Is there a good brand of dye or paint to use to re-color a pony's mane? Or is it just easier all around to re-hair? (in particular, I want to change the lavendar streak in Moondancer's mane to silver for a custom, but keep the magenta)

Thanks,

Jes

This is so weird. Last night I almost posted a thread like this.

I want to dye the white hair, from the g3 'decorate your own pony', without having to remove the hair and re-root. The customs that I have re-haired look like crap, and I don't have the patience for it. :00)

I have Rit dye, which works really well for dying the pony's bodies. So my question is, does Rit dye work equally as well on hair...?

I hope we get some answers! :D

I posted the same question on the Arena forums too, and Icelaughter there says that Rit dye does work on the hair, she's used it to re-dye faded manes.

Thank you, I will give it a try!

yes the RIT works very well on manes. I dyed a G3 (and G1) Butterscotch in pearl gray and they both turned a lovely black, manes and all.

however, if you just want to change that small of a streak i'd say reroot it. it'd just be less messy. but that's just me.

Pony hair dyes very well, as has been mentioned, but you're not going to be able to dye lavender hair silver. You can't go lighter than the original color with dye, and there actually isn't silver Rit, just grey. Dollyhair.com has some silvery colors, though.

just don't use sharpies... they are a hassle and they continue to lose colour for all eternity!

The Sharpie Technique

just don't use sharpies... they are a hassle and they continue to lose colour for all eternity!

I actually have a technique for that. You can easily make a good dye by removing the felt filter from the sharpie, dilute it in water or white vinegar, and soak in or spray on hair with squirt bottle. perfect for repinking. leave in or wash out after an hour. Condition with a sulfate free conditioner for colored hair. This is a technique used to dye costume wigs of similar material. For a light pink use sharpie's " Fine Berry" which is a dark magenta. Always test on a section of hair first, or buy a cheap fakie or dollar tree doll for all dye testing. Less water means more color, so add more for a subtle sheen. As for removing the filter, all sharpies pop open like easter eggs when bent. Use gloves and newspaper for any dying, and you can even use foil to seperate sections! sharpie blends well, too.

Just like processed human hair, a dyed pony will be vulnerable to fading from heat (curling irons/straightners) and harsh shampoos that strip oils and dyes from hair (ingrediant to avoid: any kind of sulfate) So use rollers to curl and to straighten, wet and condition hair, comb out straight, and flatten with paper towels under a book- leave to dry.

I am training to be a hairstylist out of highschool, and I have collected ponies my whole life. I've dyed my whole head hot pink for 4 years. I touch up my naturally light blonde roots with sharpies I use to repink ponies. Please pm me your questions on sharpie colors, hair products, pony hair, or anything. Id be glad to provide step by step pictures or final product pictures of ponies.

I just did a pilot run on a custom for coloring pale blonde hair bright yellow at the very tips.

Got out a small baby food container, and squirted some yellow acrylic paint in it. Added water, then set the ends of the hair in to the dye bath.

I then rinsed off the excess, then got out a mlp brush and brushed it out to even out the dye then let it set.

We'll see how it goes!
