Equestria Girls: It's official

Listen to Phekzhen. I think a lot of people are thinking that FIM will go away and Equestria Girls will take it's place in both animated and toy form. I don't believe that's the case here. It looks like Hasbro is doing with MLP what it did with Transformers, it's putting two different shows and two different toylines out there. With Transformers there's Prime and Rescue Bots, with MLP they'll be FIM and Equestria Girls.

eeek. I like ponies because they're ponies. I can't say I'll enjoy this nearly as much without ponies!

Here's a simple solution... if you don't like it, don't watch it. The only way it can "ruin the characters/franchise/whatever" for you is if you let it. This quote is absolutely right:
They don’t mind having this fan base, but they can’t forget their core market...
Whine and cry all you want. This is Hasbro's thing, and they're gonna do what they wanna do. At the end of the day, we are still ADULTS collecting a TOY intended for CHILDREN. Be grateful that Hasbro chooses to acknowledge us at all.

Personally, I'm reserving judgment until I see an actual doll and/or episode of the show.

Thank you!

Despite how desperately some people want to believe otherwise, we are not, never have been, and never will be, Hasbro's primary audience. We're extremely fortunate that they even care enough about us to give us merchandise like Dr. Whooves and Derpy brushables, not to mention all the figures of minor characters like the Wonderbolts, Gilda, and Granny Smith.

Compared to other fandoms, we're downright spoiled.

ahhh I remember the good ole' days when I was Hasbro's prime audience. Back in the 80's when life was a simpler time. We had many ponies all different sets. Rarley did we have to same pony released over and over again, we loved having 100s of different ponies to collect and play with. ahhhh the memories!

Thank you!

I agree and disagree with this. It is nice that we get 'attention' from Hasbro as fans, but they haven't exactly been the best about the products produced for G4. If there weren't older fans and bronies wanting more background/side characters, all there would be is wave after wave of the mane 6.... and trust me, even the little girls that this is supposed to be aimed at would be tired of that after a short time......

Definitely... part of the reason being a G3 (NOT Bore 7) kid was so much fun (and I'm sure this holds true for you G1 kids too) was that there seemed to be an infinite number of ponies out there. The girls growing up with G4 would certainly get bored of the Mane 6.

That being said, I don't know if this will reach the intended audience. Girls go right from ponies to boys, cell phones, and makeup so fast nowadays I don't think there's room for this middle audience. Although Monster High does ok, but we'll see.

Hasbro wants Equestria Girls to be a "lifestyle brand," in much the same way FiM is going to be for older girls/teens/young adults starting next month in Japan. Little kid pony stuff is about playing with plastic toys. Older girls and adults want cute stuff, accessories, make up, cell phone charms, etc. Since this is common in Japan, Hasbro and their licensers are all set to do this over there.

In America, though, toy companies like Hasbro and Mattel start losing their audiances when they grow out of "baby toys" and talking animals. Equestria Girls will also be more relatable for girls who are starting, unfortunately, to move away from their imagination and try to fit in with what's presented to them in the popular media.

I don't know if EG will help the feminist movement like FiM does, but I wouldn't be surprised if it only kept pushing the salad-eating, lip-gloss wearing kids of today since it sells.

EG isn't made for us, it's made for tweens. Hasbro is creating licensed merchandise for bronies and a couple of cool things through TRU for collectors, but the tween market is still not being marketed to, which is what the investors want. And at the end of the day, Hasbro is just out to make as much profit as possible.

I honestly don't think EG is going to attract tweens at all. I was a tween not too long ago, and all tweens want to be is teenagers. Tweens aren't being marketed to because they are covered by teen marketing. Not me personally, but most girls back in like 7th grade were definitely not playing with toys. They were acting 16, not 12. They're too worried about growing up and not worried enough about enjoying their childhood before it's gone. Equestria Girls is going to be "for babies" as much as regular ponies are. And the tweens that are playing with toys (me, at that age) won't want something like that. Equestria Girls will sell to little girls who think they're grown up by playing with characters who are in high school. Again, this encourages the whole growing up fast thing and feeds the cycle.

Bottom line is, I think regular MLP is reaching who it needs to reach and Equestria Girls is targeting a market that does not exist, and if it does exist, they're going about it in the wrong way. Keeping my views as a collector out, and my views as one who used to be a tween in, that's my two cents (or maybe more than 2 :p).

That's true, but isn't it kind of a fluke that the periphery demographic for FiM blew up as big as it did?

All I'm saying is, there have been plenty of questionable moves throughout this franchise. It's survived even G3.5, which I've heard was considered to be the 'WORST. POSSIBLE. THING.' that's ever come out of this franchise. I'm sure our beloved ponies will survive this, even if worst comes to worst.

Interesting quote:

>But adult fans have also pushed to take more control of the brand, creating unauthorized digital games and plush toys that company executives eventually quashed.

>“They don’t mind having this fan base, but they can’t forget their core market,†said Jim Silver, editor in chief of timetoplaymag.com, which covers the toy industry. “These are waters you have to navigate very carefully.â€

This is in reference to Fighting is Magic and two plushie sellers (I believe one being White Dove). NYT makes it sound like we're trying to wretch control of what they make from them, and it's sort of true. White Dove made THOUSANDS a month on these custom plushies, and now Hasbro is making their own excellent plushies through licensers.

I don't think the NYT understands. It's about $$$ and illegal activities.
Sure there is always someone who thinks I want this and makes it and people like it so they might do more. But, the people who seriously get C&D from Hasbro are deluded if they try to justify themselves by hiding behind a hobby. Hasbro isn't paranoid of the adult fans. They love the ones that grew up with MLP because they want MLP for their kids. Hasbro wants to make profits, big profits and it makes sense to expand the brand as much as possible.

Other then some antique and vintage dolls, dolls really aren't my thing. But, Hasbro making money is "my thing" in that it means new ponies, collector exclusives and all that good stuff as a collector I can look forward to in the future. Toy companies have been hit hard recently, Hasbro and Mattel included- dismal Christmas sales last year. So new lines, hopefully successful ones for little girls can only mean good thing for them. :satisfied:

I just keep hoping that they meet a little girl named Megan who becomes part of their group. ;)
