Hello,
I am finally starting to post after a few months of lurking… I grew up playing with G1 ponies intensely (at a time when “collecting” was reserved for serious adult toys like Breyer models). I got my first MLP around 2nd grade, was immediately an enthusiast, and had whole worlds created with my best friend within a year. We continued to play regularly into early high school, then I left my ponies carefully stored away and went to boarding school. There they stayed for more than 25 years…until I recently retrieved them as my parents were cleaning out their house. I discovered this site while researching what to do with them (I also have some Breyers, and initially planned to sell everything to some child who would enjoy them as I did). I was quite surprised to discover my beloved ponies are now collector’s items, but getting reacquainted immediately rekindled my sense of play. Plus, I had touched on early customization ideas with my Breyers as a teen and was drawn in by possibilities for MLPs! So now I don’t want to part with my favorites…and may want to learn some restoration or customizing methods eventually… I doubt I will become a true collector (my toys were always either for playing or for creating) but will definitely hold onto the ones that most appeal. Unsure if I will sell ones that have become valuable, especially non-favorites. I am not a big computer person, so this will be my first online community participation (and I may post inconsistently or poorly). I do miss the pony worlds created with friends, and love the energy here! I will likely start trying to assess value soon (at level of whether any of mine should be set aside for true collectors or at least restored with greater care versus returned to play or even used to practice restoration or customizing techniques!)
I have not yet decided on later generations - I think mine went into storage about the time of G1/G2 transition so only G1s are familiar. Others look strange, but I expect the proportions will normalize over time. For now, it is the G1s I am rediscovering. Any tips on restoration or evaluating are appreciated!
In non-pony world, I live in Las Vegas with 2 Italian Greyhounds; have a background in medicine but switched to working outdoors at a local park post- pandemic; and enjoy camping + hiking, ice skating + dance, arts + crafts, and trying new things. I am delighted with all the wonderful pony community activities I have been quietly observing so far!
