King Sombra (correct spelling, so sayeth show staff) was really one dimensional. I'm surprised that he got killed at the end of it all. I'm also surprised that princess Skyla didn't show up, either.

There was a couple of continuity errors that bugged me. When the celestial sisters stopped Sombra 1,000 years ago, in the story it showed present-day Celestia and Luna. We know that they didn't look like this 1,000 years ago, because when we see the storybook telling of Celestia banishing Nightmare Moon, we see that both (pre-corruption) princesses are the same size, and that 'tia has pink hair. When Luna is released from NMM, we see her with solid-blue, nonmagic hair, which is how she looked before she was trapped. s1 Luna grows up, which is why she looks bigger and magicy-er in s2. The outlines we see in the 1,000 crystal empire flashback is of full age Celestia and s2/s3 Luna, which would be incorrect.

The crystal ponies have also been locked away/gone/whatever for 1,000 years, so you would think they would talk in ye olde pony, much like Princess Luna did when she came back, but they didn't do that, either.

But this is a show for little kids, so you can't really expect them to have fact checkers.

As I was discussing with some brony friends, I don't think this will be the last of Sombra. This may have been just an intro.

Best scenes had to be the Pinkie ones. xD That Fluttershy costume...oh my.

It was nice that Spike got to play a huge role in this one!

Nice to see Shining Armor and Cadence again. :)
It looked to me like all the Crystal ponies were Earth ponies. Strange, no?

I was hoping that we might get a reference to the TE ponies, but no such luck. Good season opener, though.

I think that expecting the show to reference G1 at all is just wishful thinking. It seems pretty obvious to me that Hasbro is building its legacy from G3 onward, with G1 being just sort of acknowledged, but not seen as essential.
The one thing I think would be reasonable to expect FiM to actually present would be sea ponies, since a lot of people would love to see them (bronies included), and since we haven't had a beach/sea themed episode, it stands as a possibility. Still, I think it's more likely that we'd see G4 counterparts of Toola Roola and Starsong before that happened (I still can't for the life of me get exactly why are these two MIA along with Minty).

But on to the episode... It was nice, though it doesn't top Return of Harmony by any means. :p It just felt like something was missing, I can't put my finger on exactly what. Maybe it was the fact that King Sombre was kind of one-dimensional, as it's been said before. For all the hubbub built around him, he didn't have much presence, to say nothing of personality. But truth be told, he wasn't the main conflict's point. He was more of a ticking clock plot device to push the A (Twilight's quest) and B (the Crystal ponies' ordeal) stories through rather than a character in his own right. And I'll stop myself right there before I go into full-blown review mode. ^^;

Absolutely loved Rarity and Pinkie Pie's scenes, awesome, as always. And it really is nice that Spike got some time to shine. I do wonder what Twilight's "higher studies" will entail, though... Hmmmm...

True, but Rarity's wings in 'Sonic Rainboom' had to have been a reference to the Flutter Ponies. It's too coincidental, otherwise. Perhaps Sombra will return for the season finale.

Okay I am watching right now so here are just some stream of consciousness things:

I hope they make the little sheep as toys! They are sooooo cute!
I love the Grecian-inspired Crystal Pony hairdos.
I hate when Shining Armor calls Twilight "Twily"

And now I have to go run errands with the bf before I can watch Part 2.

Hah! I was ready for this eventuality! Lol, joking, joking...
But yeah, Rarity's wings could just as easily been just an early advertisement for the Glimmer Wing line. If there was any reference to the word "fluttering" (though this could be just my memory failing me), or even "summer", or "windy", or maybe mentioning of I don't know, an ancient race of butterfly winged ponies or something (which would be cool, not that I think about it), I'd be more willing to believe it was a direct reference to G1. I would be willing to believe that choosing Rarity could have something to do with the unicorns in G2, the ones that came with a butterfly wing hair clip... But even then it could very well be that they simply went with the personality that would be of better use to the plot. It's just not clear enough for me to understand it as a full-blown reference.
That's why I used the word "acknowledged" - from what I can observe, yes, in FiM G1 is given a few small nods here and there, but not considered essential or a fully integral part of the MLP legacy, so to speak, at least in the same way that Transformers G1 is in relation to the rest of the franchise.
...Okay, I promise this is my last post on this thread. Enough with the long-winded speeches already...

That aside and back on topic, I did think the Crystal Ponies had more in common with the Sparkle Ponies than the Twinkle Eyes, though. Shiny!

when the crystal ponies referred to cadance as the crystal princess, I thought there was going to be some revelation about cadance being a long lost relative/princess/whatever. I was surprised when nothing more came of it.

I realized that cadance looks like a grown up version of baby sunsparkle (minus the horn or wings) G3 My Little Pony Reference - Pink Sunsparkle

I thought the same thing. I was like, "Well, who lives in that castle? No one? OK, yeah..." And I was a little surprised that there wasn't more development to King Sombra's character considering he was the reason behind the entire thing.

I think Cadence and Shining Armour will rule the crystal empire, hence her being called the crystal princess... she is the element of love after all... but yeah, I thought it might have been her 'homeland' or something...

I was also expecting Cadence and Shining Armor to stay behind.
The weird rock chunks in Shining Armor's horn were just, well, weird. Couldn't he remove them?
It would have been decidedly cooler if they remained crystal ponies long enough to go back to Ponyville and cause a fuss.
I found the scene with Twilight's worst fear sorta predictable.
I wish the rest of the mane 6 played a bigger role.
Rarity and Pinkie were hysterical.
Overall, pretty good opener.

Perhaps. Really, the only reason I say it might have been a reference to the Flutter Ponies was because, 1) the iridescent, butterfly shape to them, and 2) how easily they were destroyed.

A wild Earth Pony appeared! *sparkle sparkle*

You're probably right about that, though. That said, it would've been a perfect opportunity to reference both. It was really just wishful thinking on my part for a potential Masquerade or Galaxy expy.

All of this! :D I was thinking the exact same things. (Hasbro, we demand sheep toys!!)

And I think Shining Armor calling her "Twily" is even worse with that strange surfer accent that he has. XD

ok, ok...
i disagree with a couple of you girls.
i love that Shining Armor calls his sister ''Twily'', i think it's cute, and i actually find myself calling twilight sparkle by that. Shining Armor and Princess Cadence are some of my fave FiM characters.
Spikes worst fear touched my heart, and i almost cried. soooo sweet.
i agree that Sombra lacked any real character, motive, or development. It was a pretty weak season opener, but i liked it just the same.

My friends and I enjoyed the first episode. There was lots of fun stuff and I loved all the crystal ponies! They just looked really cool. And the jousting armor was pretty, too.
I do kind of feel the quality of the songs has gone downhill since season one. They are neither catchy nor are the lyrics any good. They are just all starting to sound the same.

I am intrigued about the foreshadowing concerning Twilight Sparkle. I hope it's something they get to this season.

At the very end of the episode, Luna conjures up a black book. What was that all about? My friend joked that she was reading 50 shades of gray. *snort* But I'm curious if was there for a reason.

I am thinking it has something to do with Twilight's destiny. I thought it might be a prophecy or something. Or like... The opposite of a history book, whatever you'd call that.
