Hey guys,

So, not too long ago Walmart had the first generation MLP DVD set for sale and I grabbed it in a heartbeat. I put the DVD in thinking "I can't wait to watch this!" but I totally could not sit through it. Truth be told, I really love the original pilot, Rescue from Midnight Castle. It's what I remembered most from my childhood. I must have watched it over and over again. I don't know how my mother got through it, but she did, bless her ;)

Anyway, I remembered bits and pieces from the show that came after and while I love seeing the ponies, I can't say I enjoy the writing as much nor the voice actors. In fact, any of the baby pony voices drive me nuts. I thought I would enjoy it way more than I do and I'm actually sad that I can't even sit through it. I'll keep it of course and display the DVD set proudly, but I can't help feeling like I'm betraying my generation of ponies. I am not a fan of the new style of ponies, but I love the stories, writing, and character development (I'm a writer). I love the new show more and I feel like such a traitor!

I also prefer the animation style and design of Midnight Castle over the TV show. Anyone else prefer one style over the other?

I'm also a huge fan of The Last Unicorn, I own the VHS, DVD, and signed copies of the book and graphic novel, and I can watch that movie anytime, same with cartoons like Flight of Dragons, or The Hobbit, but not the original MLP series. I'm so bummed.

Anyone else who grew up with the original series feel this way? What are your experiences?

I was thinking about buying the other MLP early gen series, but now I'm not so sure. I might see if I can test an episode or two out on youtube before I commit to anything. Anyone, would love to chat about it :)

Thanks fellow pony pals!

I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy rewatching the cartoon but I actually enjoyed it more than I expected to. Probably because I went in with low expectations. XD

I agree though, the animation in RaMC is head and shoulders above the tv series. I do wish they'd release an uncut version of RaMC and Escspe from Catrina.

We grow out of some childhood cartoons. It's only natural. I can no longer sit down and watch Smurf, Scooby-Doo, MLP Tales and Rugrats for example.

I can't remember if I've seen Escape from Catrina . . . Is that the one with Big Brother ponies? or am I thinking of another one? I've got it on the disc. I'll watch it

I actually didn't know there was a cut and uncut version until I watched the version I have! I was like: "wait a minute!??!! Where's Mr. Muchik's song!??!!"

That's very true. While I haven't grown out of the toys, I definitely can't watch some shows anymore. I can't do Scooby-Doo either and I think I found Rugrats annoying as a kid, so no chance now, lol :lolpony: I still totally enjoy some cartoons from my youth though. I recently bought Flight of Dragons and I'm still a fan. I still love the Hobbit cartoon as well. It's interesting the difference from show to show, either because of what age group it was geared towards or simply a difference in writing/producing. I enjoy new shows too, like I think the new My Little Pony is written well, especially the season before this last season where they had Dr Whooves and showed you more of Equestria. I also loved Avatar (though it was a bit childish for me sometimes) and the more adult version, Legend of Korra--- though the last season was "meh."

I'm still a cartoon lover: Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar as well and some anime like Princess Mononoke or Spirited away, but some of the ones from my youth, nope; not anymore.

What about you guys? Are there shows you can still watch now (other than MLP) that you can still enjoy? Do you like the new MLP show? :flutter2:

I love Flight of Dragons, but can't find it anyway. Where did you get it?

Out of all Bankin/Rass' animated films, this one gets the least recognition, when it's just as good and beautiful as The Last Unicorn and impo Much better and less boring then The Hobbit and LotR.

Have you seen their adaptation of Wind in the Willows and Black Beauty? Both are excellent films.

MLP and Friends is still one I can sit down and watch happily and somewhat recently bought the original Transformers for my daughter (and I) to enjoy.

Others are the Super Mario cartoons, Captain N, Mega Man, Legend of Zelda, Denver the Last Dinosaurand, Thunder Cats even though I no longer like it, my daughter enjoys King Arthur and the Knights of Justice.

Newer cartoons I enjoy are Phineas and Ferb, ATLA, didn't like LoK like I thought I would, TF Prime, new Thunder Cats which stayed true to the original while fleshing it out better.

@Leave a Whisper Here's a link to buy the DVD from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Flight-Dragons-Victor-Buono/dp/B002VA5A0C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466383491&sr=8-2&keywords=flight+of+dragons

I know I'm just going to have to buy them all again in blue ray, lol, but oh well. At least we have DVD for now.

I'm watching Escape from Catrina and I'm laughing because Catrina's voice actor is the same voice actor as Molly from The Last Unicorn. I agree the quality of this one is much better than the rest of the TV series as well, but RaMC is still my fave I think.

I thought LoK had a great start and then just kind of fizzled sadly. I haven't seen new Thunder Cats yet, I'll keep an eye out for it!

Oh thank you!

I think some shows just age better than others, along with changes in taste sometimes of course.

There's three shows from around the same time I remember enjoying as a child that I watched again a while ago, one, Around the World with Willy Fog, is still great, another, Mysterious Cities of Gold, is still very watchable (and has finally had a second series made which also wasn't bad) and one, Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, I found wasn't as fun to rewatch at all.

Strange how some things from stuff like that can stick with you sometimes, it's been a very long time since I saw the Care Bears movies but I still remembered very well some of the lyrics from one of the songs from the second one when it came up in discussion recently. (And annoyingly the song now won't stop going round in my head :lolpony: ).

Big fan of animation personally and, amongst other things, I do enjoy watching Friendship is Magic yes. :)
