Does anyone still use kanekalon hair?

Is the hair considered old school now? lol I found a bunch of packets in my attic but not sure if anyone uses this type anymore?

I've seen people post customs recently on which they've used the kanekalon hair. It seems like the dollyhair nylon is just loads more popular. It's the one that has gotten the most word put out about it, so newbies to customizing go to that mostly too.

Hee, yes, I have a huge stash of Kanekalon from the Time Before Dollyhair Existed. I generally use it in my more "arts and crafts" customs now. It has its uses, but doing Hasbro-style ponies is not one of them.

Is it coarser or finer than the nylon? What about color range?

Coarser, and tends to snap more easily than nylon during rehairing. Also can't brush a curl into it, you have to boil perm or flatiron it. Smaller color range now that Dollyhair and others are on the scene.

For me, nylon is the happy median between saran (too limp) and kanekalon (tends to mohawk) but like anything, you can make it work. This Surprise of mine was rehaired with kanekalon:

I thought I was the only one that it snapped on during rehairing lol
I think it's still usable. I was thinking of selling it but not many people use it anymore since I think you're right about the word spreading about dollyhair.

it's the crimped hair right? I just finished a commission that requested it, and have used it in the past. it has to fit the right pony...but some of us still use it. unless you had a color I needed I wouldn't be needing any more though lol. I prefer dollyhair too.

no it's the silky kind...i was too afraid to use the other

I rather like it. Some hairsyles will call for a stiffer look, and nylon can be too silky.

I use it mainly for plushes. It just fits, I think. :)

Aha! Now I finally know what to use my stash on...plushes! Do you have any pictures of yours, Skeen?

Heck no! LOL I do NOT sew well. Nothing I have ever sewn will ever show up online, lest people think me "special." LOL! :icon_smile_lachuh:

Ok Skeen...now you have to show us...I can even change this thread title if you'd like to "Skeen's oh so special plushies"

We won't think you're special Skeen -- not that way, I mean. ;)

I found a plush pony pattern last night (not MLP, but another vintage pattern). I'll make a test pony and try the kanekalon hair in it. Don't know which pony yet -- have to check the fabric stash and see what colors I have.

All I can recommend with the plushies and hair - Fabri-Tac glue! Glue that hair down, THEN sew it into place. Just spread the hair over the surface you want it to be on, saturate it with glue, then se it all up.

I'm waiting for rosesare (?) to start selling her mini giant plush pattern. Maybe then I'll have some to show. ;)

I might buy it, how much do you have, colors and how much?

lol I sorta left it in the attic after I found it but I'll let you know when I creep up there again :D I just assumed it was "old fashioned" anymore

I'm crazy, and made a mini plush pony last night -- totally eyeballed the pattern and everything. I should have some pics later once I figure out how to do the last few touches. Keep an eye out for a new thread just for the plushie in a few more hours. :)

If I don't have donar pony hair, I use it when I re-hair cause its what I have some stock in. I don't mind it.
