Mini Customizer Survey.....

I saw this thread was kinda old, but what the heck lol

1. What customizing "level" do you think you're at? "1" being beginner level, "10" being advanced. Say "0" if you've never made one. Please note that this has nothing to do with the amount of customs you've done, because I've seen some beginners that have made awesome customs!

I would give myself a 5, I think...I'm okay at most things, but not great at anything.

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Painting, definitely. I am happy with the way my sculpting skills are evolving, but I am consistently bad at painting.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

When you're rehairing, wet the hair. But don't just wet it with water...wet it with spray-on, leave-in conditioner...that keeps it workable longer, and of course helps protect the hair.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

Not at all!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

Well...I guess from looking at my customs it's pretty obvious I prefer G3s lol...but then G1s are hard to come by.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

I just walk away...eventually something cool pops into my head when I stop thinking about it for a while.

I would say about a 6-7 at this point.

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).
I need more practice with EYES!!!! ARGH!!!

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?
Yes! Don't compromise on hair. Stock up; remember that a $50 order with Dollyhair gets free shipping! Great hair is always worth the money.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?
No problem!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?
Definitely G3s because they're as common as dirt, lol.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)
I go through my baits and hair and see what G1 > G3 conversion I can come up with.

Heres mine.

painting, symbols and eyes.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?
Nope.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?
I wouldn't mind at all.

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?
I go with G3's because I love there body coloures. that reminds me that i need more older g3 baits.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)
If i don't have any idea's, i don't make any but when i do get idea's i have to write them down before i forget it.

1. What customizing "level" do you think you're at? "1" being beginner level, "10" being advanced.

- Between 5 and 8, depending on the custom.

2. What do you think you need more practice with?

- Sculpting, I don't like sculpting.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

-Molds. If you don't like sculpting like me, do as I do, use molds to repro resin horns and wings. Or if you're lazy and need some awesome stuff, go here Catalog

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

- Not at all. :)

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

- G3s, there are only so many G1s left so I prefer restoring them.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"?

- I leave the custom alone. When the time is right it will come to me again :)

Oh that is such a good idea! And I have the resources to do it!
I love this thread, I'm glad it was bumped!

Well, I am a "mini customizer" myself, so this is a good quiz for me! Ha ha!!! :]

1. What customizing "level" do you think you're at? "1" being beginner level, "10" being advanced. Say "0" if you've never made one. Please note that this has nothing to do with the amount of customs you've done, because I've seen some beginners that have made awesome customs! I would say a 2! I'm not anywhere near to being a "professional" customizer, but I do know how to rehair, and do some painting. Mostly because of my restoring. :]

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions). A lot!!! Ha ha!!!! :] I need to get better at painting, especially symbols. They come out very blocky. I should get thinner paintbrushes!

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us? Not really?? Ha ha!! Maybe that it's okay to bake ponies!!! I thought they'd melt, but if you don't cook them too long, they do fine!

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help? I would, only because I stink at customizing!!! ha ha!!! ;] I wouldn't be much help!!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s? G3s!! :]

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block) Drawing my ideas out! Sometimes I don't know where I want to go, so I draw what I think would look good on a pony. It saves time, in case you decide half-way through that something looks awful!!!!

Happy customizing!!! :]

1. What customizing "level" do you think you're at? "1" being beginner level, "10" being advanced.

I dunno, maybe a 5, I'm decent so long as I have a clear picture of what I want. But there are a few areas where I could use more practice. (onto question 2!)

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Color schemes, sculpting, coming up with original ideas. I'm great at converting g1 to g3 or vice versa but God forbid I have an original thought. hehe

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

Hmm, nothing that comes to mind. Though I have had luck with using porcupine quills for detail.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

*Shrugs* I doubt they would want my help.

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

Either, though G3's recently have been easier to get a hold of and I don't feel as bad chopping the hair off a decent G3 for customizing.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

hehe, time! Or a good old kick in the butt!

Ive made 1 custom, but it looked like a 3 year old did it, so Ima say 0, hehe

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Symbols, Eyes, steady hand
3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?
If you want a pearlized pony, use Sally Hanson Hard as Nail white nail polish. It doesnt get sticky and it looks really pretty

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?
Not at all! Though, Id be the one PMing people, lol
5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?
G3s, for I dont have any G1 bait

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)
I look through Aikarins customs, customs here, and in the brag arena/art to see if I get any ideas from there.

I'd say about a 5

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Hmm I can't make wings I need help with that other then that may be my brush work.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

No I don't think so I love making buns in the pony hair though!

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

No of cause not!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

I like to do eather!

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"?
Music just any old kind or manga!

I would say that I am a .5! I'm still fairly new to customs, and I am not very artistic. I can copy simple existing symbols, or come up with very simple original ones, but I am light years away from most other customizers.

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).
Everything! lol. I need to learn to gain a steadier hand. My eye painting could use more work, as well as over all artistic talent. Ok, I know....talent can't be learned.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?
The only tip I have to share is for ablsolute noobs. That is not to give up. People say that they could never make a custom. Trust me....if I can do it, so can you. :) Oh, that and don't use spray on ceramic sealant. It makes the pony sticky for a long time.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?
Sure they can PM me, but I don't know what help I could be other than to be a cheering section!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?
I will say that I prefer to customize G1's, but that's because I have never attempted to customize a G3.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"?
Nothing really. I just kind of have to wait until an idea pops into my head. Most times, it's just variations of Bluebelle that pop into my head. lol

Definitely a beginner, maybe a 3 at the most.. I haven't done very many...

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

EYES! I haven't actually attempted eyes yet, mostly I've just kept the old ones, and maybe touched them up / repainted the colours. My symbols aren't so smooth either...

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

Makeup sponges (with the sort of flat foam, not the kind with 'bubbles') are REALLY good for when you have to do a full body repaint - I've found that it comes out super smooth!

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

Well, I sure wouldn't mind, but, being new myself, I don't know how helpful I'd be.. LOL!

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

5. Definately G1's - less glue in the head/hair and easier to get the head off without having to cut the inside part out, so I get to put the heads back on without necessarily using glue.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

Motivates me huh? Well, I think that sometimes taking a break can be good! I get inspired from other's suggestions and also from everyday things.. movies, video games, nature etc...

I'd say probably an 8 or so. I haven't tried a lot of things yet on ponies but come from a pretty wide art background in general and like to try new things. Experiments have all gone well so far!

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Seems like a pretty common problem but I suffer from shakey hands as well. So symbols and eyes can be really hard for me, I never feel like my brush is small enough or my paint smooth enough. ::fist shake:: Also, I hate rehairing. >__>

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

Patience patience patience.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

Of course not! I'm not sure how much help I might be though.

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

I think they're about equal for me...it depends on the project!

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

Ugh, nothing? I just try to slog through it I guess.

i'd say between 6 to 7. it all depends on what i am making, each one is different. some are ok, some are awesome.

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

getting my paint the right texture to get a nice smooth look when painting symbol, eyes. i got better with the whole body paint. i would like the right brush size to do better work with the symbol and eyes. also reharing the head with fewer strands than i do, so i dont use too much hair or cause the head to be top heavy with hair.

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

no really. i use the needle method to rehair ponies manes. i use pony beads for the tail as a stopper instead of a washer. i dip g3 pony heads in boiling water to help soften or loosen the glue stick to the hair, makes it easier to remove the hair. i use nail tool kit for when i sculpt with clay. its cheap and the right tool can help you for whatever you need it for.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

not at all. if they have a question i can answer, sure, i will help.

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

either, but i tend to use g3s more. easier to get my hands on and can be cheaper to buy as a bait than a g1.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

i prefer doing a custom that someone wants, like for a swap. i haven't really had anyone commission me to make them a pony, other than obscuria. when i make a custom just because im bored or in a creative mood, i try to have something in mind to make. if i can't think of anything to make, then i dont make one or i put it aside and get back to it some other time.

Maybe a 5 or 6. I can do quite a few things decently, but I'm far from being a master at any

2. What do you think you need more practice with? (if you need specific help with something, please ask, and someone can answer your questions).

Detail work! Smaller symbols, more details on sculpting....my hands aren't always the steadiest and my patience isn't always the best, I guess. Oh, and EYELASHES!

3. Do you have any special tips/tricks/helpful tools you could share with us?

I don't do anything that is unique but I love Apoxie Sculpt/Clay and my rerooting tools! And I always cut a small piece out of the neck ring in a G3 to make putting the head back on easier.

4. Would you mind if a new customizer PM's you to ask for help?

Sure! Um, I mean, I wouldn't mind. LOL

5. Do you prefer customizing G1s or G3s?

G3s, definitely. I actually like the G1s for hair requirements, but I don't actually like to customize them because of their relative rarity.

6. What motivates you when you get in a customizing "slump"? (like writer's block)

Usually time away and starting a new project. Of course, I now have quite a few unfinished projects that I hit the wall on. :)
