You can purchase them by clicking the little + symbol next to your gems. You earn them once in a while in the game, too.

That's true of the normal gems. I'm talking about the heart-shaped ones.

oh sorry. I misread your post. The heart shaped ones are collected from your friends in the game. I suggest making a gameloft account in game (by clicking the blue square logo in the scroll menu) and then invite friends via facebook or by gameloft ID. I found some friends via a google search for "mlp gameloft id".

Oh, and I read that you need those heart-shaped gems for a quest which cannot be continued with bits or the regular gems, so if you get them save up until you need them for Scootaloo.

Another question: How do you get the most points in the ball game? I think the most you can get on a swipe/toss is 24 points, but what sort of swipe gets that for you? And do you get more points if you hit the ball farther away, or close up?

The most I've gotten is 30 it can be achieved by watching the ring around the ball and hitting the ball back just before it disappears entirely. At least..that works for me 75% of the time
