In regards to the 35th anniversary retro ponies, are they effectively identical to the original G1 ponies? I've tried comparing pictures and they look quite similar, are they even made of the same material? Fairly new to all this so unsure if they have made them slightly different or not. Thanks in advance! :)

I can't vouch for all of them, because I only have a handful, and not their og counterparts. But some of them, no.

The first set of rainbows are scented, which causes them to discolor quickly and gives Sunlight a greenish tinge. They remedied this with a non scented re-release.

The stripes on the unicorns are wider, and Sparkler has two versions. One with extra stripes, and one without.

The plastic is harder on the Basic Fun.

There is also the stamps on the hooves. They have the newer date, and some have Bridge Direct, while others have Basic Fun.

Twinkles the Cat has a more detailed and updated look.

Rainbowdash has her hair stripes in a different order.

You can also check on youtube for better comparisons. Hope this helps.

I agree with Leaveawhisper. They really aren’t the same. They won’t ever have the value of the originals. They are a decent substitute for the originals. Especially if you don’t want to do restoration and want a pretty pony. There was a retro release for 25th anniversary as well and they are no where near the value of the originals either.

There are some noticeable differences..

The originals have © 1982 Hasbro - Hong Kong on their hooves.
The 25th have © 2007 Hasbro - China on their hooves.
The 35th have © 2017 Hasbro - China - The Bridge Direct on their hooves.

Rainbows are a bit tougher to tell apart although the 25th have noticeably smaller eyes.

That 25 th anniversary cotton candy is so different!
This is a great comparison!

Most of the original cp ponies came in flat foot for the first release and concave foot, too, plus mail order variations.

I personally think Basic Fun has great reproductions, although they'll likely never have the same value due to being just that. But I admittedly find their Rainbow repros hard to tell apart from the originals without seeing the stamps!

Their repros are wonderful.

Just so I’m not confusing anyone. I, too, like the basic fun ponies.

I'm not sure how Basic Fun! produces their repros, but the large difference in OGs and the 25th birthday/anniversary releases is likely because Hasbro had to make new molds using actual G1s. They claimed that all original production molds were "lost," and they asked their employees to provide G1s to use for the 2007 repro molds. Their feet are totally flat. They're not good quality, but still nice to have in the collection if you're nostalgic.

They are rock solid and the heads are not sealed. They are very close to the original. The harder ones are the unicorns, posey, FF, Medley, AJ & second set of rainbows.
