I'm trying to figure out the best way to display my ponies. I mostly have ponies G3, but I have some from G1, G4, and G4.5 as well. Some are still in their packaging. I'm looking for a cheaper option than a glass cabinet, so probably shelves. What kind of shelves are best? I've heard some people use spice racks for smaller ponies? How do I protect them the best? Any info on the subject is appreciated!

I can provide more info or some pictures if needed.
Thank you all for your insight and help!

Sorry if there's already a thread like this!

To best protect them you'll need doors. You can use clear plexiglass and wood frame from a hardware store. I, personally, put my boxed ponies in back on a riser, with taller ponies next, then babies. You can honestly get floor to ceiling metal shelf hangers, or shorter, then buy the supports for the shelf depth you want. Most shelves you can even buy pre made, but cut clear plastic is my preference. As long as it doesn't get hot enough to melt. It takes away worry of and stain or color transfer. I recommend finding studs to screw the shelves in. I would say it's a must for the hinges on the doors. Otherwise, it's really pretty easy. Requires ability to use a power drill/screwdriver, level, stud finder, and measuring tape.

I love, love, love, storage, and shelving is part of storage to keep everything organized. Love it! Oh, one deep shelf at the highest level can work, otherwise try to go deeper towards the bottom or separate. Plus! Doors keep away dust.

I store most of mine in Zip-loc bags in a plastic bin. The ones I have on open display are vulnerable to dust, but I can't really put up enclosed cabinetry or anything so...

I have designs on making custom carry/storage cases - basically, homemade equivalents of the Carry Case and Collector's Case - for a more protected "display" (in quotes because the ponies themselves are hidden from view). I already made one for Megan and Sundance, and I have plans on one for the Flutter Ponies.

Mine are on bookcases I got from Walmart, just the plain ones and I made risers out of some foam I covered with fabric so I could put them at least 2 rows deep. Doors would've been nice to help with dust but I didn't bother with them, seemed like too much of a hassle. Although that also means people can touch them when they come to see the pony room  Lookie, no touchie people!

I have some of my displayed ponies on a homemade riser so that they can share a shelf with the Flutter Ponies without being hidden. The riser platform is strips of cardboard, with support pillars made from lengths of soda straw that have been hot-glued into the caps for Krazy Glue storage tubes.

Be careful with plastic baggies, they can harbor moisture and foster mold growth ;)

I have a number of different display methods in my pony room:

Maintenance:

- A dehumidifier set to "basement" (moisture is bad for ponies!)
- A hepa air filter unit (for dust, mostly)
- Temperature control (I tend to keep it pretty cool)
- Blocked off window / sunlight (it's behind the plush tower)
- No air fresheners / sprays / chemicals of any kind

Hope that helps! ;)

I live in bone-dry Southern California, so moisture isn't one of my big concerns. And I make sure the ponies are dry when I slip 'em in the bags, so that should be good, right?

I don't have the luxury of a pony room myself, all my stuff is in my bedroom

It helps a bunch! I was wondering about dehumidifiers since I live in a hot humid climate!

Regardless of climate, I'd be concerned about any kind of moisture being not only sealed in with a pony, but any humid environment for ponies, especially with vintage or more valuable ones. Mine that are in storage (all of my G3's and half my G4's) and are loose are wrapped in acid-free tissue paper, so their hairstyle is protected and they don't come into contact with one another, and any in baggies of any kind have the baggie left open a bit for ventilation and no potential petri-dish effect.

Some of my childhood ponies were permanently damaged by poor storage over time, not about to let that happen again <3

Some collectors put silica gel packets in with any pony in a baggie, too.

Even in the dry winter here, I'm emptying an entire bucket of water from the dehumidifier every week. ;)

Moisture is a huge issue here. Black mold is the biggest deal. I have fans that vent out the roof and come on automatically to keep humidity down. What saves us is we don't get much over 90 or under 40.

You could do what I did and just put them on top of a cabinet and never dust them and just let them stand there in their own filth.

That's how I raised yo and you seem okay. Mainly. Sorta.

Most of my collection is stored, but I have one shelf stuffed full of ponies, fakies and some assorted small plushies. They're just my faves, for whatever reasons. Most have a fun little story or were bought for me by someone I love dearly.

My main collections are on my bookcases. But a good bit is stored.

Eeeee! This topic is so exciting to me because after all these years, I might have room to display some of mine within the next year once we move. It’s so inspiring to see all your pictures and ideas and dream of how to eventually display them!! Mine are all stored away for now also.
