FIM vs Older Generations

So, I've been thinking about this a lot, lately. A few months ago most people collected everything, and pretty much everypony agreed on which ponies they liked.
Then came FiM.
A massive wave of FiM fans rippled through the internet, and the TP and Arena had (and have) a huge wave of new pony collectors who are totally obsessed with one kind of pony: G4.
For a while, it was great. We got a huge mass of people joining the forums, including teenagers and more males then before. But after a while...
G4 was EVERYWHERE. People were obsessed to a bit of an odd level. There were heaps of blogs and pages and websites put up discussing FiM...
So how many people still love G1 most??
DON'T GET ME WRONG GUYS!
I love G4 with a passion. It's incredible.
But I still love G1 more.
I have NOTHING against the collectors, I think it's great, but I just had a thought... It's slightly annoying at times. Now when I google "My little pony" it instantly shows G4!
What are your thoughts on this?
 
I have to be honest, I became a fan when FiM came out. Then I realized had a pony from 1983 who looked like FiM Applejack. Then I found Dream Valley. Found out I had Up, Up, & Away and Chief as well as Applejack. I found this site and lurked for a bit before joining. Now I'm hooked. I do like FiM, and I've made a lot of friends because of it, but I love G1s more. :)
 
Hehe. Even though I became a fan via FiM, I like G1 best. While I can't really speak for the cartoons, I think that the G1 dolls are way cuter. ;D G1 was also the most creative generation... G4 hasn't been around long enough to have as much.
 
I like them both in different ways :) Obviously, having grown up with G1, I have a soft spot for the original ponies. For me, G1s are about nostalgia, restoration, and finding the nicest pony possible; filling the sets to capture a bit of history. G4s, on the other hand, are all about living in the now! The amount of customization and the general buzz surrounding them is just so much fun!! It's such an odd phenomenon...I think of all the G4 collectors years and years down the line who will be so frustrated with the haircuts and rehairs that are running so rampant now! It's like G4s scream "customize me" in ways that minty G1s don't.

So, long story short, love me some G1s, but am having a great time with G4s as well :D
 
I try not to be /too/ hard on the G4 only fans since I only got into collecting because of customizing XD But I eventually embraced every generation (I'm even in the process of adding a bunch of *GASP* G2s to my wishlist- THE HORROR!!! haha)

So while I get the "OMG FIM YAY HUB OMG LOOKIT!" mentality (it's new, it's exciting, people have to get into the community SOME way) I too am waiting for it to die down a little bit and have the FiM people start to embrace the older generations and customs and everything great about the pony community =)
 
As much as I like G4, G1 still holds a special place in my heart. G1's still the best MLP generation, imo. I can't say much about the G4 toyline because there isn't much newer ponies coming out lately. So yeah, G1's still my favorite generation.
 
I didn't grow up with G1s. I was born when G2s came out, but I grew up with G3s. At first Core 7 scared me, but I soon got used to it. I LOVE G4s, but to tell you the truth, I like G1s better. Before FiM even started, I was going to YouTube and watching G1 videos. I the toys and reflected on the beginning of MLP. So when the G4s came out, I felt that if G4 became my favorite generation, I would be disloyal to the birth of My Little Pony and my childhood generation. So G1s and G3s are still my favorite.

I did the exact same thing. But now, actually, I still love G4 but not as much as at first because they're EVERYWHERE. :hide:
 
When I first started collecting I was a G1 purist. I didn't even consider G2 or G3 to be REAL ponies. Pah, just failed attempts at the awesomeness of G1s. But then G3s grew on me and became really exciting with all the different aspects. Balloon flying! Scooters! head turning! Breezies! UNICORNS!! ..but then the excitement kind of died. I would still buy G3s loose or G3.5 if I found them but it wasn't really the same. But now with the G4.. new personalities! new poses! new colors! new ponies! it's exciting again! that's why so many collectors embraced G4 like a long-lost friend. We were all waiting for something else exciting!


I don't mind all the constant news about G4 (although there are so many "JUST FOUND!!" posts it gets kind of confusing to follow what is new and what was found months ago, what is Euro exclusive and what will come to the US)...

but deep down I'm still a G1 collector. You should see how many I've added lately! I found a G1 Woosie that had pink marks all over her and my roommate restored her to perfect condition using timed applications of acne cream. G1s are my first love, the stuff I grew up with, my main collection.. but yeah, I'm going to keep buying G4s too :p
 
I will always stay true to my G1 root's, since those are the ponies I grew up with, but I do like the G4's as well... I mean I wouldn't have all the ones I could get my hand's on if I didn't like them.
But I do get a little down when I hear people talking about how they like ponies only because of the G4's since to me the G1's will always be the coolest to me, maybe it's cause they remind me of my childhood.

I do like them both though... just in different way's...
 
I will always Love G1`s the most.
As much as I LOVE G4s, and FIM, G1s will always be number one in my heart.
G1s bring back many childhood memories of playing with my Ponies as a little kid.
They hold alot of sentimental value for me.

I dont really mind the hoopla surrounding FIM, I think the show and
the toys are a breath of fresh air. IMO, The show is hilarious&adorable, and the toys are SO cute! I mean, I remember when alot of people
were unhappy because we were seemingly stuck forever with the core 7.
Now we have tons of new characters to look foward to.
 
Like I said in another post: I'm not sure I'm quite used to the new G4 look. They seem to look less and less like ponies. They're cute.....but I'm still not used to them. I love my good old childhood G1's! Yah! lol
 
I love all the generations! *silence as shock horror replaces pony chatter around the room* i have ponies from each and every gen, and although g3.5 have to be my least favourite (it really is sad when you mistake loose dragon toys for loose newborn cutie ponies in the op-shop toy basket upon first glance) I love G1 & G2, bought them new as a kid and adored them, Ivy and Sugarbelle were the tween daughters of my Ruby Lips! When G3 came out, I bought all the originals and some of the playset ponies, but there were just too many too fast and I couldn't keep up, they were distributed exclusively here, there and everywhere, who knew where to go to get what?! I'm not a huge fan of core 7, but I have a few lying around, and they're with me to stay! I saw the FiM craziness online and had no idea what it was about, as we had neither show or toys here in Australia.... so I downloaded season one and set about waiting for the toys. I love FiM, and G4 mlp.... as much as I love any other pony - they're all one big happy pony family in our house, all close to my heart like my (also all gens) care bears and grand champions!
 
I collect everything MLP related, but G1's are my favorite and what I focus on. They always will be. I don't mind if there's a lot of hype around the G4's though. Everyone just having pony related fun!

I love both G1 and G4 but I am not a real fan of G2 nor G3
 
G1 will always be my favorite. I grew up with them and became friends with Aadra because of them. I have a soft spot for G2's also, but they're secondary. I don't actively collect G3's (and won't allow G3.5 in the house) but I'll pay a quarter at the flea market for one, and the G4's have BARELY arrived here so I don't have many, and am not likely to if they don't release some more poses.
 
G1 were more magical to me and always be <33
