pulls this stunt on me at times I use baby food chicken and I also use the pumpkin and sweet potato. I also get a plate of food and lie down next to him and eat to make him feel like his pack leader is eating so hey maybe he should eat too. Sometimes that works especially if I use a plate of veggies I can share with him. I think a lot of love and patience with a gentle approach and no worry will help. The dog will pick up on your anxiety about the eating thing and that won't help. Play with your dog and see if you can bond. It will make a world of difference as this is all new to fur baby to be with you. Dogs miss their original owners and friends. They can get depressed over it. Cats too. When we got Chloe' she was really freaked out without her litter mates and it was hard for her. Even though your dog is older its gone through several transitions of home environments and that may be a little traumatic.

I can get this dog to eat if you are willing to do some work. I cook my dogs rosemary chicken stew. Take a whole chicken Boil it in a pot with chicken stock, poultry seasoning, and fresh rosemary sprigs. When it is done and cooled, debone and remove all fat. Chop the chicken up. Add to the chicken 1 bag of cooked brown rice, one bag cooked of frozen peas and carrots and add chicken stock. It makes a nice amount which can be refrigerated and taken out and served in portions over a few days. Just slightly microwave to take the chill out. For dessert give the dog a scoop of blue belle vanilla ice cream. My dog was not allowed to eat dog food and I cooked all her meals If you make your own chicken stock, refrigerate it until the fat hardens and rises to the top and remove all fat before adding it to the stew

I like everything Janis said but the Blue Bell Ice Cream. May I suggest Hagen Daz Vanilla Ice cream instead. It has no additives and chemicals and is pure food less processed if you are going to try ice cream with an animal. It is better for people too.

Oh my feelings are hurt. My Rottweiler was a marketing dog for blue bell. She crossed the rainbow bridge on July 30 2011. She was 14-1/2 years old. I rescued her at 7 weeks old. When miss Roxie was diagnosed with hip dysphasia at age 5, my vet told me it was so bad Roxie only had about 2 more years to live because the HP would become so severe she would not be able to stand or walk. And that is when I learned how to cook for dogs and go to holistic medicine. I threw the rymadyl in the trash. And you can see I doubled her life span. She ate better than half the children in America. In the end it was canine dementia that took her to Gods country. And I would cut my arm off if I could have just one more day with her. She was a trained children's therapy dog and the most special girl on the planet. I love you miss Roxie and will see you at the rainbow bridge. Love mom

That for the advice everyone. Pumpkin seems to be doing good.

As for making the chicken stuff I give you mad respect for that. However I know this sound strange but I have a horrible fear of dead animal bodies. Like chicken or whole fish etc. I can't even look at the thanks giving turkey. I buy all my chicken etc deboned or my mom gets a chicken and she has no trouble cooking and taking the meat off.

I can't touch hamburger meat either. I have always been like this.

But Foxy is eating more and doing good .

Thanks for all of the advice.

Sigh yea well before I got all chemical fearful I let my pug eat anything she wanted. She lived her full life span but still got cancer. So, I only allow the purest of foods for my Japanese Chin and he has lived longer but has a brain tumor. I don't know what the problem is, but I am with you I wish we could keep them with us for ever. Shhhhhh just don't tell her I am not a fan of Blue Bell Ice Cream since she loved it so much. Rymadyl is an awful awful medication. I tossed that in the trash too.

Oh I am so pleased something has been found to work. I think she just needed adjustment time. Pretty soon I am sure you will have her leaping for joy and eating perfectly after hearing the song about Pink Fluffy Unicorns and watching it with you on you tube. Her tongue may hang out longer, but she will certainly be totally content and eating her yummies.

So sorry to learn of the cancer. Sadly dogs have cancer in their DNA just like humans and Rottweilers are notorious for suffering from bone cancer. It is also true pure Breds do suffer more from health issues than mixed breeds. Look up the writer Ted Kerasote. He just published a documentary film on the Internet of his research to giving dogs longer lives and his previous books are wonderful reads. Merle's Door is an outstanding book I highly recommend. Besides diet we have to find holistic alternatives for vaccinations, flea control and heart worms. In her later years she suffered from incontinence and was prescribed phen phen, the diet drug that was killing humans. Slowly we are improving their lives and they deserve it

Yes they do and I too really don't like all these shots and stuff either. However, a rabid dog is not fair at all. I don't know what the alternative could be.
