This is one of my favourite dog stories. Hachiko was truly a very faithful friend. While the film is quite touching, it doesn't stick very closely to the actual event. It's quite Americanized. There's a beautiful manga of it which tells the story from the Japanese viewpoint, but I can't recall the author. I don't believe it's been translated into English. but even not knowing kanji, the art tells the tale well enough. Still though, definitely try to watch the movie. It's very sweet.

Hachiko himself is immortalized by a lovely statue in Shinyuba, quite near the exit where the dog waited, which has been renamed in his honour. On a little more gruesome note, he wasn't laid to rest, but rather stuffed. He's still on display at one of the museums near the station. He does have a monument next to his owner's grave though.

An interesting side note is that Hachiko was found to be one of only about 30 pure bred Akitas left in Japan. His loyality inspired a newfound interest in the breed and probably helped save it.

Here he is in his later years.

Heh. Can you tell I'm passionate about Hachiko? I never got to get by the Station while I was in Japan, but perhaps next time. There's always next time!
