Hole poking?

I was wondering what is the best way to poke a clean hole in a pony? I'm working on a kitty and need wisker holes. Has anyone ever done this?
 
Take a needle and a pair of plyers and use the plyers to jam the needle in the pony's snout?
 
Thanks so much! I was so worried about trying something without anyone's advice
