So I'm sure some of you have seen this, but for those who haven't...

Apparently, Hasbro has a contract with Little, Brown and is releasing this book and others.
The program also will include an original storybook, Under the Sparkling Sea by Mary Jane Begin, an author-illustrator based in Hasbro’s home state of Rhode Island. She had been working with Hasbro on the book before Little, Brown—which, coincidentally, had published Begin in the past—came on board. The book introduces a new world, called Aquastria.
Here's the full article, if anyone's interested.
I'm loving that cover art, and I'll probably have to buy the book. Aquastria looks too good to pass up. Maybe we'll get a TV episode, too.
I'm hoping this means sea pony brushables, or at least blind bags! I read on another site the plot involves the "sea ponies" fighting with the "mermares". I'm wondering what the difference is. That blue one looks like a seahorse.
Anyone have thoughts or info?

My sister thinks that the Sea Ponies will look kinda like seahorses while mermares are like the ponyville style sea ponies

Mermare?

All we officially know is from the publisher's press release, which already got covered here.

Faust said she wanted to do a sea pony episode, but it never got done when she was working on the show. That doesn't discredit it happening in the future, which is still a possibility.

There's a DVD that's been made that's movie-length (still sitting somewhere, unannounced in any way), so perhaps a straight to DVD Aquastria movie? Or perhaps it'll be in season 4. We already know the plots to all but 4 episodes of season 3, so I doubt that it's going to pop up in this season.

This looks awesome! I love the sea pony, very majestic. <3 I can't wait for this!

I second (third?) the notion of sea ponies = regular Sea Ponies like Sealight and Wavedancer, while mermares = Fancy Mermaid Ponies and G3.5 Mermaid Ponyvilles like Baby Sea Princess, as Phekzhen shows. It's what makes the most sense in my mind.

Other than that, the prospect of Sea Ponies in any kind of G4 continuity is awesome. I don't know if this could mean more brushables or blind bags, though, since so far it's just a book... And MLP's track record with adapting different media into the main line is still a bit sketchy. BUT we do have Lauren Faust's intention, and I find it hard to believe that she wouldn't have given the idea to someone else working in the show. With that in mind, I can see, this turning into a toyline "event" like the wedding or now the Crystal Empire, and in that case, it would be very likely that we got our G4 sea pony/mermare fix. I'm still a bit skeptical, but it's still a likelier prospect than getting any characters from G1 on the show.

By the way, I love the drawing style in this. Reminds me of G1 somewhat, can't put my finger on exactly why, though.

Considering Hasbro lost all their G1 copyrights (besides AJ and Spike), most G1 characters aren't going to directly crop up in G4. There's some "nods" to them with background ponies, like Medley.

I'd like to see more 80's ponies in the show. They've referenced the time period, at least.

Yeah... I'd like to see where they actually stated that officially, or actual proof, because I don't really buy it. (Not saying I don't believe you, of course! :p) Especially not after seeing what happened with Transformers after the Beast Era.

Basically, the same thing happened there - Hasbro lost the rights to names like Bumblebee, Shockwave and Jazz during that period, because they didn't use them. When they decided to end the Beast Era in the early 2000s, they had to reacquire the names, and they eventually managed to do so, in the meantime sometimes sticking a prefix name before the Transformer's own to avoid lawsuits, like "Autobot Jazz".

If they so willed, I'm sure they could easily do that with MLP - just register a copyright for "My Little Pony Fizzy" instead of the simple name "Fizzy" and you'd be good to go. Plus... Spike and Applejack were the only names they could secure? Really? Those are pretty common names (thus hard to secure), plus G3 was littered with G1 names here and there. Bowtie, Moondancer, Butterscotch, Cotton Candy, Morning Glory... Bowtie, for example, was last used by G3 in 2007, and I'm sure 3 years is too short a span of time to lose copyrights for a name.

All I'm saying is that the more I think about it, the more the whole thing just sounds like an excuse. From what I can see, Hasbro is intent of building a legacy for MLP like they did with Transformers, since it finally grasps the scope of what they have in hand... But their basis is G3, not G1 (Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash...), so they're not going to go through the trouble of trying to bring its characters back. Not because they can't, but because they don't really want to.

...Which is a shame, in my opinion. A lot of concepts and characters in G1 had so much potential in a setting like G4. Well, at least now we have this little window of opportunity for sea ponies, so here's hoping it gets somewhere!

I really hope I'm not bothering anyone with these spiels of mine. I do try to make them interesting to read, at least...

I liked your spiel PrincessLio :D I wish I had that much to say about things, often I feel like I don't say enough in my posts.

I agree with you I really don't buy into it myself. They used Applejack in 2003 line and many other 2003 names. I think they didn't want to invest in using those names because they weren't "unique" enough for them.

I want seaponies 0_0 let us wait and see what will happen.

I'd love to see sea ponies make a comeback :)

Regarding names and copyrights . . . "Autobot Jazz" is a good example of how Hasbro could easily copyright names they've "lost."

"Firefly the Pegasus"

"Glory the Unicorn"

"Cotton Candy the Pony"

They've actually already done this with two characters--Spike's copyright is "Spike the Dragon" and Rarity's is "Rarity the Unicorn".
