So I was looking on a totally unrelated gaming forum, and all the mods there have MLP banners and avis.... did i turn round and miss something here? did the hub series do this? I feel so out of the loop now! help!

Oh yes, it was the Hub series. My Little Pony is now a major internet meme, and there's a whole community of "Bronies" who are mostly(80%) males in their teens and twenties.
It's fantastic! :D

Yes, it was the HUB series.

People (15+ males who otherwise don't watch pony shows, to name one group) have taken an abnormal liking to it.
I mean yeah it's a good series but the rate at which pony memes and fanart (and even forums/***** boards to discuss the series) have grown is ridiculous!

Folks really like the animation, characters and addictive songs (Art of the Dress to name one). It's a well done show and sometimes members of the team who produce it will interact with the raving fans.

The ponies in the banners/avis you saw were probably G4 art style or FiM main characters. Though I think most of the 'bronies' know about the G3 ponies and would recognize ones like Star Catcher, they favor the FiM stars.

I've only known about the new show for a couple weeks now. I remember being so confused when all of my deviantART updates were suddenly MLP. FiM has taken the internet by storm.

Personally, I don't see the big deal about it. The original cartoon styles had a lot more charm.

I don't know but everytime they start to sing a song on that show I hit the mute button.

Haha, I find it somewhat hilarious now that it's taken off all over the internet. People - primarily males - on facebook have ponies for the icons. The bronies tend to not really pay attention to any of the earlier generations unless the G4s have some association with it (i.e. some know that Rainbow Dash was originally G3).

It's kinda weird now when the guys at uni start talking about ponies o_O

Yes, MLP has swept the internet! Total pwnie-age! :cheshire:

It warms my heart to see guys bucking the gender norms that try to force boys to only like THIS, not THAT. Plus the bronies have proven to be a great additional source of fanfiction and fanart! I'm following, like, nine fanfics on Equestria Daily. Awwww yeah!

Bronies mostly stick with FIM, sometimes know which G1 ponies the FIM ponies were based on, know a bit about G3, and believe the Newborn Cuties animations are the stuff of nightmares.

But then, I think most living human beings agree that the Newborn Cuties clips are the stuff of nightmares. I'm 99% sure that their dark powers are what turned poor little Luna into Nightmare Moon.

Wow, that is so much information,,,I did not even know that that is what you call male collectors!!!
You can call female fans that too ;3 It's mostly used to refer to a fan of the show, as opposed to a collector of older generations. Some of us (like me) are kinda both though.

maybe FiM style is so popular with teen boys because it's practically pokemon anime ... cool stories occasionally, but honestly, not pony at all :-( (sorry, so old school...) still, I guess it's cool to hear it's well received

I don't understand what all the fuss is about really. Sure, it's a decent cartoon as modern cartoons go (and considering a lot of the real RUBBISH that they make for kids these days!), but I can't see why people - and especially young men - have become quite so obsessed.

Am I the only one who thinks this is not an entirely good thing? Yes, I'm sure Hasbro are thrilled with how popular their line has become, but there are pros and cons to everything.

I haven't noticed it so much in the UK yet (probably because FiM is not airing here at the moment), but surely if MLP gains popularity, it will be even harder to get good deals at car boot sales/flea markets etc. People will decide that even their "rare valuable fakies" are worth double the ridiculous prices they were charging in the first place as now there are more buyers around.

Also, a lot of it is the wrong kind of interest, I'm afraid to say. Okay, I personally find the, ahem, "adult" artwork and fanfiction distasteful, but to each their own, and that wasn't really what I meant (although I do wonder how the sheer amount of this stuff is going to affect parents' opinions of MLP. There is a lot of downright creepy material being created relating to this franchise now, and I'd hate to see any potential pedophiles use it to their advantage)

But no, that wasn't what I'm talking about at all.

I saw a few of you in this thread mention how the "bronies" (or whatever they call themselves) ignore everything apart from FiM. Unfortunately that's not exactly true. Everywhere I go, I see utter HATRED for the previous generations (especially the cartoons, but sometimes the toys as well). I liked our close community. I could pretty much go anywhere in the MLP community, express my (polite) opinion and nobody would jump down my throat for it. Now there are so many people who aren't really MLP fans who will screach at you if you like anything other than FiM.

It really makes me sad. To me, MLP is about being kind and polite to people, accepting their differences, making new friends (even the new TV show's title supports that one!) and embracing the innocence of childhood. But all of this seems to have been lost in one fell swoop. :nodno:

I have had people respond to positive comments I wrote on old MLP videos over a year ago, swearing at me and telling me that I deserve to get cancer/be suffocated/die in a house fire because I like something that came before FiM, when "GODDESS LAUREN FAUST SAVED MLP". Why the heck do they care if she "saved MLP" or not, considering they obviously took no bloomin' notice of MLP before anyway?! I've seen these people gathering on EVERY SINGLE MLP VIDEO on Youtube, bringing it to the ground because it's not the wonderful FiM. The funniest ones are where they've quite obviously not even bothered to watch the videos and say something relating to another series. I especially hate when they drag down the "awful" voice actors from G3/G3.5 and compare them to the "fantastic" voice actors in G4 (many of whom are the SAME PEOPLE, guys!) Ugh.

Then, since they're obviously still SO bored between new episodes of FiM and can't find any more MLP episodes to tear apart, they'll gather on other projects that the "awful" voice actors (and probably animators etc. as well - I just don't know so much about them) from previous MLP generations have worked on, and tear them to bits on those as well, wishing horrendous diseases and accidents on them as well... WTH? So they got paid to do a voice in a kids' cartoon 20 years ago. Does that really mean you're justified in saying that they should all just die a horrific death?! That's like me saying, "Ugh, I hate McDonalds. WHAT? You worked at McDonalds one summer when you couldn't get any other job?! DIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE, you evil person!" 00)

Anyway, sorry for the long rant. I do realise that only a small percentage of the new fans are like that, but I'm still pretty upset by all this unwanted attention and bitterness aimed at my favourite generations and the personal comments being thrown at me. I just hope the FiM hype will die down for a while after the final episode of this season is out of the way. :(

I'd like to respectfully disagree. On Ponychan (a website dedicated to the FiM), as far as I've seen, the behavioral code is 'love and tolerance'. Of course there are trolls, and Youtube is generally one of the places where comments are at their rudest, for any type of video.
I've been a part of threads that celebrated the old my little pony cartoons, especially G1. Most people who dislike old ponies are referring to G 3.5. In fact, I've seen lovely fanart of G1 crop up recently just because of the renewed interest. While there are rude fans, there are rude fans everywhere. As someone who has a lot of friends who are only interested in My Little Ponies now, I enjoy the chance to discuss my life-long interests with someone in real life. I've never been able to do that. There are pros and cons, to any situation, I suppose.

They are lots of very interesting topics discussed here. I think it'll take me a while to truly wrap my brain around what's happening to ponies in pop culture. This is a very confusing but extremely exciting time for ponies.

I just have to say that I do agree that I'm a little disappointed that this exploding fandom has not yet turned to the G1s or G3s yet- they mainly seem to dislike or not even care about the previous generations. But what I really don't get is why they haven't found US yet.... they are raving about some customs that are on Deviant Art, but there are amazing ones here too- not that I really WANT them here, but it'd be neat to just for once be acknowledged. Kind of how everyone knows about Star Wars collectors... we're kind of the forgotten ones in a way.

Maybe that's a good thing? I for one agree with Lancer that I do not like some of their more adult artwork. That just doesn't fly here. In fact, it's downright disgusting in my opinion. Sorry. Maybe some of you won't know what we're talking about- but be glad. I did a search for Fluttershy using Google Images and was just appalled at some of the results!

I love ponies and I love the new direction that they're going in, but I'm mainly just confused as to how two different groups of people love it, yet aren't really together at all, aren't communicating between the two, and don't seem to be acknowledging the other. I feel like they know about us, but in a way, the fact that they never mention us makes me feel like they think of us as "You're doing it wrong!, here's how it's done, watch and learn." But again, maybe we don't want to be .... bombarded at the same time. *shrugs* I just don't know.

In the end, I think it's pretty amazing and I'm glad the show is getting so much attention and love. It is a really good show.

I have seen some large communities recognize the TP's existence, as a place to buy G1s or find customs. They mainly neglect to bring up the TP and Arena (and similar, older pony communities). I'm not sure if they just assume we'd rather stick to ourselves than deal with hoards of FiM fans, we're not super into FiM, or they just don't like us. Maybe they're trying to be respectful of our different userbases (I'd guess almost all of us are long-time G1 (or G2) fans as opposed to new G4 fans) by not storming in to discuss FiM.

Pretty sure they know we exist but for whatever reason have chosen to keep their distance, unless someone wants to buy G1s. I have seen people express an interest in G1 and G3s as well (they seem to ignore G2s for the most part), and not too much bashing goes along with it. It likely depends on the forum/community you go to, the chans will have a lot more bashing than a forum, which go by "if you don't like what this thread is about stay out" as opposed to post whatever here like *****.

Ugh some of the art produced... is really gross. I don't see the need to make dirty images of ponies. They're PONIES. Why? I'm also not a huge fan of the smut fanfics churned out. It's nice to see MLP getting so much recognition but on the other hand, there's all these bizarre works of 'art' and it's like... please stop. I'm not against fanfics as a whole, but graphic fanfics of ponies are not required.

I know what you mean Claire, any time you have a massive image dump of FiM art there's some really nasty stuff thrown in. Some of the comics/macros are pretty funny but then you get something NSFW and you just wonder why. Not to sound like a prude but come on, do we really need that stuff floating around?
I also don't get some of the fandom relations/ships... like when they pair two female ponies together then theorize that so-and-so (not Sew-and-Sew lol) baby pony is their child. Gonna go out on a limb and assume ponies require a boy pony and a girl pony to make a baby pony... or maybe they do just come out of a mirror LOL (to clarify, I meant genetic child.. I don't think Twilight's lab has the ability to clone baby ponies yet)

The fanbase behind Derpy Hooves (the purple-grey & yellow peg with the derp eyes) is just nuts! They've made her one of the most recognizable G4s, on par with the main 6 and Celestia, imo. She probably wouldn't have gotten much attention from us so in a way, it's good for the recurring character background ponies as they get some focus.

YouTube always seems to attract the rudest comments/people, I'm not sure why. I too find it aggravating when people comment on a video JUST to say they dislike whatever show the video's about. Really? Really?

I don't think it's too surprising that a lot of FIM fans aren't interested in G1/G3 . . . It's specifically the art style and writing of FIM that appeals to them, and that's wildly, wildly different than G1/G3. It's the same for me with Transformers. Transformers G1? Like it. TF Beast Wars? Love it. TF Cybertron and TF Energon? Do not want! TF live action movies? Kill them with fire.

That said, I've seen some fanfiction and fan art that incorporate G1 characters as well as G4 characters. Some of it is by "traditional" MLP fans who were here in the community before FIM, but I know some of it is by bronies.

This fanfiction is one of my favorites--in it, Firefly is the head flight instructor at the Junior Speedster Flight Camp that Gilda and Rainbow Dash attend:

Junior Speedsters Forever Chapter 1: First Impressions, a My Little Pony fanfic - FanFiction.Net

(Surprise also makes an appearance!)

Zephyra ~ I really hope I didn't offend you. As I said, I realise that for the most part the new fans are not like that at all, and I have no problem with the people who just have no interest in the earlier generations. My problem comes with the few who ruin it for the rest of us; the bored individuals who have nothing better to do with their time than search out every G1/G3 video on Youtube, look for positive comments from long term fans like myself and respond to tell me that I'm a moron and should die for having a different opinion to them! o_0

I think what a lot of people also forget is that G3/G3.5 and G4 are aimed at quite different age groups. My young nieces (ages 2-6) love the G3/G3.5 movies, but some of the jokes in G4 are a little above their heads. I just can't see the point in pouring hatred into what was, at the end of the day, a short cartoon made to entertain pre-school children. If it makes them happy, let them enjoy it. The old MLP has been replaced now so we won't be seeing any new movies in that style (something I'm personally really sad about as I loved the G3 characters!), and I don't see how the old videos on Youtube are hurting anybody.

Well, apart from those Newborn Cuties cartoons, but that goes without saying! At least G1 (the 1980s series and Tales) and G3/G3.5 were written, animated and voiced by some pretty well renowned people, whether you like the different styles or not. Those Newborn Cuties episodes were just AWFUL in comparison. The stilted animation, those bored-sounding child voice actors... what on Earth were Hasbro thinking of?!

Pony Tales will always be my personal favourite MLP cartoon (and I already know I'm in the minority there!) Yes, the ponies were rather too humanised, but they had the basic animation style of G1 - in body shape anyway - without all the horrible animation and voice over mistakes. I wish that show had run for more than one season. :-(

Not offended at all ;3 I understand that people have way different opinions.

I loved the old G1 cartoons (I had a few on VHS) but I've never been able to get ahold of My Little Pony Tales. Are they on youtube? (not to derail the discussion, just curious)
