Dusting never ceases

The bane of every collector. I feel like I finish just to start over again. It definitely seems worse now that I live with 2 other people and a dog (cute tho he is, he sheds like crazy.)

How are we dealing with dust nowadays? I know short of getting glass cabinets I can probably only mitigate. But I hate cleaning only for it to be dusty again like 2 days later.

Very true. I should really dust my ponies more. A good friend of mine recommended to me that I use a make up brush to do so. It''s quite effective but I long for the day I can have a real glass display case.

My pony collection is currently... very small (a grand total of 4 so far lol) but I definitely understand your pain! My collection of figures and various other merch is difficult to keep dust-free!

I use a hoover attachment for dusting most things but as that wouldn't be a good idea for ponies (unless the hoover is turned off), I might steal your makeup brush tip!

I need to dust again. I keep meaning to. If I’m going to have these things I need to look after them and clean them

I use a spare thick paintbrush I have

I feel your pain and it’s an additional reason my collection stayed in storage for over a decade and a half; it bothers me more than is probably rational to pick up a beloved pony and see her with a layer of grime. At some point a few years back I realized that there wasn’t anything stopping me from displaying them in a plastic ziploc bag. (They were all individually bagged when I stored them anyway.)

It’s certainly not super aesthetic but they’re being displayed in my bedroom and I don’t need to care what anyone else feels about it. I love looking at them AND knowing that their hair and bodies are staying pristine, especially when I pick one up and the bag is really dusty. I’m pleased that the dust can’t make it to them and the bag itself is easy to wipe off.

:ponylove:

My mom lives with me and she has an African Gray parrot which makes for a massive amount of dust, exponentially more than normal. Plus we have two dogs. I have an altar space with crystals and knick knacks which gets super dusty super quickly and I don’t clean it nearly as often as I should.

People have said to me that having them bagged feels wrong - like the pony can’t breathe. I figure they’re plastic so another layer of plastic is practically natural, right? But really I figure they’re equally as happy to not be getting dusty and dirty so it’s whatever.

Your collection being in plastic bags while on display feels pretty unique to me and actually kind of interesting in a way

Soft clean brush for the ponies, soft cotton or microfiber towel for the surfaces they're on.
My ponies are currently in a closet that stays closed most of the time, so not much dust, and the cats can't mess with them, but if I did want them out and more visible I'd want them in a glass cabinet.

I usually use a swiffer duster and microfiber cloth. Personally, traditional dusters only seem to move the dust around, not really pick it up. :/

I've debated getting one one of those mini vacuums for computers but I'm worried hair or something will get stuck in it lol.

Oh man, 2 dogs and a bird? My sympathies ^^;

I was looking at shoe display cases for yarn, but maybe that would work for ponies lol?

Oh the dust never goes away for me no matter how hard I try. I've been trying to get rid of it for months, but with my roommates' dog and cat and poor ventilation my ponies are just smothered in dust occasionally :surprisepony:

I'm sure I've also seen someone use a clear shower liner cut to the bookcase size and Velcro taped around the edges.
To me, the curtain option won't look as nice as glass but is definitely more economical.

I think, too, embracing cleaning and dusting as a way to interact with and appreciate your collection and trying to have a positive mindset that you are caring for them and respecting the joy they bring to you can be helpful, instead of seeing it as a frustrating or time-consuming chore. That was one of my big takeaways from reading a Marie Kondo book that stuck with me and that I try to apply to my cleaning and tidying tasks since. I totally get that doesn't really work with everyone's situations though.

I used to live in Oklahoma...the sky there often was tinged brown from dust, so stuff would get dusty in just a few days. Even cabinet doors and glass doored cabinets weren't good enough. (dusty dishes, ugh!)

Ultimately, I had to use box protectors, bags, or totes with gaskets to keep dust out. Air filters and higher grade HVAC filters helped otherwise it would have been worse. But depending on where someone lives, there might not be much to control it.

I moved east and still have pets. Cat hair may still get everywhere but the dust isn't terrible now.

There are some clothing racks/portable closet type racks with a fabric outer shell that zip closed with vinyl fronts. So something like that could be fitted around shelves and close up better then velcro. People often give them away because the inner racks are flimsy.

Ok y'all hear me out. Something like this, with a tension rod, or maybe velcro:

Plus a clear shower liner, cut to size? What do we think??

I just love the potential social interactions from having curtains over the shelves. XD People would walk into my house and think it's a perfectly normal house until I dramatically pull back the curtain and BAM! one million ponies.

But for someone with mischievous cats that have a tendency to climb curtains, glass would probably work better. I still long for the day that I can convert an extra bedroom or a big closet into pony display heaven.
