:ponylove: Have you seen the MLPTP's Pony Tutorials & FAQ? :winkpony:

Hi everyone!

One of my big goals since taking over ownership of this site in late 2019 has been to provide a thorough MLP library of tutorials and information that any collector, fan, artist, or guest can benefit from. Whether you're new to the pony world, or a veteran, I would love to establish a wealth of information and valuable references that everyone can use freely and share.

Now that our Tutorials and FAQ library is filling up, I'm asking for YOUR help, your feedback, and your suggestions. <3

  • What tutorials or references would you like to see added that are not there yet?

  • Do you spy any broken links, incorrect information, or other errors in any of the threads?

  • Do you have any information to add to any threads that you think would be beneficial to others? You are welcome to submit your own tutorials, too!

<3 MLPTP Pony Tutorials & FAQ <3
(Currently located on the front page near the top)

There are some BIG, BIG BIG things in the works here at the MLPTP, and coming soon! We can't wait to share it all with you, as it has all been many months in the making. But until those things are ready to launch, help us make the MLPTP the best pony community it can be! <3

Thank you!

There are definitely plenty of things that are missing.
  • Personally speaking, I keep forgetting that the links to other resources is under "How do I Identify My Pony?", so when I go to look for it I end up searching the internet instead. Perhaps having a centralized masterlist of links could be something to consider?
  • I recently made a post asking about how to re-shape pony bodies, particularly glitter ponies. The Pony Preservation Project does have a blurb about re-shaping deformed ponies, such as with crushed legs etc., but I've noticed that "how to take care of glitter ponies" is often a missing topic. (DracoKat helped me out with this one and suggested a blow dryer, I'll be trying it soon.)
  • You also have information on how to style a pony's hair in the "clean my pony" section, but a general "how to clean the body" is missing.
  • ....Or just a general hair washing guide? There's styling, I can understand if you'd consider that to be it.
  • Bringing in some information about how to take care of G2 ponies would be greatly appreciated as well, since they have some unique gimicks.
  • On the note of gimmicks, some may appreciate a guide for making new flutter pony wings, or replacing summerwing wings.
  • Or how to replace Twinkle Eyes' eyes.
  • This one's definitely more high-effort, but making text versions of guides where there are currently only videos would be appreciated. Just right above or right below the video.
  • We have how to remove a pony's head, but how to reattach it would be helpful too.

And a couple of MLPTP-specific things:
  • Of course I would still like a list of the automatic titles, probably hidden in a spoiler as well.
  • How to set custom titles and a description of when you're able to. There are requirements you have to meet for this, aren't there?
  • How to change your MLPTP theme.

Also as kind of an aside, one of my G1 ponies rattles. o_o I think something in her hoof broke, it's squishier now than the others. Do they have weights or something in their hooves?

How about a page of warnings- like “do not use oxyclean on SS or glitter”…. Warnings people may not think about that may destroy their ponies?
Also a list of ponies that should not be sunfaded since I can never figure out if it’s safe to sunfade or not. I almost destroyed my mimic this way

And speaking of oxyclean- warn people to put oxyclean after boiling water and not before otherwise it will overflow. I made that mistake!

I would like to take a moment to thank @MustBeJewel for the almost two years+ of extremely dedicated and hard work and research of well informed and trusted information that it took to compile the FAQ sections.

This FAQ section has been in the works for an extremely long time and we are still working very hard to work on it and add more information.

This is why @MustBeJewel has reached out for ideas. While leaving responses please remember to be kind and thoughtful.

The MLPTP Team do all the work here behind the scenes for free and in our “spare” time. Thus making some things take a bit longer than others. We’ve always had a FAQ Suggestion Box that doesn’t get utilized. Because of this Jewel made a post here to unveil the hard work put into the FAQ (which just 6 months ago had no content) together.

As though any of you truly have ‘spare’ time! Thank you @MustBeJewel for all you have given to make this forum a very wonderful and welcoming place. Thank you as well to all the mods working their ‘MOD magic’, organizing events, taking care of troubles and just generally awesomeness. @Gingerbread @CJ Thimble Bright @Natsu chan @Sassarazzmadazzles and especially, @Skybreeze , who has been available on here so frequently.

Chill out, Sky. Nobody's saying they don't appreciate it.

I know what kind of work goes into making lists and guides like these, and I know the importance of feedback too. I've been known to make such things myself, having once gone through and made a fully translated in-depth guide for a Japanese game, among other such projects. I would help out in making these guides if I was more experienced in taking care of ponies myself, so the best way I can help right now is just to bring to light some of the easily missed items I myself have had trouble with.

And yes, the suggestion box goes unused. It's bad timing, usually when I notice it I can't think of any questions. This just happened to come up while I was thinking about it.

Lots to catch up on here! Let me see.....

There are definitely plenty of things that are missing.
Exactly why we are now asking the community for input :)

  • Personally speaking, I keep forgetting that the links to other resources is under "How do I Identify My Pony?", so when I go to look for it I end up searching the internet instead. Perhaps having a centralized masterlist of links could be something to consider?
Which kinds of links would you want in a master list? Just identifying resources, or....?

  • I recently made a post asking about how to re-shape pony bodies, particularly glitter ponies. The Pony Preservation Project does have a blurb about re-shaping deformed ponies, such as with crushed legs etc., but I've noticed that "how to take care of glitter ponies" is often a missing topic. (DracoKat helped me out with this one and suggested a blow dryer, I'll be trying it soon.)
If you could document your experiment with photos and write down what you did and what happened, we can easily make that into a tutorial page for how to correct legs without damaging glitter, that way members would be able to use that information in the future.

  • You also have information on how to style a pony's hair in the "clean my pony" section, but a general "how to clean the body" is missing.

  • ....Or just a general hair washing guide?
What kind of information do you think should be included in how to wash pony hair? I'm not clear on what specifics would be needed that aren't already in many of the videos.

Are you able to provide any of these resources for us to use? That would be extremely helpful.

  • This one's definitely more high-effort, but making text versions of guides where there are currently only videos would be appreciated. Just right above or right below the video.
I am afraid I am already at maximum high-effort here, just generally speaking. I devote an enormous amount of time, effort, and resources just in running the TP alone, not to mention providing this kind of content for the community. ;) All I can say is, I do the best I can for all of you. <3

I will discuss these with the mods :) The second one I can easily plan on adding, but the third is involved in some upcoming content and is unlikely to be utilized at this time.

Also as kind of an aside, one of my G1 ponies rattles. o_o I think something in her hoof broke, it's squishier now than the others. Do they have weights or something in their hooves?
That would depend which G1 it is in terms of what parts might be inside, but it's usually the tail washer, even if the tail still seems firmly in place. Then again, I've found many a strange thing inside a pony over time..... You never really know!

How about a page of warnings- like “do not use oxyclean on SS or glitter”…. Warnings people may not think about that may destroy their ponies?
Warnings are put in bold red in every tutorial where they apply-- do you think would it be more beneficial to have a single thread of "DO NOT's" ?

Also a list of ponies that should not be sunfaded since I can never figure out if it’s safe to sunfade or not. I almost destroyed my mimic this way
We can definitely work on researching this--feel free to PM me what you know about it, and I can start from there. :)

And speaking of oxyclean- warn people to put oxyclean after boiling water and not before otherwise it will overflow. I made that mistake!
The instructions for OxyClean already state "do not heat or boil" on the packaging, which is the consumer's responsibility: Instructions
I will skim through the tutorials and add this as it applies, as I did not realize it was not recommended by the manufacturer. Good catch!

Thank you for mentioning this and for your kind words, @Skybreeze. <3 Even though I've been the owner since 2019, I've been working on here for decades now. The MLPTP is a very ingrained part of me, and a community that I strive to provide for and protect. I find it hard to put into words just how much goes on that members never see on a day to day basis.

Some of that will be very visible, very soon, however! ;)

That's very kind of you Tak, thank you. :) We do not hear those kinds of things very often, and it is always taken to heart.

Chill out, Sky. Nobody's saying they don't appreciate it.
I understand that you are trying to contribute constructively and for the betterment of our resources I do appreciate that, but I am going to have to ask that you not disrespect @Skybreeze or any of the moderators by saying things like this. This community is here because people like @Skybreeze heavily volunteer their time and effort behind the scenes, and I will not condone anyone talking to her or any other community contributors, members, or regulators in this way. Thank you for understanding.

And you are correct, no one in this thread has stated that they do not appreciate the MLPTP and the work that goes into it. But by and large and over the course of time, the work we do, for free, for all of our members, very often does go without any thanks or appreciation--and I say that as someone who has worked on the TP since 2005. We (myself and the mods) openly accept that fact as the caretakers of this community, and we certainly don't require any accolades, but by the same token, she is not wrong.

Selecting quotes is difficult on my phone, so apologies for not having quotes.

@MustBeJewel - I think as long as warnings are loud and clear on each tutorial, maybe front and center, would help? I destroyed a magic message pony because I had no idea it couldn't be used with oxyclean until I made that mistake too. I don't recall seeing that warning on the Preservations page or anywhere else. Trial and error on my part.

As for sunfading ponies, or anything else, I will be glad to help out with researching! I know Mimic fades painfully easily by my experience (I can provide pics of the damage I did). Also I recall hearing that some burn. I just don't know who since I hear warnings that simply says "Some ponies burn when sunfading" but don't have a list of which ponies. But again, I will be happy to dig deeper to know for sure!

I know taking care of a site like this, moderating, as well as adding a massive library of information, is a huge undertaking. I appreciate all your efforts as well as every volunteer mods and generous members of the site. I will help where I can and feel free to reach out to me if you need an extra hand!

Personally I think a list of DO NOT’s, maybe with links to the relevant threads, would be a great resource for newer members asking for help.

I'm sorry that happened to you! As I go back through the tutorials, I will definitely do all I can to draw attention to any warnings.

Your help would absolutely be welcome! :D I am happy to err on the side of caution whenever possible, and I have definitely heard the same kinds of things you have, but having a definitive list would hopefully protect a lot of ponies from being damaged, and protect collectors from disappointment.

Thank you <3 We really hope for it to be an easy-to-use body of reference that anyone, at any stage of collecting, can benefit from.

And I say this both to you and to everyone: Any time you have a tip, a tutorial, an idea, anything you'd like to share with us to help improve any facet of the site, we always appreciate and welcome your help.

Noted :)

What kind of information do you think should be included in how to wash pony hair? I'm not clear on what specifics would be needed that aren't already in many of the videos.
Good question. ID links would be good, I am pretty sure Lavendar Lagoon also doubles as a G2 ID site so that would naturally already be included (but I would have named it too since they have some G2 care tips), but I would think other trusted care sites such as the Pony Preservation Project would be good.

I had briefly thought about suggesting things like hair resources as well, but I feel like that would be unnecessary, personally. Having hair resources in the rehair thread seems perfectly good to me. That said there are more than I realized! I will be revisiting that soon.

If you could document your experiment with photos and write down what you did and what happened, we can easily make that into a tutorial page for how to correct legs without damaging glitter, that way members would be able to use that information in the future.
Ah, yeah, absolutely I can do that.

Wow I must have looked right over top of that like five times!

What kind of information do you think should be included in how to wash pony hair? I'm not clear on what specifics would be needed that aren't already in many of the videos.
Honestly, just really basic stuff. Things like "yes you can use shampoo and conditioner", maybe with notes about if there are any you shouldn't use such as medicated shampoos. I might suggest adding a tip on how to hold your pony while you wash them, to avoid water getting inside their hair, if that's important. To be honest these things were super intimidating to me early on, since their hair isn't natural hair I wasn't sure if it was okay to use shampoo.

Are you able to provide any of these resources for us to use? That would be extremely helpful.
The Lavendar Lagoon can help with some of the G2 items, you'll have to check the dropdown for the full list: http://www.lavenderlagoon.com/customizing--restoration.html
Honestly I have a magic motion G2 who's head doesn't sit right and mechanism seems weak... If I work up the courage to try and work on her then I'll be glad to contribute my experience with it.

Mostly I've seen guides for TE eyes and wings floating around, I'm afraid the most I can do is track some of those down for you as I haven't any experience doing these, myself.

I am afraid I am already at maximum high-effort here, just generally speaking. I devote an enormous amount of time, effort, and resources just in running the TP alone, not to mention providing this kind of content for the community. ;) All I can say is, I do the best I can for all of you. <3
Alrighty, I understand. Thank you for that~

....Welp. I did try to check before I posted, guess I missed that too. Thanks

I will discuss these with the mods :) The second one I can easily plan on adding, but the third is involved in some upcoming content and is unlikely to be utilized at this time.
Ooohhh! How exciting! I'll be looking forward to it, for sure.

I see! This one's a Fizzy, I wouldn't think she'd have anything special in her foot if it wasn't standard. I guess her one squishy foot is a coincidence, then!

I understand that you are trying to contribute constructively and for the betterment of our resources I do appreciate that, but I am going to have to ask that you not disrespect @Skybreeze or any of the moderators by saying things like this. I understand. It wasn't my intention to be disrespectful but I will try to be more mindful of that.
I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds by saying so, but for my part it came across like Skybreeze was being passive-aggressive, or was getting irritated with us.

This is really cool of you!! :D It does get a bit troublesome having to google around to different sites to fill in gaps on how to do something. It doesnt bother me too much but it does take a while to find some things. I really appreciate you and everyones contributions to try and make a comprehensive guide. <3

Something I would really love is information on G2 pony restoration since theres very little out there.

Also, maybe on some guides list which generations its appropriate for? I wonder if something traditionally done on g1 would work well on every generation?

Was there anything on oxi clean? I may have missed it, but some potential side effects of using would be helpful. I seem to always hear different things. Like it making the plastic harder or if it whitens over time, which version of oxi clean to use, etc.

I think the lists of do nots is a good idea just in case someone doesnt read the whole guide maybe theyll see a " Do Not" thread and be more inclined to properly read it? Then again vice versa, maybe someone doesnt see Do Not due to being focussed on a specific topic, and in turn sees a warning first in a guide.

I completely understand that these things do take time and research so theres certainly no rush and all the time and effort is much appreciated! If theres anything I can contribute Id be glad to help!

This is an awesome wealth of knowledge! Thank you tons @MustBeJewel! It’s great when there is a centralized location for just about every pony question. I remember having so many book marks and then sites phasing out and groups gone and what not etc. It’s great to have just about all you could need with room to grow in an easy to access well laid out and super detailed format. Thank you!!
:orangeheart: :butters:

Thank you for putting together all the information like this! The MLPTP and other places are really useful for pony information and knowledge and has been very helpful to me since before I joined here. I used the tutorials (even read those old links I somehow found that I was told were very secret and shouldn’t be used due to being out of date methods) and I read all the updates too. Thank you for all the work that goes into this everybody :flutter2:
Also a list of ponies that should not be sunfaded since I can never figure out if it’s safe to sunfade or not. I almost destroyed my mimic this way

I’m sure I once found a list gathered over at the arena but since I’m not a member, pictures wouldn’t load
What kind of information do you think should be included in how to wash pony hair? I'm not clear on what specifics would be needed that aren't already in many of the videos.
Now I think about it, I remember reading somewhere about some pony tinsel being fragile, those of the Princess Ponies exactly. When I washed Princess Misty I didn’t realise. Her perfectly purple tinsel now flakes. It may have been unavoidable though as the hair did need a wash
(Not the best pictures of Misty’s tinsel when I found her and washed her but a link is here for the thread anyway)
I’m happy to try to get closer pictures of her tinsel currently in my lightbox if needed:smile:

  • Do you have any information to add to any threads that you think would be beneficial to others? You are welcome to submit your own tutorials, too!

I will be doing some deflocking in the near future, and I use certain tools that aid me along the way, tools that aren't listen on the current deflock thread. Do you mind if I photograph and document my personal process and make my own tutorial and you can can decide if you want to use it or not?

Every contribution helps! I wish I had more time to research everything, but being only one person, any leads are always appreciated.

One thing about text conversation is that it can be really hard to have your tone come across the way you mean it to, I think that's something all of us have had trouble with at one point or another. I can tell you though, for what it's worth, that @Skybreeze, the rest of the mods, and myself, are consistently always coming from a place of well-meaning and of great care for the community. Even if we face frustrations, we still speak from a place of always trying to care for the community and make the TP the best we can. :)

Something I would really love is information on G2 pony restoration since theres very little out there.
Can you tell me what, specifically, you'd like to have available for G2's? Eye gems, rehairing....?

Also, maybe on some guides list which generations its appropriate for? I wonder if something traditionally done on g1 would work well on every generation?
Generally, I use the exact same approach on every generation, with the exception being for certain gimmicks like So Softs, glitter symbols, metallic paint, etc. I will go back through and see if there are any specific tips I can add to the existing tutorials. :)

Was there anything on oxi clean? I may have missed it, but some potential side effects of using would be helpful. I seem to always hear different things. Like it making the plastic harder or if it whitens over time, which version of oxi clean to use, etc.
I haven't heard any of those things about OxyClean, but if you can PM me sources I'd really like to know. My overall impression is that Oxy is generally safe for ponies.

I completely understand that these things do take time and research so theres certainly no rush and all the time and effort is much appreciated! If theres anything I can contribute Id be glad to help!
Absolutely! Feel free to share any links, videos, articles, anything that may help flesh out our growing knowledge base ;)

I'm so sorry to hear that, but photos would definitely be helpful. I haven't really heard much about disintegrating tinsel before, so that would be good to explore.

It’s just the colour coating that came off so we shouldn’t have too much to worry about. I’ll PM some pictures once I take some soon :princessmisty:

@MustBeJewel A list of events would be great!! :D

Also to answer the previous questions. As far as G2. I mean more of, does the vinyl play friendly with the same methods as g1 and specifically how to work with mechanisms. Such as light up ponies, which i imagine are more than difficult to work around. I doubt they can get wet, which if so maybe should be a listed warning? Even if they dont work it could reasonably cause rust or internal battery corrosion? Also, how to remove the head and fix tail rust for those ponies since electronic elements are inside. Maybe if someone or I ever get our hands on one in desperate need we can take pictures of how it looks inside. Id be glad to donate pictures if I find myself with something to offer. Im going to clean out my Hip Holly in a month or so when i happen to get the time, would pictures be helpful? She doesnt have any mechanisms but If pictures of the type of washer and tail clamps are helpful im happy to take pictures. Im also happy to do some non harmful tests on my g2s to provide information.

I cant remember now where I heard that Oxiclean can cause ponies to harden. When looking up articles on how to fix my stained Surprise it was written somewhere as a warning but I cant find it anywhere else. Its possible they could be mistaken but I'll try to find it again. Also a disclaimer for Oxiclean causing neon hair, especially Surprises neon yellow to leech out dye is a good warning :0.

Something I had forgotten to mention that ive always wanted is, paint recommendations? For when restoring or customizing ponies. Repainting eyelashes especially. Some g1 ponies have a more grey tone eyelash as well as g2s can have lots of colors. Brush size for eyelashes and paint recommendations would be nice. :D I also help restore vintage action figures which have paint recommendations for hair color matches, etc. The shop I used to use has since stopped selling paint. It was a helpful resource tho while it lasted and I thought it might be nice for others to have a list? :3

Thanks for listening <3
